AMD's new frame creator? 250% more fps? This would be a boon for MSFS 2024

Hi,
Just read this article for the newer AMD video cards. It seems to work at the driver level so no apps or anything to have it work.
Thoughts? I could get an AMD 7800 video card and it might have the performance of a card twice the money.

AMD’s next-gen frame generation tech rolls out to boost FPS in more games (msn.com)

Very interesting. I look forward to some YouTube reviews of this technology.
For me Fidelity > FPS, but if we can get smooth, stutter-free 60+ FPS everywhere, all the time, for 7800 XT money…

The sticky wicket of course, is how effective ray tracing is in FS24, and whether an nVidia 4080 will be worth twice the price to get better RT performance.

Intruduce an incredible amount of artifacts.
Totally unacceptable

I’m more interested in the FSR 3 implementation and how that performs & looks.

So you’ve seen it working?

If this introduces input lag like current frame generation techniques do then it’s a meh for me

This is in the article. Not sure what it means.

"AFMF 2 supports borderless full-screen game modes on RX 7000 GPUs and AMD’s Radeon Chill low-latency FPS cap to limit the lag that FPS boosters can inflict. "

That sounds like such a tech buzzword name lol. I’m guessing it’s just an FPS cap so that you don’t spend time generating frames you can’t see because of your monitors refresh rate/stable 60fps being good enough. I think the tools available now can already do this if you configure them right.

Nvidia is doing that since the end of 2022 with their DLSS3 (Frame generator). It’s not really new. AMD was also doing it, but through software, now they will use the hardware (hence why limited to the RDNA 2 and 3, because they have dedicated hardware for that).

My point is, unfortunately nothing new, but the good thing is Nvidia will probably make their move now (DLSS4?).

Yeah, that’s what it sounds like to me as well.
I know I wouldn’t be trying for 150 FPS.

Also, since AMD announced they’re getting out of the higher end GPU business…

Since most performance problems in MSFS are CPU-related when using a modern graphics card, all those new features won’t help. Also since this isn’t an ego shooter fps above 40 won’t give you any visual improvements anyway. (Remember even a high paced action movie runs at 25fps)

As long as the CPU isn’t capable of processing everything the GPU is throwing at it, you won’t get better performance. You might get better fps like with frame generation, but not a smoother ride.

Let’s hope MSFS2024’s new engine will be able to utilize multi-core processors more efficiently, then a 4070 TI should be more than sufficient to run the sim smoothly with enough fps.

This guy gets pre-release Adrenalin drivers from AMD and explains things pretty good.

See AFMF2 review here

The best part of AFMF2 is the reduced latency along with a much smoother experience. Previously, AMD’s frame gen would cut out when the on screen action got too fast causing small stutters as it cuts in/out. By using AI, it now handles fast motion much better and rarely cuts out.

I really don’t get much of any artifacting with my 7900xtx. You’re really not going to notice any lag on a flight sim compared to a first person shooter game.

I’m finding this new AFMF 2 to be visually less clean than that of the previous “1” version.

As I pan around the cockpit, for example, I can see what I guess are “artifacts” (basically, the edges of everything seem “off” to my eye, like they are animated in just the slightest of ways, maybe even a jitteriness) on pretty much everything in view. They are subtle when moving my head slowly or normally and can be a bit drastic when I move my head quickly in a high-impact aircraft such as the JF 146.

I didn’t used to see this.

Interestingly, all of these features were toggled off by default after updating to this latest driver. My only flight yesterday in the MS PC-6 was crazy smooth and I thought that was due to this new AFMF, but it wasn’t even turned on!

I’m thinking I may have to disable it again and go back to a vsync/locked FPS situation until it can be improved.

A lot of ray tracing games require even a 4080 to rely on frame gen and upscaling tech to get decent frame rates. I couldn’t care less if a game has it because I would simply turn it off to be able to run artifact free native resolution and frame rates. If you absolutely must use ray tracing, then I suggest just getting a 4090 and brute forcing it.

But aren’t they purposely limiting ray tracing in FS2024 to a Ray Marching algorithm? That’s not going to require a 4090.

We already have ray marching, which my 7800XT handles fine at 4k. Admittedly I don’t follow all the announcements and marketing, but everyone commenting on the forums here are saying ray tracing, not marching, will be in 2024.

We will have to see how it impacts performance but it does look like they are going with a less intensive form of RT.

One thing I’m noting is I need to use Radeon Chill now with AFMF or I get howling fans when in the Welcome screen interface due to madness level FPS.

I wonder what about the technology change has altered this.

As someone who is using frame generation for a year now with about 25 - 35 fps real performance that turns into buttery smooth 60 fps I can say with confidence that your assessment is wrong.

It depends on your system and specs, and your settings. If you are CPU limited, you can still get stutters.
