Leg 6: Tehran (OIII), Iran to Baku (UBBB), Azerbaijan

Summary

Leg 6 takes us back North, over the Caspian Sea to Baku. Much of this flight is over water, but the scenery at the start is spectacular as we cross the mountains at the Southern end of the Caspian. A shortish flight, just under 300 Nm as the crow flies. Once again the weather is beautiful.

Leg 7: Baku (UBBB), Azerbaijan to T’Blisi (UGTB), Georgia

Summary

Leg 7 is straight West to T’blisi in Georgia. Finally, our luck with the weather breaks, with a lot of low cloud throughout this leg. I had to come down to 4,000 feet for most of the trip to get below at least some of the cloud. Fortunately visibility improves as we start out final approach, so the landing is straightforward enough.

Leg 8: T’Blisi (UGTB), Georgia to Yerevan (UDYZ), Armenia

Summary

Leg 8 is very short - just 100 Nm or so, heading South. Bit of a problem in that we needed to quickly climb to 13,000 feet to get over the mountains between Georgia and Armenia which also meant that getting back down and slowed down in time to land proved too much of a challenge. I should probably have circled around to bleed off speed. I attempted to slow the descent to avoid picking up too much speed, ended up a bit high on approach, and in getting back on a sensible glideslope ended up landing at c. 140 Kts - which proved to be uncontrollable on the runway. Ended up sliding off at the end in a graceful drift! No prizes for that landing, but I think everyone probably walked away :grimacing:

Leg 9: Yerevan (UDYZ), Armenia to Baghdad (ORBI), Iraq

Summary

Leg 9 is one of the longest so far at just short of 500Nm. We are heading South from Armenia to Iraq, crossing a pretty high mountain range (the Zagros Mountains) before reaching the much flatter lands in Iraq itself. So we are cruising at 18,000 feet today to make sure we stay well clear of those. The weather looks generally good, but is a bit misty and some low visibility in Armenia, but we soon climb out of that and enjoy some spectacular views and land at sunset in Iraq.

Leg 10: Baghdad (ORBI), Iraq to Kuwait City (OKBK), Kuwait

Summary

Leg 10 finds us heading South East from Baghdad to Kuwait on the Northern coast of the Persian Gulf. Although this is very flat terrain, air space restrictions seem to mean that if we are to take a pretty direct route, we’ll need to fly above 23,500 feet most of the way. So time to see if the superchargers on this thing will work well enough to get us up to 24,000 feet - the answer? Yes they do. I suspect I could have got another 2,000 feet or so out of her if I’d pushed it harder, but no need - although we did spend a fair amount of time climbing. Once again, some beautiful weather and awesome scenery to behold.

Leg 11: Kuwait City (OKBK), Kuwait to Manama (OBBI), Bahrain

Summary

Leg 11 has us heading South towards Bahrain, following along the Southern coast of the Persian Gulf. Our approach has us circling out over the Gulf before heading back towards the island of Bahrain. The weather today is very good, just a few small clouds about and a little haze. Nice weather for flying and some great views over the desert and oil fields of Saudi Arabia. Well, my landing here left a lot to be desired. It was all looking good as I touched down, but as I applied the brakes the back end started to slide out from under me and I ended up off the runway and on the grass sideways…

Summary

Leg 12 takes us along the Southern shore of the Persian Gulf and then the Gulf of Oman. On our way we fly over Qatar (we’ll be back here soon!) and then close by Dubai before heading into Oman. Great weather again today, with just some whispy clouds about, and a landing in a lovely setting sun in Muscat, Oman. I pretty much nailed this landing though, which after the last effort, was nice!

Leg 14: Abu Dhabi (OMAA), United Arab Emirates to Doha (OTHH), Qatar

Summary

Leg 14 continues our apparent “doubling back” to the West as we head straight back over the Persian Gulf ro Qatar and the capital city of Doha. For fun, I thought we’d try a dawn flight, and the weather was excellent and we got to see a beautiful sunrise. Taking off in the pre dawn darkness and seeing the lights of Muscat was lovely. ATC changed our runway on approach, so a little bit of hasty reprogramming of the GPS routed us to come in from the south (runway 34R) rather than our original plan of 16L. Gave us a nice fly past of Doha airport and surrounds though, looking nice in the early morning sunshine on the coast of the Gulf.

