3080TI 26% gpu usage 20fps at FL350 and elsewhere (NOT hardware related)

Just bought a brand new 3080-ti . The same issue was happening with my 1080-ti. Decided to fly 747 from FACT-HECA. 3:30 from arrival fps dropped down to 18fps. My cpu usage is sitting at 30% while my gpu usage is sitting at 26%. If my cpu usage is still so low then why is the sim not allowing my cpu to instruct the gpu to render more fps. Nothing is getting used. Empty community folder. Nothing in it. Brand new hardware. Issue always on long haul flights and sometimes even in a c172 cold and dark at a random airport. I even had multiplayer off and ai traffic off. There is a big issue. Refuse to fly with a 3080-ti at 18fps. I did the maths with 30%cpu and 26%gpu if the sim actually worked I should be getting 80fps. at 3.8 times more fps. I announce bugs in your live twitch events and just get penalized by your stupid moderators. Is anyone going to do anything for this simulator or are you going to just keep worrying about xbox where those players don’t even know or fly with atc? Can someone actually work for once? In the beginning of this sim you said this sim was designed for professional flight sim pilots who use atc and know everything there is to know about planes, But instead you ignore the pc community and worry about xbox. No-one can fly properly on xbox. I had to ditch my vr headset because the sim is not vr ready. At 50fps my cockpit is bouncing non stop in a HP g2. My quest 2 never worked with the sim. Just kept disconnecting. So goodbye vr. But at least fix the 2d. 18fps is not acceptable with a graphics card like this. I really believed in this sim, I hope I still can, I really don’t like having to present myself to this thread in this manor but its come to a point where no-one does anything about my issues. I have reported the same stuff that just gets left in the dark. Enough is enough. Its time you guys take action and prioritize on the important stuff.

Edit: Just finished my flight gpu usage dropped down to 19% : fps=17
Specs:
3080-ti
i7 7700k 4.5ghz 4 cores hyperthreaded to 8.
16gb ram 3200mhz
fast ssd 600gb crucial.
asus strix motherboard.
(Nothings overclocked)
(GPU Temp sitting at 45C. CPU hotspot sitting at 59C

I have submitted to zendesk and waited 3 months for a reply only from a bot.
I was also a alpha tester.

You can be CPU limited even through the entire CPU isn’t busy, and you likely are.

Go to the sim settings and turn on developer options, then go to the new dev toolbar and the top and turn on the FPS counter. It will specify what is limiting you – you’ll almost certainly see “Limited by MainThread” which means you are CPU limited.

@Aeluwas thanks I will give it a try

Was also gonna say have you actually looked at the individual cpu cores when in use?

Each core is individually getting used at 36%

Out of interest what is your power plan set to on windows and in NVidia control panel?

These are my suggestions (for VR specifically but probably work in general also):

  • Turn off Windows Game Mode
  • Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
  • Set Graphics performance preference to Desktop app
  • Make sure you have appropriate driver version – I use latest one: 471.96
  • Install OpenXR Developer Tools through Windows Store, enable “latest preview OpenXR runtime” in its settings, set Custom Render Scale to 70% (tweak it later).
  • Set in game VR graphics settings to low to start with (you can raise them later once you have good FPS)
  • Set offscreen terrain caching to Ultra (this is v important, their new caching system is terrible, and anything other than Ultra results in lags every single time I move my head)

These made massive difference for me (on 3080Ti with G2 Reverb). I get 45fps constant with 100% in game render scale and High clouds setting (even in the middle of full cloud coverage, while close to ground).

Also you can find many guides on this stuff if you google / search the forums.

I am limited by main thread. Thanks for that. I guess I need a better cpu

Probably yeah. 7700K + 3080 Ti is a very uneven pairing.
The most CPU heavy options to try reducing are the LOD sliders (which have a huge impact), and to some degree the glass cockpit refresh rate.

I see a lot of clouds there, and they look like they are set to Ultra. Certainly you should experiment with setting clear skies in weather settings, as cloud rendering is one of THE most expensive parts of the frame. And it might even be somewhat CPU limited (I haven’t looked into the tech they use).

Actually it shows you are limited by “manipulators” thread? Googling does NOT reveal what manipulators means in this context, does anyone know? Pretty hard to even guess at a solution when its not clear what it means. A few people are mentioning something about streaming data, and cache size. Perhaps try disabling all online connection to test that? Really just guessing though…

So I have been experimenting and I realized that by putting my graphics options preset down to low end my frames went to 45fps. I put my settings back to ultra like it was before. I then restarted my sim and I then teleported back to the exact position at the exact same altitude on the same route and my frames at the same settings were at 55fps. So clearly I’m assuming this is more a performance degradation rather than a cpu to gpu inbalance?

Random FPS drops with new MSFS update - "Red" manipulator - Page 2 - Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) - The AVSIM Community It looks as though “manipulators” is related to the online stuff. other people with the “manipulators” problem turn “online” off and it seems to work. People have had various fixes. Check your internet connection (speeds up and down). Are you on Wifi?

Yeah that correlates with what other people are saying regarding this specific manipulator thread problem. One reason it might be fine now is that it has downloaded and cached the data for that area now, so when you go there again its fine. Once you go to enough other places it will push this one out of the cache and you will get bad fps again when you return.
If this is true you could reproduce it just by clearing your cache (or setting the size to zero).

first thing you should do is check firewall pass through but then enable all cores (without checking I assume you have 6 or 8) in bios and I suggest checking you have virtualisation disabled while you are there. Also disable all startup items as there will be nothing that you absolutely need, even the AV or Windows security boxes are only for notifications.

This is all from last February and is literally worthless information

So? it’s still the same problem. That’s like saying you want to learn something new but refuse to watch a Youtube tutorial that’s 1 year old.

Same thing here, there’s nothing wrong with the caches just don’t put them on a slow HDD. Best is a small 4GB ram drive or NMve as they particularly help with pop-in objects and scenery.

Why would you even have it on your system if it causes stutters? Just get rid!

SU5 changed the whole way your ram and vram handles data, nothing that worked before is guaranteed except the less bumf installed the better the sim will run.
