same here, defaults for the card. It comes with a factory overclock though, but should be rated for that.
I went to install it, and instead let the installer “repair” 20.9.1 because that one is Windows Certified. However, I have noticed cooler temps since the repair, and frame rates as high as low 70s in some cases (flying over the Pacific along the California Coast.) That said, frame rates at a busy airport like KSFO drop into the low to mid 30s, which is an improvement over the early days of low 20s and fans on the GPU sounding like a hovercraft.
All-in-all I think things are getting “dialed-in” and now that I’ve turned off Azure Text-to-Speech I have yet to experience a CTD event.
That is exactly what I’ve done. Factory defaults for everything but fan tuning. It seems to work well.
It may be beneficial for those encountering issues to select the “Factory Reset” option that is available under the “Additional” button in the installation menu.
This does a proper driver uninstall, restart, install new driver and another restart.
Dear all,
I am having many CTDs when flying with MSFS 2020. My configuration:
- AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT
- PowerColor RX 5700 XT Red Devil
- MSI x570 GAMING PLUS
- 32 GB CORSAIR RAM
I have:
- reinstalled the game
- reinstalled Windows 10 (2004)
- run it as admin
- set FPS limit to 30
- disabled Text to Speech
- chosen other pilots
- disabled traffic and KI/LIVE
- set graphic settings to low
- 1000 other things
… and nothing helped. I know that the game was running some weeks ago without any issue.
This evening I tried to undervolt my card within the AMD Radeon Software and I was able to fly about 45 minutes without any issues. But then I had to go to bed :-))) will give it a second try tomorrow.
But I will also test the old software. Does anyone know where to get those older drivers?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my English.
Kind regards
André
I have the RX 5700XT as well and I really love this graphic card. However, with my R5 2600 and my 16GB RAM I‘m getting 25-35 FPS in the A320neo cockpit which isn’t quite good to fly with. My CPU is running at 50%
you’re going to be ‘main thread’ limited with that R5 2600. Especially in a tubeliner. Nothing the GPU can do about that.
Doesn’t matter that the ‘CPU is at 50%’, only 1 thread can run the main thread, that the other 11 threads are running at around 25% is a given.
@MortThe2nd Yeah I noticed that „mainthread“ is displayed almost all time. So should a CPU upgrade solve this and if yes, do I need a high single core performance?
What’s that?
Basically yes. I would suggest waiting for the 5000 series AMD CPU’s. If AMD is correct it will include a 19% boost in IPC (instructions per clock) over the 3000 series, and a higher clockspeed (as always, await independent benchmarks of course). But looks like the Ryzen 5600X will be great for MSFS.
If you happen to be running on a B450 or X470 chipset on your motherboard it should be a straight drop-in with a BIOS update around January 2021. If you’re still on a B300 series motherboard, you would need a motherboard upgrade as well.
the ‘higher performance’ RAM settings in your BIOS. A lot of memory will run at lower speeds standard in the BIOS. Enabling the XMP profile in BIOS will unlock the full speed of the RAM.
Hi André,
Give these Voltage/Frequency settings a try. It helped me to stabilize my system. GPU Max Frequency 1999 / Voltage 1099. Keep Memory at Default for now.
Also 20.9.1 is very stable. You could try that recommended version.

Athena
Agreed. I’ve had good luck with this driver.
I’ve reverted to 100% default setting on the GPU with good luck. However, I am going to give your settings a try. Thanks for the info! ![]()
@MortThe2nd As far as I know we only have the 3000 series on the market. Why shouldn’t I buy one of the 4000 series?
They’re skipping the 4000 series so that the numbering lines up with the laptop CPU’s again.
The 5000 series got announced two weeks ago (5th of oktober) and should start hitting the market in november/december.
Thank you. I will give it a try later.
Currently I have got 20.9.1 - but MSFS is very unstable. It’s sad, because I just bought the new equipment especially for MSFS
One reply to my own question: AMD is offering also older versions. Found it with Google; I didn’t find the download button - I thought it was just the release notes; but it’s both.
@MortThe2nd Thank you for the information. So if I‘m going to pair my RX 5700XT with a R5 5600X about how many FPS am I going to get more? Let’s compare the A32N cockpit view with around 29-32 FPS in average with some stutters.
Take all of this with a grain of salt, and await independent benchmarks, but from AMD’s presentation you should expect a 19% increase in single thread performance compared to the 3000 series, at the same clockspeed. I don’t know how big the difference was between the 2000 and 3000 series, so in your case it should be even more.
The 5000 chips should run at higher clocks as well, so that should add a bit more for you.
Purely theoretical though, since we know the sim will not scale 1:1 with single core, and maybe after you won’t be limited by main thread anymore after a certain point, a new bottleneck might raise its head.
All in all, I do expect a decent increase after upgrading to the new chips, but personally I will await those independent benchmarks, since right now we only have AMD’s word for it, and that was not specific for MSFS.
I have an update for this topic. Since I reduced the voltage on my GPU, I got further into finding the problem, as I couldn’t imagine that this was a GPU issue.
I then found out that my power supply, a be quiet dark power pro 10 with 650 watts has different rails. I have now splitted the power of the GPU to 2 rails and lo and behold, no more crashes. Maybe it helps someone.
I got RTX2080 8GB. found out it is very clear with remote buildings but closer buildings are vibrating. Make your eyes very uncomfortable. Anyone have idea to fix it?
