Airport Updates (to ingame airports)

Are we going to get updates for airports that are in the game already that are either incomplete or updated?

For instance Baltimores Thurgood Marshall airport doesnt have its main runway 15R/33L in the game despite being the most used in real life

Seoul Incheon is missing half its runways neither 14L/34R or 14R/34L are in the game.

Dublin Airport now has added 10L/28R

These are just a few, not to mention whole new aiports opened like Istanbuls Havalimani Airport, Beijing Daxing Airport, or Chengdu Airport just as an example.

Hello,
I am going to take this out of Wishlist. I know that there are a lot of airport bugs out there. However, they need to be dealt with, one by one:

As can be seen in most of the updates, they list the airports they’ve fixed, either adding missing airports or updating.

But there are so many airports, and airports change all the time, I doubt they’ll ever be able to keep up. If there are particular airports you’re interested in getting fixed, if you’re not interested in fixing airports yourself (fixing taxiways, runways and parking spots isn’t all that hard with the help of Airport Design Editor for MSFS 2020 | FSDeveloper), flightsim.to has an addon request page where you can request somebody to do it for you (and everyone else).

I’d settle for night terminal lighting at places like KMIA, and KMSP… LOL. Just give me a few lights.

Better yet, why not include community upgraded airports like X-Plane does?

I’m sorry if you are on X-box. I do hope they release the freeware marketplace sooner than later for you all, AND that they make it easy for people to release product into for public consumption.

As far as including community upgraded airports, I think that was the whole point of the other project that Jorg was trying to get support for from the community, and there ended up being zero interest from anyone on it. Granted, that was a year ago, maybe it would get more traction now?

Starting in Sim Update 12, we’ll have an Alpha or Beta version of the Scenery Gateway System that may help with this (see the latest feedback snapshot). I am not sure if this system will be limited to global updates to generic scenery or if it will also incorporate specific airport fixes. Hopefully the latter, which would greatly speed up how fast we can get some of these bugs fixed.

This was the system I was talking about that Jorg looked for feedback from the community and essentially got nothing. Granted, that was extremely likely because not too many people understood what it is. I don’t. A detailed discussion on how it might work would have likely garnered more feedback. Perhaps there was such a discussion? I didn’t see it. I’m sure it will take some work to get it working properly. I do have high hopes for it.

Pretty sure it was the community that pressed for it in the first place.

Oh, absolutely. But when Jorg created a request for comment in terms of what we would like to see in it, he got nothing in response. He was visibly disappointed in that. So they went ahead and developed a product anyway because he could clearly see the value in such a feature. We’ll see how well they specified its requirements in the beta, and it will eventually be an excellent feature I’m sure.

go to the X-Plane scenery gateway, and you’ll get a pretty good idea how it works. People “claim” an airport, like checking out a library book, and have a few weeks to “return” the updated airport for review. Then a low level dev looks at the submitted airport, and either approves it, or sends it back for corrections to the author. Anyone, can check out any airport. Example, you could make improvements on an airport, and have it accepted, then a couple months later, I could check out your improvement, and add to it, then submit it. Updated airports that have been approved for the gateway, are then periodically added to the base sim.

So does it allow community development of scenery then? IOW, multiple people working on the same scenery?

That sounds like an amazing idea. I’m going through my first airport improvement now. It’s very tedious, especially since the Bing data in the sim isn’t the latest. I may be too much a perfectionist to ever release it.

This could also be harvested by the AI engine to teach it airport building techniques. Although the last time I remember MS crowded sourced AI learning it didn’t go so well and an AI troll was created. :frowning:

For MSFS I think that would be tough with the current SDK. If it came with GitHub integration it might be a little easier but the PR merges could be a nightmare.

Yes, I get what you mean. Especially given the experience level of people and the current state of the development tools which are pretty crude and prone to TONS of easily made mistakes.

It would be a cool idea to do, but, given the current state of development tools, I agree it would be too difficult to maintain a quality system.

Well, if XP can do it with one “developter lite” overseeing their version, I don’t see why it couldn’t be translated to MFS. In any event, Flightsim(dot)to has filled the void for now.

Hmm, one person downloads and checks out every single submission?

Not that it’s a bad idea, and they already do that, and I’m sure you’re aware of everyone’s complaints about how it’s handled today (how long it takes for submissions to arrive). I’m sure FS would need quite a large team to be able to do it, plus give them some tools for checking the consistency and validity of the submission. The quality control of even payware products for MSFS is absolutely horrendous in terms of structure / file naming, cfg file consistency and construction. I have to go in and “fix” nearly everything I download in one way or another. Many are flat out broken and would cause CTD’s, and others are just my OCD for consistency and information I like to have properly done.
