I cleared all Nvidia cache, Windows 11 DX cache and the in-game rolling cache and restarted my computer but nothing is bringing back my FPS. It stays at 35-38 when it was a solid 45fps before with 5.1. Now I have terrible visual artifacts when I turn my head because it’s fighting 45fps locked motion smoothing/reprojection. It looks like screen tearing even though my Nvidia app settings are set not to allow this. It looks like I’m looking out of a fish tank as I turn my head
Disabled all addons and used stock C172. No change in FPS. The only way to get FPS back is to drop a setting from DLSS balanced to performance but I still get artifacts as I move my head. The only way to eliminate artifacts is to disable motion smoothing. But I didn’t have any of these issues in 5.1
I tried various combinations and the best I can get is a buttery smooth 45fps with no artifacts using foviated rendering at 35%…other than what’s typical at 45fps like objects outside turning blurry when turning sharply on a taxiway or blurry planes coming in for a landing. Cannot use motion smoothing/reprojection without artifacts.
I don’t know if the visual artefacts you are seeing are the same as mine (described below), but I now have a terrible experience in VR. If this is not the same for you, please let me know and I will create a new topic.
The scenery when viewed from the pilot seat is showing delayed/distorted images, but only in certain areas. When I turn my head, the areas straight ahead or to the side of the nose go distorted, other areas are OK. When my head stops moving, the correct image is restored. If I look towards the wings, the scenery images are OK when I move my head. If I move outside the cockpit, or go to external views the scenery is perfectly alright as I turn my head, so this only seems to occurs in fixed regions close to or inside the plane. It also does not happen on the PC screen image when in VR mode, nor in 2D.
This has happened in all the aircraft I have tried, including PC-24, B787, Piper, and in all the airports I tried.
I have not had this effect before SU6.1. As it is, this will certainly stop me flying normally in the near future until it is fixed (if ever). When I have time, I may go back to the sim and try disabling foveated rendering etc, which may help to identify the problem.
I think the artifacts we’re experiencing are similar. When I look straight ahead and move my head up and down or lean side to side I see a wobbling image around the propeller area. The runway centerline will move up and down or left and right depending on which way I move my head. If I look off to my left in the C172 I see what appears to be the left side of an invisible square where the image distorts along that side as I move my head around and I see the similar thing when I look to the right (except it’s probably the right side of the square). In the Blacksquare bonanza professional I see a distortion in the image looking out the left window that looks the same shape as the small left window port about 6" from surface of the fuselage. When I stick my head out of the cockpit sometimes I could get the artifacts to stop so it appears the windscreen has some impact but it wasn’t consistent with different planes. I also get a small triangle of distortion in front of me wherever I look in the cockpit that looks like part of the corner of the eye masking cutout in my headset in Varjo Base. With previous versions to 5.1, I’d get artifacts when using foviated rendering. It worked best for me with 50% but had only a slight impact on fps. However it was usually enough to barely maintain a solid 45fps with openxr toolkit turbo mode activated. The ingame latency turbo setting has never worked for me in the past several iterations msfs 2024 nor does activating it directly in the Nvidia app. But with 5.1 I discovered I was able to eliminate artifacts and get a smooth 45 fps with dlss turned down to Balanced and activate openxr toolkit turbo. Then I could use motion smoothing 45 locked 90fps in my XR4 and have a good experience with a clear image. Whenever I turn openxr toolkit turbo off with Varjo motion smoothing activated I always got a stuttery 30 fps regardless of which version of msfs 2024 I used. Only by turning it on would it kick up to a smooth 45 fps. With version 6 I can’t get more than 38fps with the same settings I had in 5.1 and use Varjo motion smoothing without artifacts whether I use 30fps locked or 45fps locked in Varjo Base
OK I made significant progress just now. I set foviated rendering to 35%, set dlss rendering to balanced, enabled openxr toolkit turbo, enabled windows optimizations for windowed games, make sure msfs 2024 is set to best performance setting in windows 11, make sure it is recognized as a game in gamebar, and enabled HAGS. Several beta versions ago HAGS was creating all kinds of problems for me and someone recommended I turn it off. That fixed everything. But now enabling HAGS provides the tiniest extra boost allowing me to get a solid 45fps with Varjo motion smoothing on. I still get warbling out the front view when I move my head around but the rest of the visual anomalies have almost completely disappeared. I thought the front view warbling was caused by the propeller. But when I switched to a Blacksquare twin bonanza with no propeller directly in front of me it still happened. However the effect decreased somewhat when I stuck my head out of the cockpit window. Then I switched to the Visionjet and the anomaly completely disappeared. I notice the artifacts seem to appear in an outline of the plane about 6" from the surface of the fuselage. Beyond that, the anomalies are basically nonexistent.
