[1.6.31.0] SU4 Beta Survey - Performance (PC)

I have tested for some time now, with Intel Presentmon and found that version .31 is probably the best in regard to stutters so far. Here is a couple of screen-shots showing what’s going on. In the screen-shots you can see that the GPU takes a little “brake” while the CPU figure something out when changing views.

Notice the CPU-spikes and the “GPU pause”

Changing from cockpit to left wing-view in .31:

Changing from right wing-view to cockpit in .31:

Earlier - on the 27th of october:
Changing from right wing-view to cockpit in .30 or .29 - cant remember:
It looks like the GPU is spiking up the same as the CPU - causing severe stutters - both sounds and visuals. (But not so in .31)

I don’t see this happening elsewhere.

For me it works. You can change another version.:man_shrugging:

Okay, either I’m going crazy or something happened a couple of hours ago. A friend was trying out the SU4 beta for the first time and faced the exact same stuttering issues on a totally different setup. And then out of nowhere they disappeared for BOTH of us at about the exact same time and now the sim is smooth as glass :exclamation_question_mark:

Small pans around the cockpit still produce micro stutters that were not in earlier builds. Base framerate holds easily when looking one direction. I have 24 gb of vram.

First its complete non-sense. Second, why would we compromise on something that works great in MSFS ? Why an older title can work better than the newer title ?

Performance is good but on this build I had my first CTD for a long time im MSFS24 on a flight EHAM-LSZH 10 min after Dep. also the sounds were crackling and some stutters. restarted the flight and all is smooth again.

I have upgraded to Win11 26100.7309, which I think is a Preview Update (KB5070311) of 24H2.

I still have NVidia driver 560.94 with default settings - I won’t update it yet, to limit the number of changes etc.

Frame rate at EGLL 27R is about the same as 22H2 using the Fenix A320, about 50fps. However, my system (Gtx1080TI 11GB) is held back by a quad core Xeon and Fenix recommend 8 cores.

[The Ryzen 7 5800X is very good value; it should give me +42% single thread and +78% CPU Mark improvement @ 4.7 GHz. Yes I can get a bigger cache for twice the price, I’d rather spend the extra on more WinWing hardware!]

In the next few days I hope Windows Updates will find the full feature update(s).

Does it still stutter after you have looked around the first time, though? For me, only the initial look around does, which makes me think the off screen terrain caching never gets seeded with your initial location.

I think so. If I sit still for a minute, then pan, there would be stuttering. But if panning consistently, the stutters seem reduced, if that’s what you mean. Happens just as often on the ground as it does at cruise. I agree with your thoughts on off screen caching…. Think there’s something to that. Moved mine from high to ultra recently to try and mitigate, not sure there was a difference. I think some folks may disagree, but I’m ok with a stutter from a camera switch between the cockpit and a passenger seat. It’s the constant stutters during an occasional glance to the overhead panel that I’m seeing.

As I described earlier in this thread: VRAM is freed after a certain phase of inactivity for invisible objects. Open the FPS Window in developer mode and observe the VRAM usage, and you will see it. It can be discussed, if the objects should be released a few seconds sooner or later, but finally it will make no difference.

I tried lowering TLOD tonight to remove the stutters. Not only did it make the sim look poor, but the stutters/audio pops were still there, perhaps not as frequent but still there. I’m not sure what happened between now and the first SU4 but I’m starting to give up on this sim! I have a very high spec PC and should not be experiencing issues like this.

When I had stutters clearing the GPU shader cache eliminated them.

Done all that (several times).

Alright. Sorry to hear it doesn’t work for you.

As others have said, holding the view rotate key down for many 360 views allows the downloading and RC loading to settle to zero. Then the fps is very stable.

On a flight fast 360 pans are unlikely during takeoff and landing. Without the fps display I doubt I would notice a problem, after the Fenix has finished loading.

Had a nice flight in the Blacksquare Turbo Bonanza Pro from KSBP (Just Flight) > KHAF (MP Scenery) VFR via V27 airway (The TDS units are sure nice for managing airspace!)

The sim performed marvelously from start to finish.

The game becomes very laggy in scenes that have trees.

It seems to me that the SU4 beta is ready for takeoff, even though we still get stutters when rapidly panning the camera.

That wasn’t something the SU4 beta was meant to fix anyway.

For example - ground textures - still aren’t really integrated with terrain pre-caching. Setting terrain pre-caching to Ultra should solve that issue, but as I said, it’s not integrated yet because the devs first need to sort out the VRAM problem. Once they fix the VRAM issue, they’ll move on to improving terrain pre-cache and tying it all together. I’m hoping that lands in SU5.
