5800X3D with a 3080/3080Ti

Looking at upgrading my CPU and GPU but weary about the timing with new gens coming out in the next 6-12 months.

Current Rig:

Ryzen 7 3700X
RTX2070 Super
32GB Ram CL16
1440p

Thinking about going with a 3080 10/12GB or a 3080Ti. Anybody made a similar upgrade lately and are you happy with the performance increase? Thank you all in advance!

Interesting. I have a similiar configuration. 3900x + 2060super.
Could be an interesting thread, because i’m thinking about similiar change.

If your monitor is 1440p then the 3070 or 3060ti might be better value for money. The 3080 and above are for 4K. They’re all good for VR though, which I don’t know if you’re wanting as an option. The 3080ti and 3090 are not great value for money when it comes to sim performance. A few extra FPS for a lot more money.

Bare in mind that the 4000 series GPU’s will be very difficult to get hold and very expensive. I suspect even at RRP they’ll be a lot higher than the 3000 series currently are.

That’s what I’m thinking as well regarding the 4000 series. Going to be pricey and tough to get a hold of until probably second half of next year anyways. The 5800x3d seems like it’ll be sufficient for msfs2020 for a while to come just want to pair it with the right GPU

If I were in your shoes, I would upgrade the CPU to the 5800X3D as they both use the AM4 socket so you don’t need to upgrade your motherboard. Anything next gen from AMD after Ryzen 9 will be on the AM5 so you will require a new motherboard.

Right now that CPU is the best performer for MSFS.

As for your GPU, that I would wait for 40 series. Either get a 40 series (if you can when they come out) or grab a 3090 as everyone else jumps to 40.

Just my thoughts.

Think there will be significant improvement upgrading the CPU and sticking with a 2070super at 1440p?

Are you Mainthread limited right now if you turn on Dev Mode? If so, then yes you would eliminate some of that bottle neck, but you’re also setting yourself up for a good GPU upgrade in the not so distant future.

I have a 3090, and MSFS can’t fully utilize it as is, so will the 40 series cards be amazing? of course they will, will they be anymore utilized than the 30’s in MSFS? probably not right away until more is done with DX12, DLSS, etc…

1440p tends to be gpu intensive. May not be the case for the flagship 30series cards but you’ll benefit from a gpu upgrade.
On 1440p with a 10700k and 2060super I am always gpu bound.

Are you running a 5800x3d as well?

No, I am running a 5950X.

That CPU just came out less than a month ago.

I sold my 5950x and got a 5800x3d for VR on MSFS with a 3090. while I miss the 5950x synthetic benchmark results which is something I constantly liked to measure and improve, the behavior of the simulator, specially in VR, is positively affected in a very noticeable way. if MSFS, DCS, X-Plane are the main purpose of your system and you look for the most dramatic upgrade in “fluidity” without having to upgrade your motherboard and ram, this is the upgrade to buy…

What MoBo and ram are you running?

I built a system recently on an X570 board, using 3600 ram (4 x 8GB) with the 5800X3D and a 10GB 3080.

The upgrade exceeded expectations.

Old system was a 5600X, 3200 ram (2 x 16GB) on an X570 board.

The 4000 series might not be as difficult to get hold of as you might imagine. Inflation, collapse of mining, energy costs, recession will all likely result in much lower sales for Nvidia and AMD this winter.

What brand Mobo and Ram? I ask because there are so many with varying features and capabilities.

Hi

Does your 5800x3d and 3080 works well in vr? What are your settings and fps?

I am sure its perfect for 4k and below.
