A confirmed cynic's first flight after SU5

While I have been waiting for my installation to update I have been fairly active on these forums expressing my disappointment at the experiences many have been encountering. I have also voiced my exasperation at the entire updating process and the frustrations I have suffered throughout. Finally, everything was updated, my community folder was empty and I decided to dive into the plain vanilla game and take a flight in the C172 with glass cockpit.

The flight was a short one, from London Gatwick (EGKK) to Shoreham (EGKA) IFR. Real world traffic was turned off as was real world weather. No fps meters were being used as I preferred to rely on my visual response to the graphics.

Setting up the flight on the world map it seems I’m still waiting for the ability to minimise the departure and arrival boxes so they don’t obscure the route. I began cold and dark and taxied out to the runway using in game ATC. My initial response was that the display was brighter than before and the colour pallet seemed slightly different too. This was confirmed as the flight progressed. I may need to adjust the gamma to take account of this in future.

It looked like all my settings had been saved from before. Taking off I found a couple of oddities with the ATC. On lining up the plane seemed to request another pushback all on its own or perhaps I had inadvertently pressed a button. On climb out tower handed me off to departure who contacted me without any contact from myself.

I was flying with scattered clouds and I found them OK, certainly nothing to complain about. Ground textures too were OK although I wasn’t flying high enough to make any comment of pop ins. What I did notice however was that the ground elevations were easier to appreciate. The approach into Shoreham is over the South Downs and the rolling hills were far more noticeable.

Panel textures seemed more crisp and the hotspots appeared to be altered so that adjusting knobs was more precise. During the flight the fps seemed to produce a silky smooth experience although as I neared Shoreham on approach I did experience some minor stuttering. The IFR approach into Shoreham is an RNAV which worked fine although to be honest this was always an airport where the glidepath was captured correctly.

Touchdown and the rollout was where the biggest issue occurred. As I ran to the end of the runway I switched to chase camera mode in order to assist with seeing the taxiway. As I did this the game froze entirely for maybe 10 seconds. Fortunately it didn’t CTD and I was able to taxi to parking with no further issues. Overall the flight took just over 16 minutes.

I am one of the unfortunate users who has been experiencing frequent CTDs since around January after an initial period from release where everything was fine and stable. My rig is based around a Ryzen 5 3600XT and RX 5700XT with 32gb RAM running mainly with everything set at HIGH at 1080p. My dream was that this update would solve my issues. Well, the jury’s out on that one at the moment. A 16 minute flight isn’t enough to convince me things are back to normal, especially with the freeze at the end, but at least it doesn’t appear to be any worse at this stage.

I felt I needed to post the results of this first flight as I had been particularly scathing of the developers in the past. I tried to write an objective account and hope that the results hint at a new dawn on the horizon. Next I will try a longer flight then slowly begin to incorporate some of the mods I have been using…Navigraph, liveries, Garmin mods etc. Maybe I will add to this thread as I progress.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, please add to your experiences as some of us have decided to keep well away from the SU5 update until things calm down a bit.

I am very concerned though… Asobo cutting down on the sim’s biggest USP (visuals) - the one thing it could truly claim was better than its rival sims - just seems like suicide to me.

To be honest you don’t notice it down low nor would I imagine up in the flight levels. It’s only really going to be a huge issue if you are roof skimming in a cityscape. My flight was at a maximum of 2,200 ft over a predominantly rural landscape and although I was looking out for it I saw no popping in. Bear in mind I was also only flying at HIGH and the apparent fps might suggest I could try ULTRA which would offset any texture degradation present. Of course it’s still streets ahead of XP11 as far as scenery is concerned.

Thanks for the report. We appear to have very similar systems. I too have the Radeon RX 5700 XT but my CPU is a Ryzen 7 3700X, 32 G RAM but running vid at 2560x1440 (monitor native). “High end” defaults for FS settings. I have not had any CTD issues since the beta over a year ago. The only killer I experience is rarely having Microsoft simply refusing to boot the program, saying it is not installed. I still get fairly constant micro-stutters though, at low altitudes. They are very evenly spaced at about 300 ms. The debug tools shows all good, 45+ FPS, with typical 100% GPU and 20% CPU utilization that I was also seeing with SU4. The overall frame-rate is improved, and longer random stutters are far fewer now.

I am VERY happy with the update. I was hoping for more CPU utilization, but they put a ton of great new unexpected (by me anyway) content in. Pontoons on the Shock Ultra are terrific. I can land in a washtub now :upside_down_face:

EDIT- MY BAD The micro-stutter was a result of my completely missing that I somehow had V-Sync turned back on in the graphics setting. Running smooth now overall, with just occasional stutters.

It’s all a lottery really isn’t it? No apparent rhyme or reason as to whether something works or not.

Well unfortunately the game is now literally unplayable for me. I have tried the exact same flight (EGKK/EGKA IFR) five times today in the same plane (C172 G1000), exact same conditions and the game has frozen on me roughly 5 minutes into the flight. The freeze does not recover even after 5 minutes of waiting and I have to use the task manager to close the program. The sound continues in all cases however is not responsive to cutting power etc. I have confirmed it isn’t due to the game automatically entering live pause. This is 100% reproducible for me.

I’ve reported to Zendesk but to be honest I’ve had enough now. I’m out.

Let me try it, did you take the world map IFR Low route, or anything added (SID, STAR?)

What weather did you have set and what traffic?

Also which server are you on?

Low IFR route as calculated by world map. No AI traffic, no live weather RNAV 20 approach. I’m assuming I’m on Western Europe server (UK)

OK I’m on it, so far so good. ATC still mad, routed via BITLI. Just got an AZURE warning about ATC voices not available but no crash yet. I will up date shortly
I am on the Automatic (North Europe) server.
5 miles out and cleared to land.

OK so I arrived, landed parked up next to the WACO. I know it doesn’t help you much but apart from the Azure server warning, I couldn’t see any issues. I used the AP the route was wacky and the profile mad but ATC still needs some work. I quite like it because in real life ATC can be a bit crazy. I have no addons except for the Honeycomb Bravo AFCBridge installed apart from my 2 Carenado’s hence the Waco being at Shoreham. Haven’t tried them yet.
Let me know if I can try anything else to help.

It’s maddening isn’t it? The first flight yesterday was fine except for the 10 second freeze at the end. Today I can’t do anything. I’ll maybe try a different part of the world but to be honest I don’t know if I can be bothered.

By the way the route via BITLI is correct. That is the published route into the RNAV 20 approach.
Thanks for trying to help.

No worries, I feel your pain. If I hear of anything I will post again. Hope you get it sorted soon, I have no doubt you will really enjoy it again once its working. The performance for me took me from 20 to 33 FPS, the textures look way better (crashpad) but for me the model seems bang on now, trimming feels like the real thing. I fly a C172 out of Popham and it feels bang on to me.
Good luck

Yes, now that I’ve gotten MSFS running properly with no CTDS for 2 days now, I must admit it’s much better as far as frame rates, in fact I had to limit my frame rates because it was running close to 90C most of the time. Image quality looks the same to my 70 yr. old eyes (LOL), I can’t complain.
When this thing is running properly it’s pretty nice.
Just need to figure out how to get the external view camera joystick on my Xbox controller to go right when pointed right, it’s backwards, the reverse is in there somewhere.
