A question for players who record their flights

Hi all,

I was trying to record a flight on MSFS through the Nvidia record option (alt+z i beleive) and as soon as the video was completed i noticed there was noticebale fps drops

My pc is 3090ti 5800x3d

I was running the sim on 4k ultra

What do you think is the best way to record flights on msfs to ensure a smooth capture?

I use OBS Studio. Love it and don’t notice a performance drop.

I use the Nvidia recording tool and have no troubles with it; Ryzen 5800X3D w/ RTX 2070S at 3440x1440 HDR. Note you may wish to configure the frame rate, resolution limit, and bitrate.

I use the Nvidia Geforce recording feature. Its probably the easiest way of doing it.If you want to record entire flights in 4K you’ll get some truly huge files though.

What frame rate do you use?

My tv has a frame rate limit of 60 fps

You think capping the recording at 30 fps makes sense?

Thanks a lot

Actually i am more focused on recording key moments such as takeoff landings etc

If you’re interested in editing and making movies with your footage then I totally recommend DaVinci Resolve. I think its what most people use. The base version is free and very capable. Most importantly its also relatively intuitive and easy to use once you’ve watched one or two Youtube tutorials.

Its great fun making movies with your flight sim footage. Brings a whole other dimension to your enjoyment of the sim.

Perfect

I will have a look. Thanks for the recommendation. The only video editing software on my list with the adobe package with the two video editing software

I’ll defintely take a look at this

At the moment all i do is take screenshots

I use 60fps, since my real rates are usually between 30 and 50 (depending on phase of flight and location, plane, weather, etc).

I record my videos with the XBox Gamebar and I see no noticable performance impact.

If anyone wants to try it, make sure you set the recording quality to high and 60 fps for the best video quality. Windows Control Panel → Gaming → Captures

Thanks

Will give it a try

It’s a powerhouse program and it’s FREE. OBS Studio for the win.

OBS gives you the choice of capturing with either cpu (x264) or gpu (NVENC,H.264) so whichever suits your system best. Important is to capture to a fast drive (preferably not the same one as your packages are on), I use my NVMe PCIe-4 C: drive, packages are on D. 4k 60fps no problem

Just to let you’'all know, the Nvidia BACKGROUND APP FPS option if used this will impact some recording software such as Sky Dolly.

Use Sky Dolly to capture the flight data and then replay the portions you want and record them with any of the recording methods explained before. I think that´s better and allows you to record the same landing from multiple angles for instance.

Thanks

At the moment I’ve got the flight recorder v5 but I’ll give sky dolly a look as well

I heard good things about it, but the UI had an impossibly small font on my 4K monitor and I couldn’t find a way to make it more readable.

I just opened it on my 4" monitor and it looks fine. Software…it’s all black magic! There might be a hidden “font sizer” in there somewhere. I usually have OBS open on a second (23" 1080P) monitor and capture my 4k screen.

In my search for optimum performance I mess around with different resolutions a lot so I can empathise with Alpine. However it is simple enough to temporarily change to a lower desktop resolution while you make your changes and then switch back, sooner or later you will know exactly where everything is and won’t need to. It is also possible to assign hotkeys that you never actually need to use the UI once they’re set up.
