Aircraft not Clearing the Runway After Landing

First off: I haven’t flown airliners in the sim to/from major airports in a very long time.

Today, I was landing at KDCA in the 737 and I was surprised to be given a go around due to an aircraft on the runway. I landed anyway, and noted that there was, indeed, an airliner stopped at the end of the runway unmoving. ATC was doing its repeated asking for it to exit the runway when able.

I saw some similar behavior when parked at the gate at KSFO. I had switched to an external view and was observing the traffic coming and going and I saw both aircraft stopped on the runway not exiting and aircraft stopped just off the runway also not moving. I observed these aircraft sitting there for a very long time without being “cleared” by the traffic engine.

I was surprised to encounter this, because I thought this poor ground AI aircraft behavior had been addressed several SU/AAUs ago.

I know there are many of you that regularly fly airliners in/out of major airports (i.e. experience significant traffic) and use the default ATC. How are you finding this and what are your experiences?

I do think they made some incremental improvements, but never fixed it fully.

If you’re flying on PC, the AIFlow/AIGround tool can help in many of these situations. It’s one of the many things it’s designed to help. If you haven’t tried, it may be an option. Available on fs.to.

My understanding is that at its core, some of these issues are down to base airport errors with taxiways and runways and the connections between them. There can be spots where they don’t link, and planes just get stuck.

This happens occasionally, I just ignore it as the AI traffic and ATC still needs a lot of work.

I see this on occasion, it’s just happened flying out of default EGAA. A Jet2 737 got stuck at the end of the runway and prevented my takeoff… naturally I ignored it, and got given a number to call by ATC as well as an escort by two RAF fighter jets.

The broken taxi link situation suggested by @BigCow74 definitely has some relation, however, to test this further, I’ve changed starting starting positions all over EGAA in the Fenix and Progressive Taxi always gets me to the runway. I’ve even done circuits, taxiing off at different points to see what PT would do, no problems getting to the gate.

Are PT and AI paths completely unrelated to one another?
