It would be nice to have discrete commands added to control the dual encoder knobs used to navigate the Garmin screens. This would be especially helpful for Xbox pilots as we do not have access to anything like a Knobster.
Currently the knobs only respond to “cockpit cursor increase/decrease” and the cursor must be used to highlight whichever knob is currently being adjusted. Something like “increase/decrease inner knob”, “increase/decrease outer knob” and “push knob button” is what I’m looking to be added.
I built my own Knobster-like device for Xbox which I’ve programmed to output key presses but the only keys that the Garmin CSRS knobs in the sim recognize is the left and right arrow keys, and the desired knob must be highlighted with the cursor first. This is what I hoped to avoid, as without zooming in on the Garmin first, it can be difficult to manipulate the knob to change screens and still keep your eyes out the window.
My knob can still be used to change COMM frequencies, heading, etc., or anything else that has a discrete command that can be assigned to it. But I already have an Axair MIAP for that, so I don’t need that functionality.
If anyone is interested in building one of these, PM me and I’ll provide you with a part list, wiring diagram and the Arduino sketch. All you’d have to do is put it together. It’s not difficult if you can solder and this was my first attempt ever at coding an Arduino. I had Chat GPT write the code and teach me how to upload it into the board.
I think I spent less than $50 and you could do it for less if you have a 3D printer to print your own housing. I had to buy one for about $15.
