[1.6.11.0] SU4 Beta Survey - Performance (Xbox)

I was thinking the same with SU4 Beta but it’s now running great for me. I’ll do some investigating to see if I can identify which change made the difference for me.

I’m not flying complex a/c so maybe that’s part of it. I’m mainly using Taog’s 500C.

SU4 runs MUCH better. Definitely, but still it is far from good, barely acceptable.

This week I didn’t have much time to fly the sim with version 1.6.11. I think I only tested 3 or 4 flights with the A320 and the Vision Jet.

We know the former is much more resource-intensive. But I saw exactly the same issues in both. Stuttering, scenery disappearing and reappearing seconds later, the LOD ring, etc.

Much more noticeable with the A320 than with the Vision Jet, true, but still present in both. I’ll see what happens with something like the C172.

Xbox X MSFS2024 SU4 Beta 1.6.11.0 Performance Notes

Live Weather and Traffic, Rolling Cache 16GB

Have done several flights now in large airliners at large airports and performance is much improved HOWEVER CTDs are occurring more frequently in this build without warning. I have yet to pin down any common denominator as to what’s causing them.

–Stutters are still present randomly, especially on final and landing. This usually coincides with the blurring of textures and a poor rendering/LOD.

–As VRAM usage gets high PG buildings quickly turn into melted shapes and polygons

–Live traffic and default AI-ATC take up system resources quickly in this build, leading to stutters and memory leak

–Audio popping remains an issue, mainly when panning around with the camera and with multiple aircraft in the vicinity of yours

–The ATC comms window still does not maintain a stable flow of radio comms and sometimes jumps back to the very start of the chat and you have to scroll back down.

–The ATC comm window also gets stuck with limited options when you complete a flight at a gate. Bug Ex.) The jetbridge never comes to the aircraft and Option 4 under Ground Services says, “Request Passenger Boarding Stop” but when you click it nothing happens and ATC never responds. Their should be an option to reset ATC comms to the airport you have arrived at once you have blocked into a gate and completed a flight.

–AI ATC also unnecessarily still hands you off to a billion center controllers on simple flights that are less than two hours.

–AI Traffic remains a mess (I’m posting separately about that) but planes just sit on the runway and never take off or stay put once they land never allowing you to arrive or depart. Also flights never make it off the ground and taxi around in the world. The pic below shows a Delta flight taxiing to KDCA thru Arlington National Cemetery from KDTW!

–I’ve also noticed when you click on Live Traffic Info under a specific airport on the Free Flight screen, some real world flights show the correct departure info but lack the destination info….it is these flights that bug out at their respective departure airport because they lack all of the live info to behave correctly.

–Horses remain on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and POIs like the White House remain WAYYYY over exposed.

–Floating light orbs are much more noticeable in this build and are scattered throughout the world wherever there is illumination.

A statement of the obvious is the better paying missions are the longer ones, i.e. 5-6 hrs, which I fly using the speed up workaround. The first mission generally does not have any significant performance with frames per second issues. The 2nd mission begins to frame stutter and glitch usually during approach phase for landing but pretty much remains playable. A 3rd mission following the 2nd can become totally un-playable 3/4 of the way to approach to landing. The cockpit and instruments become un-discernible and un-usable, turning into gray blocks. You can continue this flight by changing the view from interior to exterior and fly the remainder of the flight from there….but that’s a crummy workaround. This does not happen to this degree all the time - but the stuttering (frame per second??) usually seems to occur from the second flight onwards. I’ve tried shutting down after the first mission completion and waiting a bit before restarting the sim. Sometimes that works but there is no guarantee.

Oh man you are brave

I always close the sim and restart between flights, MSFS has never worked well on the 2nd flight and onwards just a disaster and black screen guaranteed since 2020

Series X. This build is definitely the best so far for me. FPS massively up on SU3. I still get some stutters on approach into bigger airports.

