20 fps over new york with high end hardware

Hi,

i have a RTX3090 and a 11900K @5.0ghz and i only have 20 fps above new work on ultra settings in a cessna citation. running at 1440p and it’s a fresh install.
is this normal? even on high end settings it’s quite low.
i only have live traffic enabled and not AI traffic.

i don’t have any anti virus software installed and i am monitoring my cpu in hwmonitor and the temps are ok and it doesn’t clock down.

can you guys help me?

Could be something as simple as server load. The game is not traditional in terms of how it operates and relies heavilly on streaming and bandwidth. I would give it a few days to a week and see how things are then? Some users historically have reported decreased performance around the sim and world updates simply because so many people are downloading/playing at this time

Some areas are just tougher on the system than others. Photogrammetry areas (like New York), especially when combined with a complex airport (like JFK), can and will bring even the fastest systems to a crawl.

Simple things like the amount of ground traffic at JFK can also have a bit impact, especially when you’re not using ‘use generic plane models for AI’ on enabled.

Sometimes the performance is great other times its not and I kinda agree with @nimco82 Could be related to that one. One day its smooth then the next day or a certain hour of the day you wonder what the h.e.c.k’s going on.
Another thing I find that helps is restarting the sim if its on for hours.

This is not normal. It should be much better than that. I have an i9900k/2080ti running at 4K with 30fps. However, it depends on your settings.

First thing I would recommend is to check your render scaling under General. If it is too high you might be pumping too many pixels. With your hardware you can keep it at 100%.

I suggest you share the following:
1-Screenshots of your Graphics options
2-Enable developer under General, turn on the FPS counter via “Options->Display FPS” under the dev menu up top.

I think people need to change their mindset that all problems are related to their hardware. If there is anything I’ve learnt about MFS2020 over the past 6 months it’s that nothing appears to be consistent for users. This is not one piece of software that is self contained on your hard drive and that you can tweak easily. It’s a complex simulator using cutting edge technology that is in its infancy and there is plenty going on in the back-end that is completely out of our control from the streaming of data, to updates being pushed out without us knowing, to AI. I think we have to accept that performance could change at any given time

when sitting in the standard a320 at JFK i have about 25 fps and when taking off it goes down to 20. shouldn’t i get higher fps with my setup?

@fulatoro my settings are just the standard “Ultra” settings, i didn’t change anything after setting it to ultra. render resolution is at 100% and vsync is off of course.
i already enabled the fps counter and it says it’s limited by mainThread.

In that case, a few more things that might help.

1-Decrease the amount of Traffic
2-Decrease the terrain LOD a bit
3-If you have hyper threading enabled then disable it. If it is disabled enable it.

With your setup and running at 1440p it has to be better. I will share my settings once I get home. I an running mostly on high.

What do you get when you change the default setting to high end ?

I’m going to say it’s both perfectly normal and mildly horrible.

Normal in that many people even with the best of PC’s and playing many games very well will often come up with low frame rates here.

There are many solid and some odd tweaks, if you gamed back in Win98 times, it’s like that.

Tweaks include setting high priority in task manager, selecting optimal performance in nVidia settings, turning on or off game mode(still not quite sure) and for you especially enabling resizable BAR and above 4G encoding in your bios (they say it isnt supported but I think it helps) and a few other bios setting I’m not confident enough to suggest for anyone.

The following has helped my FPS.

1: Set Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate to LOW

2: Under Settings → General → Camera (scroll down) → Chase Camera Section → Disable the HUD

If you pop into third person camera, it will enable a HUD that for me costs 10 FPS. If you jump back into the cockpit, that HUD remains and the FPS hit remains.

3: Nvidia Optimal Settings gets me the highest FPS

4: Keep the LOD sliders at 100

Hope this helps. Cheers!

edit

Specs are:

3080 RTX
i9 10900
32GB RAM
SSD

The game doesn’t run that well. It’s just something you have to get used to. I am used to running things well over 100 FPS, so it’s been an adjustment for me.

Simple solution :

Best not run ultra settings

i noticed when i fly low or fast over photo scenery the FPS drop A LOT. even in munich when i fly down to the buildings fast my fps go down to about 20 fps. this is crazy. up in the air in rural areas fps range from 30 to 40.

@mblpenguin still in the 20s fps wise when flying lower.

@fulatoro on high it’s a lot better and i suppose i stay on high for now… but it’s a shame i invested this amount of money (i build this setup mainly for msfs) and can’t even play on ultra :frowning: and even on high fps go down to 25 when taking off in the standard a320 in JFK…

I think you can still improve. Did you check on the HT? Don’t despair. There are important optimizations coming up that should make you very happy about your hardware. In the meantime I agree it is a struggle but we are still far and beyond anything out there on the market.

I can barely get by with it and it’s pretty awesome and worth the struggle.

3060 RTX
i9 9900k
64GB 3600
Nvmes and SSDs
5760x1080

no i need HT for other application i am using on my system so that’s out of question to disable it.
i really hope they’ll further optimize it.

No it is not normal, I get between 50-55 fps flying around Manhattan with C172 at 3440x1440 Ultra with I9 10900 and RTX 2080Ti, your 3090 should perform better I think, have you try some older driver? I use 457.30, if you use Geforce Experience, try to disable it.

i9 - 9900kf (3.6/5.0 GHz)
RTX 2080ti
32 Go DDR4 3000
NVMe
4K

game setting : ultra for most, high for the rest

result on New York : Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 10 04 manhattan - YouTube

the problem is i am main thread limited, so it’s more of a cpu limitation than gpu. what’s your LOD sliders like? do you get fps drops when flying low near photgrammetry?

i get extreme fps drops when flying low and fast near photogrammetry.

what LOD settings do do you use? (LOD sliders)

Keep in mind that they’re showing results for the 172 and Icon A5, two of the absolute CPU-lightest planes in the game, while you’re in the perhaps CPU heaviest (top 3 at least!), so the results are not really comparable.

At best I get 110 fps in the C152, and at worst about 25-30 in the A320. System spec in profile (just click my username).
