This has bugged me from day one. I would expect most aircraft to be able to have around 30 to 45 degrees of steering, type dependent. I found that the turning circle for the lowly Bonanza is awful as an example. I end up running on to the grass even on the widest runways. The latest F18 really hit the mark. No more than a few degrees either way so exiting the runway at the taxi points was impossible. And yes, my Thrustmaster stick is calibrated.
eg: real A318 at London City airport. See video at 3.60 I know this is rather extreme for many aircraft.
Have you tried turning the sensitivity down on your rudders? There was an issue with this a few builds back where if your sensitivity was set to high then the nose wheel would over steer and you would just end up pushing the nose wheel down the runway.
Here I have it turned way back I use twist on the joystick, and have no problems steering around the airports even at 20-30 knts…anything more and all bets are off though… Just a thought Good Luck
It is not the sensitivity or over-steering I had sorted that some time ago plus little more deadband in neutral. What I am concerned about is the fact that the steering on many of the aircraft is not enough to turn them off the runway on to the taxiway without going on the grass edging. It seems to be more obvious with airliners. I also noted that the freebie F18 in the latest update the steering is so minimal it would not turn off the runway at all. ATC is now yelling exit immediately!
Taxiing is an issue sice day one. On the outside it looks like the front wheel turns far enough but it is not translated onto the ground. Which means either the weight on the nosewheel is not high enough or the friction value (rubber/tarmac) is way too low.
It has to be something to do with your controllers, I’m having no difficulty turning the F18 onto the taxiways. I caught up with a group of other F18 flyers in Hawaii the other day and none of them appeared to be having difficulties turning off the runway, so it seems that there is something significantly different about your system or technique.
I’ve no experience with airliners, so can’t comment there.
I may have solved it… First thing was after the latest update, all my controller settings were defaulted. Two: In General everythng was set in “Easy Mode”. Rest as many settings as I can remember and tried a test flight with the Robin CAP10. Appears after landing that it will virtually turn in it’s own length. I will test something bigger, ie; an A320 or something similar for turning circle. Thanks for your comments. Will report back soon.
The steering amount in the contact points section are roughly half what they should be. Compounding this is the speeds that full steering is available is set too low. An aircraft WILL attempt to turn at maximum rate at 20 knots, and whether it falls over whilst doing so is a consequence of the pilot’s actions. The sim however limits max turns to say below 10 knots instead.
Take the Caravan - it CAN turn up to 51.5 degrees L/R, but they have set 22 degrees as the maximum steering angle, 1/2 of what it should be. That 22 degrees is then also only available below 10 knots, and less above it.
Ah ha! It’s not just me. Earlier I took out the Bonanza. I had to clip the edge of the grass on entering a taxi way so I would end up on the yellow centre line. Tail draggers seem less affected.
What I’ve never understood is why certain aircraft seem to turn much better than others. For example, the default A320 turns great, but I’ve always (and still) had problems with the 747 and 787. You literally have to be taxiing like less than 5mph to make any tight turn. Same with most of the prop aircraft. Granted I don’t have rudder pedals and have mine set to auto-rudder, but it makes no difference.
I even know others who have flight sim with a more advanced setup than my basic one and they still complain about how poorly most aircraft turn, especially the airliners (except the A320).
It’s really disappointing for me since I took a nearly 6 month break from the sim hoping this major issue would get fixed, but now that I’m back I see it’s still not .