The biggest problem I have so far is with live traffic. I’ve got AI traffic off, but there seems to be an issue with live aircraft being unable to leave airports. They sit on the runway forever, and will gradually pile up. ATC then starts glitching as there are so many aircraft going in circles on the runway and FPS starts to suffer.

Traffic aside, this is still a huge improvement over SU3 for me.

Just finished a really nice flight from South Korea to China in the 787. It was night so maybe it helped but zero stutters throughout, not a single one. LOD of runway in approach was perfect, no blur whatsoever.

It’s weird because you can land, park, shut down the engines, put in a new flight plan and do another flight with little to no issues. But as soon as you return to the free flight map and try to do another flight you are doomed. And this applies to both sims on Xbox. 5 flights in a single session is my record in 2020

I still unplug the console for 30 seconds as I’m sure it helps. Many times I haven’t and my second flight is trash

I unplug every night unless I’m doing an overnight long haul in which I case I do an unplug for a few minutes prior to it. Definitely helps

Having read a few comments about TV settings, it triggered a memory. I remember playing with TV HDMI settings in SU3. A particular change of HDMI setty coincided with superior graphics experience in a particular beta release not long before SU4 was released. And for me it was best ever graphics and performance since moving from msfs2020 to msfs2024. This setting was never changed in msfs2020 hence I never thought about it as being a factor in performance.

So today, I changed the HDMI settings again on LG 65” 4K tv, by disabling HDMI Ultra HD Deep Colour setting.
Immediately, I noticed three things:

  • improved quality of graphics and no 1 second pauses where graphics blurs and re renders
  • The pointer (circle with the dot) was picking (highlighting) buttons correctly
  • cursor movements were somewhat slower then before changing HDMI settings.

I landed at LDDU (small, medium size) with not a single stutter or pause. The controls were exceptionally responsive (As I would expect remembring some of the performance back in msfs2020)

If my changes of HDMI settings and observations coincided with anything that may have been improved or changed in the background in the last 48 hrs perhaps it’s just my imagination. I will complete few more flights but just as a quick check, I loaded LSZH and all the surrounding scenery loaded immediately and looked nice. I took a drone (external camera) flight towards Zurich City and just about all of the buildings were loaded pretty sharp looking. Prior to the HDMI setting change, buildings would look like pyramids and would take considerable time to load to their full quality. (up to 10 seconds)

Perhaps, there is something on the TV HDMI side that conflicts the Xbox and impacts the graphics. It would be good if anyone else tries this and notices any difference.

I have a 4K TV but I run the Xbox at 1440 as I do find that it gives better performance. In 4K mode, the Xbox runs noticeably hotter and therefore is working harder. So it makes sense that if you give it a bit of breathing room and make it work less hard, it will be able to perform better

So after suspecting that my 1440 settings was why I don’t get freezing on approaches, guess what? On approach into default Manila in the A359 and it was freezes the whole way in with city light blackouts a regular occurrence :frowning:

I read that by changing the name of the source from “xbox” to “console” the active TV of the additional options, for me it worked. It improves TV performance but does not affect the sim

That’s one thing I’ve never thought of changing, 4k to 1440p.

I had a high opinion of this version when I first flew it and shortly thereafter but the more I fly it the worse it gets I think. Today I went to Chicago for the first time with the C152 and, even when flying right near downtown, it never really looked as good as I think it should. Close PG/TIN can look really good with this version and, yes, you can see PG really far in the distance sometimes but often its trees with black triangles. The Sears tower looked like it was trying to call for Batman. and it stuttered on landing at both Chicago exec and Midway. and if you start from parking 24 at Meigs, you are floating in mid air. Hover technology has really advanced there… or maybe theres a lack of gravity in that spot? We know theres excess gravity in places that cause people to stumble and fall so it must have come from somewhere…right…

and I will try to never claim the C152’s ADF gauge is fixed ever again. fooled 82 times now.

Hello to everyone , i think there is a lot of work to do after this beta release… this is a new problem from yesterday…