Leg 15: Doha (OTHH), Qatar to Riyadh (OERK), Saudi Arabia

Summary

Leg 15 has us heading West into Saudia Arabia and on to the capital Riyadh. Our departue is from runway 34R, so heading North, then we circle to the East our over the Persian Gulf and around before heading West inland again. The terrain is again very flat desert, although some beautiful colours. A bit hazy weather at take off, but pretty clear skies otherwise. Our landing runway chnaged in flight from 33R to 15L, so we had to make a hasty approach change in the GPS, which went fine. Much better than the landing, which started OK, but turned into a bit of a lopsided wheely - not my finest. Got all the wheels on the ground eventually, but was a bit hairy for a minute or two.

Leg 16: Riyadh (OERK), Saudi Arabia to Amman (OJAI), Jordan

Summary

Leg 16 is taking us Northwest over the deserts of Saudi Arabia to Jordan in the heart of the middle East. Our next few hops will be quite short as we tick off a few small and close together capitals. For this trip, the weather turns out to be pretty mixed - lots of overcast in Riyadh, a mix of clear skies and thick clouds along the way, and then a tricky descent into Amman with almost no visibility. Fortunately for me, the DC-6 will follow ILS landings pretty well. I think I pretty much nailed this landing after a few not so good ones of late.

Leg 17: Amman (OJAI), Jordan to Tel Aviv (LLBG), Israel

Summary

PLOT TWIST! Our DC-6 has been traded in, upgraded, converted into the 21st century and has become the Fenix A320. I’m sorry for the DC-6 fans - the Fenix A320 is just so much more fun to fly. So we will use this for a few legs, then maybe we will switch to the 737, or the MD-80 or even the BAe 146…who knows. It’s our trip, and we make the rules

Today’s leg - after a bit of a long stop over in Jordan, is the very short hop to Israel. Almost too short for an A320 - we barely get up before we are coming down! Interestingly, there is no airport in Jerusalem in Israel - and so we have to go to Tel Aviv, where the major international airport in Israel is - Ben Gurion. It’s a nice early morning trip with some lovely views of the sunrise. And very short!

Interesting site, if you hadn’t already seen it….

Thank you - that is very interesting. I’ve been contemplating learning R at some point - this might just be the thing to do. The code shared here allows 30 cities - I need 227 - you’d like to think that would be easy to fix - maybe just slower to solve!

I wonder how close my excel solution will be to what this might produce!

Leg 18: Tel Aviv (LLBG), Israel to Damascas (OSDI), Syria

Another pretty short leg today from Israel to Syria. Our departure takes us out over the Mediterranean Sea before we circle right around, fly back over the airport and then turn North to Syria. Another beautiful day makes for nice flying!

Leg 19: Damascas (OSDI), Syria to Beirut (OLBA), Lebanon

Summary

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the Round The World trip in various airliners. Apologies for the extended absence - a combination of real life getting in the way and my recording software acting up - the latter seems to have resolved itself somewhat, so we are able to get going again on our epic journey. The timelaspe video still looks a little weird in parts, so apologies for that - outwith my control I’m afraid - fortunately this one is only 40 seconds long!

Today’s leg is very short - just 57 miles over the globe, although a bit longer by the time we follow our routes and waypoints. Nice clear morning in Damascus with barely a cloud in the sky as we head East to the Mediterranean coast and Rafic Hariri airport in Beirut. A bit more cloudy on approach and hazy on landing though.

You are going to have to go back. South Africa has 3 capitals, and you only went to 1 of them…

(Just kidding. But for real, SA does have 3 capitals (Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Cape Town))

Lol - I’ve not got to South Africa yet, so there’s still time to fit them all in!

Leg 20: Beirut (OLBA), Lebanon to Nicosia (LCEN), Cyprus

Summary

Another leg and another airliner - this time the PMDG Boeing 737-800, a plane which I’m slowly getting to grips with and really enjoying!

Another relatively short trip today, across the Med to Cyprus. We’re landing today at LCEN or Ercan Internatinal Airport. This proved more challengng than expected as Navigraph has no airport charts for LCEN - which seems a little odd. That meant I had to figure out how to line up using the VOR at the airport and do a visual manual landing. That bit turned out to work OK - the first landing attempt had to be aborted though as I was way too high - and nearly had a moment trying to do the go around. Definitely more practice needed for that, and I suspect I had some very sick passengers in the back.

Second attempt at the landing was much better, although I started the descent a little late, so it was pretty steep to start with!

  • Currency euro; Turkish lira in the north
