3080? 3090? ... or something else?

Morning everyone!

Considering buying a 3080 … (or 3090 but maybe throttling would be a problem with the CPU?)

This is my current setup … any advice? -Just for note, I mainly fly using VR .
Thanks in advance folks!

Unless you running 4K, 3080 is already overkill.

My 3080 is about 50-70% used running at 3440x1440 ultra.

Hmm thats interesting , the 1080 runs ‘ok’ … but as soon as I crank the complexity up its stuttering , and im mainly using VR now , so I guess thats another consideration.

Stuttering is caused by CPU, not GPU. And I think most of us has stuttering.

If you are considering a 3080 then I also consider a better CPU as well, especially for FS2020.
But then a motherboard, new PSU, SSD, etc; at the end just get a new system.

I had a 1080ti with 3900x, the sim was running fine, then upgraded to 3080.
There was some improvement in the average framerate, but not that spectacular.

In bush trips, I can get now 90-100 fps on ultra. In dense areas, cities around 40-50, plus the “normal” stuttering.

If you have money to burn then get a high-end PC (if CPU and GPU available at all) and hope that eventually, Asobo will optimize the performance.

Rx6800 is another Gpu you should consider.

3080 is the best buy (perf/price) by far.
An AMD doesn’t have DLSS and RT so we can’t consider it :frowning: (and a lot of driver’s problems)

My 3090 at 5120x1440 is at 100% ultra and with LOD levels at 500 runs upto 18gb vram :flushed::+1:

Let me guess, i9-10900K? OR something OC’d to 5Ghz at least.

I have 3080 and it runs well - but not perfect in those heavy dense areas (JFK, LAX, EGLL …) Still get about 30-40fps in the A320, but can drop to low 20s at times.

Agree with comments about upgrading CPU as well otherwise you will simply push problem there and be limited by main thread.

hmm thanks , I guess its knowing what CPU will go with the board? … the datasheets look a bit outdated on the MSI website.

5900x @5Ghz

intel socket on the board

No. They’re rubbish. I got one a few weeks ago and I’m sending it back.

I have just been through the same process as you are going through here, I had a GTX 1080 as well, it did a pretty good job to be honest.

I ended up with a completely new build in the end moving to a 3080 and a I9-10900K, no regrets though, it was well worth the while.

Like others have said above, I am don’t thing you will get the value out of the better GPU without addressing the CPU as well.

30-40FPS is perfect for a flight sim of this magnitude. Lots of flight simulators have lower frame rates. 20FPS is the minimum regulated by the FAA to use your experience to get into a flight school.

Yes agree…but overall not 100% perfect because when it does drop you then get the stutters… :unamused:

I went for 5800x, based on optimised single clock speed (i only use for MSFS and don’t need multi threading processing).

Why rubbish, you did not explain it ?
