I downloaded it, but it’s Monday… I won’t get to fly it until the weekend.

Nice plane, nice water effects and water spraying from lower fuselage after water take-off.
Great engine sounds.
I had to re-assign my aileron axis first though. Using XBox Elite controller.

-eelis-

just purchased - no time to fly until later though

OK…I’m smitten. Really nice work @OzWookiee !

Looking forward to it, Jeremy! Love reading your reviews - you always manage to touch on all the important areas in a succinct and interesting to read way!

(I’ll give you until tomorrow when it becomes available on Orbx store  )

That would be absolutely amazing. I love the Yunker Retrofit. When done right they still capture that look and feel, just with a little modern polish. I am glad this plane has at least the 530 GPS and other cool accessories neatly tucked away. Well done!

OK, a detailed report is on the way in a few minutes… Here are some pics to enjoy in the meantime

OH NO… just got it but the 530 display does not pop out for my RSG 530…

I love everything other than the sound looping at 1000RPM and max RPM during climb. Otherwise the sound is great.

This is as much a review as it is a potential bug report, so bear this in mind. My initial impression of the aircraft is it’s PHENOMENAL, so don’t think me pointing out potential bugs takes away from it, cause I know any issues will get resolved. Big Radials don’t F around when it comes to standing behind their product.

GENERAL:

The cats at Big Radials have done it again! Another vintage aircraft, the FIRST to justify their studio name, a legacy in MSFS because it was OzWookie’s original Freeware Goose that got them started on this journey, and what a ride this has been. You know I have an affinity for seaplanes, so this one has been on my wishlist for a LONG time. Ladies and gents, the worthy compliment to FlySimWare’s excellent Grumman Widgeon, the bigger brother… the Goose. (One of these days SOMEONE needs to do the Albatross - all we have is a Virtavia FSX model in P3D/FSX)

The aircraft is VERY well done and everything is thought out wonderfully - from the manual to the inclusion of a Canadian Fishing Bush Trip (which I can’t wait to experience - probably the best way to put some initial hours on my Goose! I love Bush Trips! But Asobo’s Bush Trips all put you in default aircraft and who wants to fly default aircraft nowadays?)

The aircraft’s initial release isn’t without some issues (I don’t think anyone has ever managed a perfect release)… let’s see if I can spot a few and maybe I am imagining things and maybe I have valid points. It’s all up to you to judge - these are just my opinions!

EXTERNAL MODEL:

You get a bunch of liveries and they are gorgeous. The paint is really nicely done, the aircraft looks beautiful. There have been plenty of shots provided by the team, so I only included a few above.

Issue #1: In the aircraft selection screen, there are TWO Gooses and one has Skis… It would be nice to have a difference reflected in the name, otherwise it looks like I have two of the same unless you pay close attention.

FLIGHT DECK:

One word comes to mind: utilitarian. Spartan. OK, two words. Perfectly fitting considering the purpose of this bird. Everything looks great with just enough wear. Perfectly serviceable and looks like it belongs in MSFS 2020. Pics included.

Issue #2: The position lights/etc on the left side. They SEEM to be reverse of what the label suggests - it looks like OFF is DOWN on the label. But in reality, they all start off in the UP position and have to be flipped DOWN to be activated. Maybe it’s the angle I am looking at. But if the function is correct, then it’s in complete opposition to the OTHER light switches on the right side of the panel which function by the logic of UP is ON. Minor thing.

SOUND:

It sounds great! At low RPM there is a beautiful gurgling sputtering thing going on. The sounds are already fine and this is through laptop speakers! I haven’t even bothered to put on headphones and listen yet. I am sure they sound even better that way.

PERFORMANCE / FLYING:

It is an absolute joy to fly. It trims nicely, the Sperry Gyropilot is capable of elevator control which allows you to fly hands off. I had no issues following the performance numbers outlined in the manual for takeoff, cruise, approach, and landing. It’s all doable, you CAN fly it by those numbers, which is GREAT to see. Which brings me to the last thing.

Issue #3: Gyropilot fun. OK… The Master switch doesn’t show which position is on and off, so I assume when the light is brighter (or UP?) it’s ON… either way. Try rotating rudder servo, it will react in EITHER position. So either it doesn’t turn off or perhaps it doesn’t turn off once it’s been on? I have to play with it. Also… That rudder servo doesn’t act in the way I am used to it acting. A similar/same gyropilot is in Lockheed Electra (not talking about the AH version for MSFS, talking about P3D default one, the one that works right)… The principle of operation is simple. Two dials are there. One shows where you are CURRENTLY going, the other is rotatable to set the heading you WANT to go. I don’t understand exactly what’s happening here, but the entire logic of this gyropilot is not what I expected. So I need some help with LATERAL setting. Elevator servo works exactly how I expect it to.

OVERALL:

This is a magnificent work. I highly suggest it to anyone who wants to fly a vintage seaplane. These guys consistently do great work and you can’t go wrong with it. It’s worth getting NOW even with a few potential minor things, cause they always get resolved, and they are nothing that will prevent you from flying the aircraft enjoyably. You CAN hand-fly it and it trims perfect and the other stuff is cosmetic. I am so in love with this thing. I hope you enjoy it too!

Great review Jeremy! From my brief time with the airplane this morning…
Addressing the issues pointed out above…
Issue 1… The second Goose on the selection screen appears to have skis…so I’m guessing that is why is is a separate aircraft.

Issue 2……there is a small button on the lower forward part of the window slide rail that locks the window. Press that and you can now open the window (and hear the engines increase in volume - lovely).

I will have to look at the lights a little closer. My light discipline is not the best .

Issue 4. Cold and dark…. Remember to use the hand fuel pump behind your head to get the fuel pressure up. Think of it as a primer or wobble pump on the FI Spitfire.

The Gyro-pilot I have yet to try…it’s too much fun hand flying this bird!

Enjoy flying the plane. Need to play with the gyro-pilot more to get a feel of how it operates.

Also need to check how the NAV1 needle works.

OK… Thank you. About to try the window opening. I DID use the Wobble Pump a bunch! I am gonna try a cold and dark start again and see if that was a fluke. It’s MSFS. Sometimes things happen because… “because it happens, roll the bones”…

With the fuel pressure up, all the fuel valves open, Mags on and the throttles opened a little, they fire up, but you have to keep the starter energized for a bit longer than you might expect. They don’t catch immediately, unlike some other aircraft out there.
