AMD Card Suggestions?

Hi All,

So right now my system is:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU
  • 32G RAM
  • RX5700XT GPU

I am hesitant to upgrade from my current CPU as that will require moving to AM5 - so new CPU, mobo, RAM. But what I can do now is the GPU. I’m not going NVIDIA - I refuse to pay the markup for their name and actually haven’t had a bad experience with my AMD GPU. 2K is my resolution of choice and I have a triple 32" monitor setup. What I’d like to is run Radeon’s Eyefinity setup and fake MSFS into seeing one monitor. Of course, I want to do this with everything from stock aircraft through the PMDG, iniBuilds, and Fenix planes as well.

So my question is: can a 6700xt card handle this? 7700xt? Is it worth upgrading to a 7800xt or even a 7900xt? The 7900xt seems overkill but I’m willing to at least consider it. I don’t plan on doing VR and I don’t plan on doing anything more than 2k for the foreseeable future.

Opinions and experience welcome - looking forward to your thoughts!

Thanks!

Mark

I’ve not heard of that software, but I do run my 6600XT at 1440p on a single monitor. It does ok with a mix of medium to high settings, but wouldn’t handle all ultra settings or larger resolution well. So my guess is if you are planning to run triple monitors, you’ll probably want the best GPU you can afford. If you can afford the 7900xtx, that would be my recommendation. The way AMD pricing has gone, it’s not terribly more expensive than some lower end cards.

Eyefinity is an option in the AMD driver software to represent multiple monitors as one monitor to the system. So instead of having 3 discrete 2560x1440 monitors, Windows thinks I have one 7680x1440 monitor. The desktop spans all three monitors seamlessly. So, you can set MSFS to that resolution and get an “ultrawide” setup without paying for an ultrawide monitor.

But, it’s too much for my 5700xt. That’s why I’m thinking of an upgrade. And yes the 7900xtx is something I’m looking at too.

Thanks!

Hi there,
I’ve come from a similar setup like you about a year ago: Ryzen 3700x + Radeon 5700XT
From there I went to 3700x + 7900XTX, where I then noticed that the CPU is a bottleneck for the GPU as soon as you’re going towards 3D-Cities like NYC.
So the next step then was Ryzen 5800X3D + 7900XTX (also wanted to stay AM4).

Playing in 4K because in my opinion MSFS really benefits from the higher resolution due to the small instruments in the cockpit etc.

So now I’m quite happy with the performance, although it’s not outstanding, with some low framerates in extreme cities (about 30FPS NYC low level flight) and the random stutter; I think my TrackIR also slightly reduces performance.

It seems your resolution would be even more than 4K (pixel counting), so I’d recommend the XTX if you want to stay AMD

I also have a 7900xtx and love it! :+1: I drive a 55" Qled 4k HDR10 screen in the sim along with a second small monitor for other apps and the xtx has no issues.

Btw - I live in an area close by Micro Center and I was able to purchase the 7900xtx for $200 off normal price as it was an open box item. No issues with it and it has the same warranty as a new one. Not sure if you have a store close by but you can find the open box gpu’s on their web site with the search filter.

Oooh I do too… That’s a good idea! Thanks!

So far it sounds like the xtx is the winner here. I appreciate everyone’s comments!
