2024 ActiveSky Weather Program Main Thread

Passive Mode all the way.

I wouldn’t say better. It’s very hard to say to be honest as I’m still trying to figure out the optimal settings for Active Sky but at the moment I’m flying more with live mode than passive. I think I’ve got it dialled in at this point

The only major issue I’ve seen is that incorrect snow depiction, and that was just happening without the aircraft having moved and on first load in.

oh ok I see is live better then passive? What does passive do? Sorry I’m dumb.

Passive Depiction Mode

Passive mode is used with live weather and allows MSFS’s internal live weather depiction to take full control of weather depiction in the simulator, while Active Sky FS provides Active Air Effects and all other non-depiction features (mapping, planning, voice features, conditions report, web companion app, etc.) This can provide better regional variation and cloud variations outside of Preset control, recommended for LIVE WEATHER VFR and casual flights where visuals and effects are more important than weather conditions accuracy.

Essentially, in Active mode ASFS controls weather appearance, Passive mode leaves MSFS to do that. However in both modes ASFS manipulates the wind, and other non-visible aspects of the weather.

Active mode works more like older simulators where weather is METAR based plus ASFS blending between two METAR’s. The downside is if you have a report of clouds in your area, but in the real world there are no clouds 10 miles away, you will see those clouds no matter where you fly at least until ASFS updates its weather depiction for your new location.

You won’t see distant weather fronts in Active mode, only Passive mode.

oh ok thank you so much! Do you recommend passive or active sky control?

Passive if you are happy with what MSFS is showing you, Active if not.

Have a look back up this thread for other ASFS recommendations. I think I posted images of my setting settings.

I mean I want thr most accurate

That’s really rolling a dice. Both can be, but sometimes aren’t.

I am also not happy with the snow depths depiction in europe. Hifi said they base their snow depiction on NOAA data, but is there much NOAA data for europe? I thought it is mostly for america. For my next flights in europe I will try the passive weather mode, maybe this displays the snow depths better.

windy.com is pretty accurate in its snow depth map depiction.

While provided by NOAA, it is GRIB model data which is global and based on many observational and forecast considerations world-wide. The only limitation is resolution, which is always improving.
