8, 10, or 12-bit depth resolution?

I’m on X Box Series X and I use a TV as a monitor. The X Box gives options not only for 1080, 1440, or 4k but also for 8 bit, 10 bit, or 12 bit. It doesn’t seem to matter if HDR is allowed or not (which confuses me).

My question is: What bit depth does FS 2024 render in? If I choose 12 bit, will FS24 render in 12 bit or will it still be 8 bit?

Until a video pro comes along to explain bit depth so we all can understand it

My basic understanding of bit depth is that it’s about how many colours a pixel can reproduce. 8 bit being 256, 10bit being the most common currently.

I’m fairly certain msfs is coded for 10bit.
Set your box to match your Monitor/TV capabilites. No it won’t upscale to 12 and if you hardware is 8bit, that’s all it will do.

Hope that helps😉

Thanks for trying to help. I ended up asking AI and it told me that the X Box can artificially expand an 8 bit signal into a 10 or 12 bit whether or not you choose HDR or Dolby Vision. If you choose to turn HDR on in game and have everything else set up correctly then the game will be in 10 bit as it should be to actually be HDR10. I now understand better what Windows pseudo HDR mode is all about.

There’s a video on YouTube that explains these settings well on Xbox X:

Regarding the quality used in FS2024, you’d have to ask the developers. I read somewhere (but I can’t remember where) that it was indeed 10-bit (or 30-bit RGB - one billion colors).

You need to adjust the settings according to the capabilities of your TV/monitor. If it’s limited to 8 bits, it won’t be able to do more. If it’s 12 bits and FS2024 is “only” encoded in 10 bits, it won’t make any difference; you won’t get any more colors.

Thanks for that. I’ve seen that guys videos before and he’s very helpful.

I’ve been running 1080 at 60Hz 8 bit to my inexpensive TV and it looks quite good. I think I need to remember that the grass is not always greener.
