AMD 6800 XT is relatively comparable to Nvidia 3080 but when considering the following factors, I find difficulty in deciding which card I need to buy to upgrade my PC. An advice will be much appreciated
Factor #1 VRAM in AMD 6800 XT is 16 Gb while only 10 GB in Nvidia 3080. In other threads, members were talking about the possbility that Asobo will increase LOD drawing distance which mean, we will most likely will need more memory
Factor #2 Ray Tracing: in todayâs review by Linus on Youtube, itâs clear that generally Nividia is better. I understand that Microsoft Flight Simulator does not support DX12 or Ray Tracing yet but itâs a matter of time. AMD 6800 XT performance suffers when we turn on Ray Tracing. I wonder if the performance of AMD cards will improve by more adjustments by game developers or we have to wait for the next generation to see difference
Factor #3 DLSS. Nvidia is leading and AMD is yet to show her answer for that. I wonder if Flight Simulator will ever support DLSS ?!! My understanding is that Nvidia use its supercomputers to upscale âscreenshotsâ of the games and add the data (algorithms) in their drivers. Is this something doable with Flight Simulator where we have the full planet rendered ??
Factor #4 AMD has less ports than Nvidia cards (2 display ports + 1 HDMI + 1 USB C) so anyone with more than 2 monitors (and VR) will probably have a problem.
Factor #5 Driver and stability. AMD had bad history regarding stability of its drivers and the support of third parties (software, games). However, I heard that in last few years, it has been improved a lot and some people think the support of game developers will be even better since AMD now has its cards in both PlayStation and Xbox.
So, what do you think ? In my opinion, Nvidia is better so far for flight Simulator but Iâm still hesitant because of the 16 GB of VRAMâŠ
Before i begin, i want to say i do not find LTT as a reliable source for my purchases. I watch him, but i never take him seriously. I mostly rely on other webpages like GN, Guru3d, Anandtech etc. (He was in my top three years ago, when he wasnt that famous.)
I will try to respond your Factors and in the end i will write my opinion.
We discussed this in another topic. Users with 3080 and 3090 reported 10gb VRAM enough for flight Simulator. My personal opinion, i am not only playing Flight Simulator, but also other stuff where i install tons of mods and assets so 10GB Vram is not a vram i am going to pay 700-800 $ and upgrade from my 8gb card (habit from work). I am also moving to 3 screen setup, since i did not like the idea of VR (after trying it) the only immersion i get is looking around. I found it hard to control the panels. VFR was ultra fun tho, since i only needed a joystick. (I also have lazy eye)
Ray Tracing is nvidiaâs strong side. Personally i am hopeful of AMD considering consoles have customised RDNA2 & AMD stuff. Deal is, since XBOX and FS belong to Microsoft, they will make sure it is going to run good on XBOX because they will earn more money from general audience than they earn from hardcore simmers. (of course my opinion without any research). So from my point of view Ray Tracing is not important right now. It may be 2 years then i will upgrade.
I do not want stupid ray tracing where water surface looks like mirror. I want real ray tracing.
As far as i know ASOBO need to send screenshots to nVidia for DLSS. (based on what i read online). AMD has SAM which increase performance with new 6000 series if used with 5000 series CPUâs. So if you check test results with Intel CPU + 6800 (both XT & normal) will be slower than Zen3 + 6800.
Normally i do not trust AMD on this but they are dominating consoles right now. So i am hopeful.
My Personal opinion. (I have been using nvidia since their first models, generally i forgot that cards name. So i am kinda nvidia fanboy)
As MSRP both 6800xt and 6800 cheaper than MSRP 3080. There is no way i am going to buy 3080 if MSRP stays like this.
I will only comment on 4K because of my planned timeline i will be on 4k on March 2021 and triple screen later, and for 4k none of them is satisfactory for me.
If i would stay on 2k or downgrade to FullHD there is no point paying a lot to GPU. Which one of them gives best performance for its price i would go with it. 6800XT or may be 3070? depends on what you play.
Guru3D Tests show that Nvidia still dominating Flight Simulator 2020 @4k (they used 9900K) i still need to see Zen3 tests since i am going to upgrade one.
I did not like the DEFAULT 6800 and 6800XT designs. They do not have back opening. Although i have really good case air flow, i dont want my GPU to blow all hot air into my case and mainboard from sides.
I would definitely go with AIB if i am going to purchase 6800 or 6800XT.
3090 is really similar to 3080 on paper for this reason i passed on 3090 as well.
I will decide after i see 6900XTX and 3080ti results and get one of them.
Summary: If you want to upgrade because you are expecting 120FPS in Flight Simulator do not do it. As with all Flight Simulators in the past spending 6000$ for you New PC will not help you to get 60fps straight. In the end you will be frustrated and come to forums and open topic âWhy i am getting 30fps with 10900k and 3090 on ULTRA UBER Graphics???â or âI spend 4000$ for my new 5950x system i cant pass 40+ fps!!!â etc. Flight Simulator still have time as we all can see it, just buy whatever you can buy and upgrade when you see fit. Still gonna say, wait 6900XTX and 3080Ti.
EDIT: Based on the YT channelâs benchmark video i have posted below. 6800XT is better choice than a 3080 if used with good ZEN3 CPU.
