The main reason it doesn’t make any difference is because the autobrake setting on most airliners targets a deceleration rate and not a brake pressure, so if you use reverse thrust it just reduces the braking to get the same effect. If you use manual braking then the reversers will lead to a shorter distance than without, although if you stamp on the brakes with max manual that is so aggressive the reverser probably doesn’t add a whole lot.
First, to those saying takeoff and landing distances are different, that was in no way the point of his question. The landing distance is just about always shorter. Be that as it may, no matter what, if you’re going to land, chances are you’ll want to take off again, so you just take the longer distance of the two and call it a day on consideration.
To answer the question, would I land at an airport with a runway right at the takeoff distance of the plane I’m flying (published, or calculated based on conditions?)?
That depends on whether we’re talking sim or real life, and then the plane type.
In real life, no way would I chance a tough runway. I’m not that experienced a pilot that I’d want to take the chance. I like living, and I don’t (currently) have an unlimited bank account.
In the sim, sure, I might consider it, for the challenge. The whole point of the sim, too me, is to give me a chance to fly planes I’ll never get the chance to fly in real life, and to fly into situations I probably won’t get the chance to in real life, along with practicing the flights I will make, is fun, too.
Illegal???
No it isn’t, not in a game. Do I really need insurance…in a game?
You haven’t bought insurance yet? Yikes, the risk some users take…
(the question was asking about IRL)
the original post is about real life flying.
