9800X3D versus 9950X3D for MSFS 2024

This is my cockpit. When running all the companion apps along with the sim and other apps to driver the instruments and displays, I noticed an improvement when upgrading from the 7800x3d to the 7950x3d in my case. Can’t speak on the newer gen cpus as of now I have the 9800x3d. Again this was my experience with the last gen.

Off topic question here. How well is AIG running for you in 24?

Yeah, fine most of the time but it’s not fully compatible. Still has issues with stuff landing and taking off sadly

Yeah that is what I hope for asobe to work on. Immersion wise it’s so much better when working correctly

Are you capped at 60fps with frame generation turned on or off? Keep in mind my testing was with FG turned off so that the the 1% and 0.1% lows have meaning alongside an avg fps number. With frame gen on, how I normally sim, I am also getting 60+ fps.

What GPU are you on? With a 4090 the sim is absolutely CPU bound in 4k in anything other than default GA aircraft in standard scenery. With the Fenix, I have never seen anything other than ‘mainthread limited’ (not GPU) in the MSFS built-in FPS counter.

You seem very sure that the CPU makes no difference. How do explain the 23% difference I saw in my system? I just did a CPU swap in the exact same system with the same software in the exact same software scenario. I am not giving all the credit to the 9950x3d. Process lasso in conjuction with the dual CCD helps I think.

If you read the post you would understand. And if your worried about bandwidth, get better internet.

Hi, why CCD0? CCD1 are ones with vcache?

Just FYI this evening I loaded into iniBuilds LAX Enhanced with AIG traffic at 100%. Everything is turned up as far as it will go (and beyond where possible) and with DLSS 4 Profile K and Frame Gen on in 4K my system is happily sat at 60fps (capped) with both the CPU & GPU sat at about 50% ish utilisation. VRAM usage was 20GB and RAM was at 39GB but I couldn’t ask for any more.

The relevant numbers can be seen in the top left of the shot. I think it’s fair to say the 9800x3D is more than a match for anything FS can throw at it.

I’ve used this in the past and didn’t find it helped. Just ended up causing stability problems with win10/11. To me its just snake oil, and I’m better off letting windows manage the CPU and also the swapfile. If you think you’re getting a significant benefit using it, that’s great imho.

BTW, I’m planning on upgrading my QPro headset to a higher res micro oled headset later this year, once I see some honest independent user reviews, not just YouTubers with affiliate links hype. Currently it looks like it’s going to be either a BSB2e with audio and halo strap or a Pimax Dream Air.

Also planning on upgrading my current PC (i913900k/rtx4090/32Gb 6400ram) to a new build with 9950x3D/rtx5090/64Gb 6400ram next month. So, 2025 is looking to be an expensive ride, lol!

And in VR for both FS24/20?, with WMR-SteamVR etc., would deserve the swap to the 9950X3D from the 9800X3D (with an RTX 4090)?, and with the same 23% increase of fps and lows?, if people says that at 4k they are CPU mainthread limited, in VR then…

@FlyingAce86 What is it your opinion for VR?

Just built a new PC that provides 72Hz/FPS (Quest 3 VR) in most places with MSFS2024 medium settings (and just about ALL places with MSFS2020):
AMD 9800X3D (Mild 10% overclock)
Corsair Titan 360 CPU cooler
Gigabyte x870 motherboard
Corsair Vengeance RGB 64GB RAM DDR5-6000 CL30
Corsair MP700 with Heatsink 2TB PCI 5.0 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD <<======

Current GPU = RTX5080 but started with 3080ti which gave 50-60FPS in most places

Temps on the MP700 are about 44 C when MSFS is running MSFS flight
CPU temp - 58C
GPU temp - 52C

My goal was to run MSFS and DCS at 72HZ/FPS without ASW/SSW motion reprojection for VR or above 60 FPS for three monitor use. This $3000 USD system really is amazing. Yes, wish I could run Ultra settings but I really prefer the smooth visuals when looking sideways for VFR or especially with helicopters in VR mode.

I haven’t done the direct comparison in VR, but I use the Varjo Aero at those resolutions I think the sim is completely GPU bound if using TAA at full PPD.

I am hesitating between 9800X3D and 9950X3D too. My graphic card is RTX5090, and my intel 13900K is struggling when used with Pimax Super at high quality setting. I don’t care the price difference between 9800X3D and 9950X3D, and I just want the highest possible performance between the two running MSFS 2024 in VR mode. Please let this thread go on and share your experience with the two most powerful consumer graphic cards. Thanks!

DottyBoat I just built a RTX 5090 / 9950x3d rig and all I can say is WOW!

You won’t regret it.

The 9950X3D if you disable the non X3D CCD must be better a minimum because becomes a binned 9800X3D with higher frequencies, and the price difference it isn´t too much nowadays, I would go for the 9950X3D and if you need all the cores because you have many other tasks at the same than MSFS, enable it in BIOS, and then 9950X3D will be better anyway in performance than the 9800X3D.

With the AMD software changes you do not need to disable the non x3d CCD.

Sounds great. Have you used it in VR mode?

Not needed though you can achieve higher frequencies, lower consume sure, and a minimal better performance if you don´t use too much tasks. The AMD Turbo Gaming mode or whatever is called, in BIOS I think that it disables the no X3D CCD and more aggressive disabling even hyper-threading.

I would be super interested in seeing how the 9800X3D and 9950X3D compare as far as building projects in the 2020 and 2024 SDKs. Some large projects take a few minutes to do a “build all” and I’m curious if the SDK takes advantage of the extra cores, it would save a lot of time when iterating changes.