So either you can have a butter smooth v synced 45fps where flying is enjoyable as long as you can tolerate blurry grass as you taxi by and dont mind blurry buildings when banking…Or you can have a motion smoothed 90fps that feels really smooth if you can tolerate through-the-window anomalies.
Yes, what you describe is the experience I’m having, including the triangle, though I’m using a Quest 2.
The only way I can improve mine is by switching the AMD FSR off, or using the new AMD FSR option “Native AA”. If I choose the quality option, the effects are very bad, but not so bad with the performance options.
In any case, the performance has suffered, dropping from 30fps previously in the PC-24 to 20fps with SU6. Whatever they’ve done to “upgrade” the VR, it has certainly resulted in a downgrade for me.
Doing some more trials, it all seems a bit strange.
The cause does seem to be that certain areas are slow responding to head movement. The areas do seem to be associated with the fuselage (not the wings, for example), and have particular shapes following the user position around.
Switching foveated rendering off, or reducing the level makes it worse, and even causes strange effects in the menu.
The problem is not just affecting the scenery. If I move my position backwards, it affects the gauges as well.
Finally, I wouldn’t think my system is that much different from many other users, so I find it strange that it is just the two of us who have so far reported the problem.
Did you notice the test was performed on a laptop? The hardware limitations of laptops can have a significant impact on the results, so it may not be a fair comparison.
If anyone is wondering whether the SU6 beta performs better than SU5.1, here’s the answer …
What I get from the video is a person testing his laptop on the current beta against his same laptop on 5.1 and also seeing a slowdown. I’d love to know what is causing this slowdown on some systems including my high end system so I could fix it.
For anyone worried my post is going to jeopardize the smoothness of the eventual release of beta 6 for people, I’m not interested in accomplishing that. My purpose is to report my findings, see if anyone is having similar issues, and collaborate on a solution, if anything is possible on our end. Or hope Asobo can release an update that eliminates bugs for everyone. After quite a few adjustments I am able to get a smooth 45fps with Varjo motion smoothing…which I’m excited about…but still unfortunately with annoying artifacts in windshields I’ve never had before this beta. Apparently this also affects some quest users.
Turning FSR off to stop visual glitches is interesting. That may help Asobo isolate a relationship. But we can’t stop using upscalers. We need them to get a clean image and good performance.
OK I tried switching DLSS off and using no AA at all. That stopped all visual glitches and it was a butter smooth 45fps. Downside is, of course, terrible aliasing. Then I tried TAA. Much better, no visual artifacts, butter smooth 45fps, but less clear than DLSS. Then I tried FSR AA. It was about as good as TAA but the visual artifacts started to appear although not nearly as strongly as DLSS. Then I tried the newest version of DLSS Balanced with the Swapper tool that’s one version of ahead of the one used in the beta and even with that, all the jarring visual artifacts came back again. Judging from what others are reporting in other categories, there is something in the latest upscalers from AMD and Nvidia that is not playing nicely with MSFS 2024 beta 1.8.5.0
Have you tried turning off Foveated Rendering? When I have this on I have terrible artifacts in my peripheral vision. What you have described about the grass is what I see in DLSS too with my quest 3. I use VD and in streaming tab I set sharpness at 20-30% and in game sharpening to 60%. Anymore in either and the artifacts only increase.
I also stopped using DLSS Swapper because of the same reasons a few patches back on 2D before I got the quest 3. I found the Nvidia App to be far move reliable now without producing issues.
That is exactly the same thing I am seeing. With the DLSS on, I am getting all kinds of extra movement when I turn my head. Its like things are lagging when you change your view. If I don’t move my head, the image is fine, but it I move, which I why I do VR in the first place, the DLSS lags.
