Advice on GPU upgrade

Hi everyone,

I need your help to understand a few things with regards to my GPU upgrade.
Currently, I am having a Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1080 along with a Quest 2.
The system works fine, and I have a smooth experience - but feel that it could be better.

However, I am looking forward to buy a RTX 3080 or 3070 (hopefully in 2022 :-). As there is a significant price difference, I am wondering which card would provide me with the smoothest experience.

I haven’t really enjoyed the Ryzen 5 3600 as I got it last year, and hopefully dx12 will unlock the cores - i am not looking at upgrading the cpu.

I also have a 1080p monitor, but use the quest 2 mainly to fly mainly and I have the resolution at max (5408 x 2736 at 90hz).

The question is:
Would a RTX 3070 16GB version be better than a RTX 3080 ? for my system. I just want to be able to enjoy the GA flying and scenery. I want less/no jagged lines or pixels and objects jumping at you - with a good LOD - in VR. (PS: I have Aerofly FS2 and it is very smooth. I am aiming for the same level of clarity in FS2020 !)

Not planning to add money to my system apart from the GPU as I have spent enough, and I am a casual simmer.

Thanks for your advice.

Good luck in finding a 3080 in 2022! You’ll need it!

A 3080 would be better but a 3070 is no slouch, or a 3060ti. 3080 has 10GB of vram, msfs uses just under that on my system so you’re pushing it, but tbf ive heard no complaints from 3080 owners regarding lack of vram and msfs.

I went from a 1080 to a 3000 series gpu, you’ll really notice a difference, gpu is king when it comes to vr. Don’t forget 2022 should bring 4000 series gpu’s.

But about aerofly clarity/performance in msfs, i dont think you’ll quite attain that, sadly, with any cpu/gpu/ram combination.

Thanks tykey6,

indeed finding a 3080 is quite hard to get and not to mention scalper prices ! but I am on the lookout.
Hopefully 2022 will be a better year for gpu availability.

Just my input I have a 3080TI oc and strict vr and runs great literally incredible 11900k

I bought a prebuild with an 3080.
Was lucky found an HP omen for 2250 euros.
3080 rocks. Tried 1060/2060/3060/3060TI
Now I am happy. Btw Reverb was also one of my best upgrades. VR is so amazing now :sparkles:

You may want to consider AMD 6800XT or 6900XT. The sim will use whatever VRAM availble but for VR, not starving vram is key to stutter free performance. The sim was crashing every flight in VR with AMD gpus until sim update 5. With the xbox using AMD GPU, the fate has flipped and Radeon users have not had as much CTDs or stutter issues since SU5.

For reference, I run my 6800XT overclocked to 2600MHz and run the sim at 100OXR and 100 Render scale in sim. I have the fps locked at 32 frames max and the sim is stutter free butter smooth with most settings in ultra and high. I am not sure there are many gpus that can run at that speed. 6900XT prices are still better than 3080TI or 3090. Just an option for you to consider.

Me too! I have an oc’d 3080ti FE, cost me about £1050, good card, faster than the zotac 3090 it replaced. I have an older cpu but i’m in no rush to upgrade that, it chugs along just fine at about 60-70% utilization whereas my gpu is at 98-100%.
