Abysmal terrain LOD in VR even with 400TLOD - edit: nevermind

Edit: reported resolution is only “wrong” when enabling foveated rendering, and disabling that doesn’t magically make TLOD better, so this was a false report.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue: Terrain level of detail (the geometry and LOD-ing of texture) is very poor compared to MSFS 2020 in VR. I suspect this could be due to MSFS 2024 seeing the headset resolution as half of what it truly is, and then the TLOD algorithm being conservative with loading detail as it thinks you are playing on a low res screen. For example:

Virtual Desktop:
Render res configured to 3212x2972 per eye, MSFS 2024 developer FPS overlay shows 1606x1486

MSFS 2020 developer FPS overlay shows the correct resolution (3212x2972)

you can also see the incorrect resolution in graphics settings:

vs MSFS 2020 which shows correct res:

Meta Horizon Link
Headset configured to 4864x2592, MSFS developer FPS overlay shows 1224x1336

DLSS/TAA/FSR disabled, dynamic settings disabled

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Fly low near mountain terrain, observe poor terrain quality until you get really close to the terrain

  2. Fly the same scenario in MSFS2020 with conservative TLOD setting and observe much more detailed terrain

YOUR SETTINGS

What VR peripherals are you using: Meta Quest 3, via Virtual Desktop streamer, however identical behaviour is observed using Meta Horizon Link (over USB)

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it? Enable developer mode to get the “display FPS” overlay which reports the resolution MSFS is targetting

[PC Only] What GPU (Graphics Card) do you use? RTX 4070ti

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share? AMD 7800X3D

MEDIA

I have an RAI Archive but not allowed to attach

400TLOD, no DLSS/TAA (usually run DLSS perf preset M), 1st pic shows awful terrain in distance, following pics shows how close i had to get before it started to load some detail.
