Aircraft states backup

I want to make a backup of all custom camera settings. I know where to find it but Microsoft won’t let me copy it. Any hints how to do it?

Reason for this is that I want to do a clean install of the sim before 27th and I know that after uninstalling the custom camera configs are gone.

I think I was too early with my aknowledge this as the solution. I have access to the folder, but if I want to copy the files to another location then I get the message that it cannot be written to that location, which is some normal folder on my E drive.

Here is a screenshot. My sim is installed on a M.2 ssd (drive E:). The custom camera files are in a folder linked to by this link:

c:\Users\kaha\Appdate\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_xxxxxx\LocalCache

and there in subfolder SimObjects\Airplanes...some..aircraft…

I have read/write access to those files but cannot copy them to another location.

Edit: I was able to copy them when I had the sim installed on C:, but I changed this to E: with a reinstallation. The message say that the file cannot be copied to a location that does not support encryption.

Find folder named WpSystem on your E disk and go to:
S … > AppData > Local > Packages > Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe > LocalCache > SimObjects > Airplanes

Aren’t the camera files saved on the cloud?

Thank you, but I still get the error message. That’s because

E:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-1090431020-938117899-2922549358-1001\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

and

C:\Users\kaha\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

is the same physical folder on drive e:

I did several un-and reinstalls because of a CTD I experienced and always the custom camera files were gone. The state.cfg files were retained and still available after uninstallation.

It all looks a bit strange to me. My files aren’t encrypted.

Can’t you remove the encryption? Try that cfg file: right click, properties, advanced…

But you might not have permission for that either.

Correct, it’s greyed out.

So how did it get encrypted in the first place? Is that a property of the E-drive? Encrypt everything?

I guess you’d have to take ownership and such. But that’s always so messy. When I need to do that I just click and click till it magically starts working, without really knowing what I’m doing

Much to the joy of hackers out there, no doubt…

Other options you might try:

  • make an empty folder, encrypt it… see if you can copy the file to that folder
  • try copying not the file but the content of the CFG file? Just Ctrl-A / Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V it in an empty notepad

No, my E drive is not encrypted. This was done by MSFS at installation time I suppose.

Everything belongs to “S-…”, an unknown account.

If I create a folder in

E:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-1090431020-938117899-2922549358-1001\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

it’s encrypted by default and I cannot copy it to somwhere else.

If I create a folder somewhere else on drive E it’s not encrypted. If I create a folder on C: and copy it to LocalCache on E it does not get encrypted and I can copy it.

So, only files and folders that are created in LocalCache on E get encrypted and cannot not be copied or moved out.

Yeah, I think you need to grab ownership to get control. Get it out of the control of that mysterious user.

But if it’s just for a backup of one cfg file I wouldn’t bother and try to copy the content. Although the question remains if you can copy it back after an update.

But you can manually encrypt a folder (is what I meant). Make a new folder on C, right click, properties, advanced… encrypt… then perhaps the copy will work. Long shot.

I can copy files in, but I don’t get them out for backup.

I can read and write them, though. I can edit, change and save them. So, I have access. I just cannot get them to be written to another folder or drive.

I of course want to get the complete “Airplanes” folder out sas it contains the custom camera files for all aircraft.

You can use winrar to “rar” (backup) cameras files.
So pack whole Airplanes folder.

Okay, then I would try grabbing ownership, to start with on just that folder. Then you might be able to turn off the encryption, since the folder then belongs to ‘you’. But describing the exact steps is complicated. I’d try to search for some good advice on that one through google.

THanks, that worked. I had to write a compressed file that was created outside of LocalCache and it did.

This is a solution.