And you also forgot to add people running with 4K Ultra and rendering scale at 200% and wondering why their $5000 PC is getting only 25 fps. There have already been multiple threads about that since the 3000 series launch. lol
Thanks for sharing the video. I agree, itâs an impressive performance ⊠for now⊠Which made me wonder, will it be future proof: after adding VR, other mods, addons, Ray Tracing ??
I didnât read anything in your post that has made me change my mind in waiting for the Asus 3090 Rog Strix OC from coming in to stock at my vendors of choice. Pretty much all your points, except factor 4, are relevant to me.
yea⊠Flight Simulator historically is always frustrating and for every version, we needed to wait for 1-2 years to get hardware in the market to do an acceptable performance. Anyway, Iâm used to it Iâm fine with 30-40 FPS.
But I have to admit that FS2020 is better programmed than previous ones. I mean its performance is really better than my expectation with my current old graphic card.
In the 30+ years that Iâve been messing around with PCs, the only brand that has consistently worked is Nvidia. The only brand that has consistently failed is ATI. I spent over a week trying to get an ATI card to work in Linux, but the Nvidia worked first boot. That said, AMD make the better CPUs. If they would have bought Nvidia instead of ATI, weâd all be in a better place.
When it comes to computer hardware, Iâm just glad weâre finally seeing competition again. Iâm not a fan of any particular brand. A brand will earn my money by giving me the absolute best bang for my buck. In the past, that has always been an Intel / nVidia build because they best suited my use-case scenario.
Intel stagnated for years giving us minimum performance improvements (but huge price tag increases) between generations because they had no competition. They didnât have to innovate. They were the only real player in the game. And while they were laughing and ridiculing AMD and their first gen Zen architecture, AMD snuck up on them, kicked them in the nuts, and sailed right past them. I currently run an AMD CPU (Ryzen 2700X) and still pleased as can be with it 2 years later. And at this rate, my next CPU in a couple of years will likely be AMD, unless Intel manages to pull a â â â â â and walk on water to deliver me something truly next-gen. And I doubt that very much.
As much as I love nVidia products and have been using them over the years, theyâve been the same. Itâs been over a decade since they had any competition at the high end and have stagnated when it comes to consumer grade GPUs innovation. Itâs been like a dozen years or so at best since weâve seen anything more than marginal performances increasees from generation to generation of their GPUs. Yeah, we get a new feature set that next to no one will ever use every few generations, but performance increases have been minimal at best.
Itâs a bit different with nVidia this time around and they gave us a huge performance increase that essentially renders past generations of their cards "worthlessâ (meaning in dollar value, not in actual use). I have no evidence of this, obviously, but I suspect they had some kind of insider info on what AMD was brewing up with their Big Navi architecture and had to respond with huge performance increases with their 3000 series.
So time will tell what GPU Iâll get next, which will likely be about the time Iâm hunting for a new CPU in about 2 years. But it will be based on actual numbers and value for my money, and not on brand.
Based on this Performance overview looks like GPU upgrade is more important than CPU.
My pc setup is 8700k at 5.1ghz ( delided) +1080ti + 32g ram ( gskill 3200 c14) and thinking to go for 3090RTX. Check the difference between 8700k-3090RTX vs 10900k-3090RTX at ultra settings / 1440p etc
Why is the future of Flight simulator depending on an AMD 6800 or Nvidia 3080 while it still runs better on a 1080ti? Yes, not on ultra 4K but almost flawless on high 2K. Like mentioned before in this thread, if you bought a GPU only to play FS on ultra, yes, you better spent your money for a lot of other nice things. Not saying that a a 3080 or 6800 are bad choices per se. But really, to buy one only to run FS on ultra is plain ignorance.
Also, what I not hear or see in this thread, other than performance, is power consumption. Why is this not a topic while comparing these cards? Spending 50 Watts or so more to get 5 fps more out, is it not a little insane? I donât have to remember what Iâve played nowadays. I just look at my electricity bill and I can tell
Whether you choose a 3080/3090/6800XT or rumoured for Jan '21 3080ti, doesnât really matter.
From the 7-8 tech reviewers & benchmarks, all cards perform within a few frames from each other & considering the 3080ti is rumoured to sit between a 3080 & 3090, it wonât be worth the extra ÂŁ200.
I wouldnât bother with anything below a 3080 or anything above it unless you need it for editing/rendering software. Nvidia have a better track record & more support in drivers/rtx/dlss etc. So personally Iâd grab a 3080. Thatâs what I did & Iâm very happy with it. Iâd rather sacrifice a couple of unnoticeable frames, spending less & then upgrade in 2-3yrs when the next jump in performance happens.
Iâm glad I donât have surplus cash and the interest of hunting down rare next gen GPU on the shelves. Iâm actually enjoying running the game with my GTX1080Ti with 1440p ultrawide. If not itâs kind of headache to choose from the RTX3080 and RX6800XT trying to speculate how the game will advance.
Well, I upgraded to the Ryzen 5600x and now have cancelled my near two month pre-order for a non existent RTX3080 (not expected in Oz until sometime in Q1, 2021)and am head of the queue with my supplier for a water cooled Asus ROG Strix AMD 6800XT instead. nVidiaâs management can go boil their bottoms.
