Before anyone starts recommending VDXR I cannot run it, I cannot spend the money to upgrade my mesh routers at the moment, and it is a laggy stutter blurry mess when I use it with my existing equipment. Thanks
The past few weeks have been glorious. Everything running on all cylinders until tonight… I went to go on a flight and was greeted with a “SteamVR updated” message. As soon as I Alt Tab into VR the game does what it should, but noo SteamVR decides to sit at the lobby with the “loading” microsoft flight simulator screen. Never progresses past that. Just sits there while my computer has gone on and started the sim and is sitting in the main menu with the dual view for VR. Utter frustration.
I guess this is a vent / frustration post. Any help would be appreciated.
Ok after taking some time to cool my head ugh. I started troubleshooting a bit deeper and thought of what else may be affecting the change with SteamVR. They apparently did something with their implementation of OpenXR, so I started with the first thing that popped into my mind. I disabled OpenXR Toolkit to see if that would allow MSFS to go into VR, and well… That was the culprit. As soon as I re-enabled it, it would give me the same problem. Disable it, and things would run fine. I was hoping I would have had more time with the bliss that OpenXR Toolkit provided, and the buttery smooth gameplay.
After realizing that was the issue I started messing with some settings inside the game to try to recapture some of the loss of frame rate I experienced and I came to a reasonable compromise. Pretty much everything is on low as it was, but I turned TAA down to 90% in the resolution and that took about 80% of the stuttering back out when flying at my normal group of airports. I have yet to try it at a busier airport, will do so tomorrow night at KDEN.
For now, that will be my solution. I am hoping for a decent Christmas bonus this year, so we will see if I am able to upgrade my graphics card AND Mesh system.
For a bit of information, I am running the game on an older rig. AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, 16 gigs of memory (another 16 coming from my father who just upgraded his sim rig) An RTX3060, Velocity one Yoke system, and for my non yoke planes a logitec X52 flight stick and throttle. Rudder pedals are on my list if the bonus is good enough.
Hope this helps anyone else that may be facing similar issues.
ohh yea. The 4 I am getting from my father are a matched set, manufactured on the same date as well. Should be good to go. The ones that are in my current machine are going into a computer I am setting up for my wife.
I noticed this issue with the beta branch of SteamVR a couple of days ago, so I rolled back to the release version. Now that the beta has been released, I see the same problem. I’m grateful that you took the time to post, now I don’t have to go troubleshooting myself.
I’m sure either SteamVR or the OpenXR Toolkit will be fixed in time. Though I suspect we’ll have to wait a bit for a fix, because holidays.
edit: Uh. Maybe not.
OpenXR Toolkit: Inactive Reason: Functional-enough and complete. Feature and compatibility quickly degrades over time and requires too much work to maintain. OpenXR Toolkit demonstrated how easily every game developer can deliver a better experience by implementing a few simple features. It is now time for game developers to make these efforts themselves.
Well, it was nice while it lasted. If anyone is aware of an active and maintained fork, please let me know.
Hopefully someone will fork the project and get it up and running again. I got things running relatively smooth without the toolkit, but its not what it was. I think I am going to grab a 4080 here next week (decent Christmas bonus) and see if I can eek out a bit more performance than my 3060 is providing lol.
you have no idea how happy you just made me lol. I did not even think that it could also be a DX12 issue. And I forgot that I had switched to DX12 just a couple days ago which brought out a few more FPS. I went back to DX11 until the next release
