I’ve not flown the 787-10 or 787-8 much but over the past few days have done a couple of flights. Both times the aircraft has landed automatically (which is fine) but I want to hand fly the aircraft the last few thousand feet. How do I do this? Every time I click the AP nothing happens, it doesn’t disengage. Is there something else I need to do?

Hi, what controller(s) and platform are you using?
There is a specific “Autopilot Disconnect” control binding that I use, mapped to a button on my joystick.
In the cockpit there should be a red button on the yoke with the same function.
I’m on the Xbox Series X using the T-Flight Hotas One/throttle combo.
Maybe I need to do this, too. But isn’t it the same as physically clicking the AP button to disengage it? My issue is, when I click it, nothing happens, it stays illuminated. This happens in both the 787-10 FS default and 787-800 from Bravo Airspace.
If you have button to assign to your HOTAS, you might try assigning toggle autopilot master. I have this assigned to my yoke and it works to both engage and disengage any Boeing A/P in MSFS 2020.
I’ll give that a try and report back.
I set a button to toggle AP on/off and this didn’t work either. Back to square one it seems.
Um, not the right binding: Try TOGGLE AUTOPILOT MASTER
No I didn’t think so. Airliners, and many other planes have a dedicated autopilot disconnect on the yoke, so the pilot doesn’t need to remove hands from the yoke and throttle when on final approach, for example.
On Airbus, you need to click AP Disconnect twice, once to turn off AP and another to silence the disconnect alarm.
I don’t think it is SOP to use the AP disengage bar on the MCP. I always understood that to be a quasi-permanent full disconnect of the system, and you can’t turn AP back on with the normal AP button. I’m guessing you only use that in very specific circumstances.
So use the disconnect on the yoke.
On the 787 disconnecting the Autothrottle is a separate action from disconecting the A/P. You may already be doing this but after rereading your OP it occurred to me that this is a separate key bind. I have a button on my throttle lever bound to disconnect A/T, perhaps you have this too? When hand flying the Dreamliner on approach, it helps to leave the A/T engaged, and only disengaging it just before touchdown (or leaving it for the automation to do that). Nice to have options!
I fly the 787 a lot and notice I do have to hit the master AP disengage. I’ll check my bindings. Like to straighten this out too as I just put in some simple binding when I got 2024. I have a simple Thrustmaster too.
BTW, the 787 is easy to fly by hand. Very forgiving on landings.
Thanks, this now works as suggested.
