I have a Gigabyte Aero 15 laptop, i7 8750H and RTX 2070 max Q. It’s a pretty good performer in most cases, but I’d like to get MSFS running above 20FPS. I’m flummoxed that my living room PC downstairs is regularly maxing out GPU performance just in the FS menu. In flight I never see the GPU loaded above 30% and the CPU is regularly hitting 60%. I’ve hit the obvious power and Gigabyte tuning utility settings for performance (and nVidia Control Panel to make sure the game is running on the discrete GPU).
Are there any resources that are useful for a machine like this? Especially with heat and laptop-specific vagaries? I’m feeling pretty certain that I should be able push 30-60 FPS at 1080p if I find the right settings .
Have you tried reinstalling your video drivers, mine for what ever reason will do the same thing from time to time, but if I reinstall the driver it usually returns to normal, 99% gpu 60% cpu.
I have an i7-10 with a 1660 in it and it used to do 28 @ 4k 3840x2160 no problems, but alas I installed linux on it so know we dont play on that machine.
As for cooling get one of those laptop rests with the fan on it and it will help alot…

Default behaviour for laptops seems to be try to use as little power as possible so check power settings … However the same rules apply as for PC, lod and traffic are hard on the cpu, ultra graphics and a high renderscale are what hurts the gpu. The sim runs best when mainthread (cpu) is not limited and the gpu is (but not too much).

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I do run my laptop on a tall wire-mesh stand so there’s plenty of cooling. I’m also running the game on an external monitor. I’ll continue troubleshooting and taking your advice into account.
