Asobo C208B Grand Caravan w/ floaters engine stalls almost immediately

Hey! I just tried flying the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan (with floaters) for the first time. I actually liked it quite a bit in MSFS2020, so I thought it would be even better in 2024.

But I was wrong! I couldn’t fly a single mile with it…

First of all, the aircraft sways from side to side like a ship when taxiing, even at very low speeds. But that’s still acceptable.

The worst thing is that I couldn’t get the plane off the ground. The engine kept cutting out shortly after start taxiing. Even when I just took off from the taxiway because I thought I was doing something wrong when taxiing to the runway, the engine failed about 15 seconds after takeoff every time and couldn’t be restarted manually or with Ctrl+E. I disabled engine damage etc. in the settings to test it out, and even then the problem still occurs. Even when I meticulously work through the detailed checklists for each phase of the flight, the engine stalls.

At first, I thought it was faulty key bindings on my Hotas, but even when I play with an Xbox controller and disconnect the Hotas, it still happens.

Does anyone else have this problem? I started at pretty much 0 ft AMSL, so it can’t be a fuel problem, and of course there was plenty of fuel available on all flights.

I didn’t have the patience to test it with the version without floaters.

I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

Hi @SpacePhil
I gave that version of the plane a test with just starting on the runway/lake, and didn’t have the engine problems you described.

I did have some rocking while taxiing at KSAR, but it’s a bit rough on parts of the taxiway. I checked it on a lake takeoff, and did get some rocking after I bumped the wind speed up. (plane also starts on the water with the water rudders up…hmmm). But takeoff was normal, as was the climb out and cruise.
Could you check the fuel valve positions (overhead view) as you start your flight and see if something is either turning them off just before you depart, or if they’re moving after you’ve started your climb out? I’m just wondering if there’s a keyboard/mouse/other command cross linked to the fuel valves.

I haven’t looked at the checklists to see if there’s an issue with something that misconfigures your plane. So you might also try just a regular T/O without doing any preflight, etc checklists. Just set up your departure and go fly.
Sounds like either electrical or fuel issues that are either misconfigured, or cross linked to another command on keyboard, etc.
Sorry that’s not much to go on, other than a default takeoff seems to work for me.
Regards

Hello, and thank you very much for your detailed reply!

I was just about to make a video of the problem to post it here. But the error seems to have suddenly disappeared! Even though I didn’t do anything differently than yesterday… It was probably a bug that only affected me and was fixed by restarting.

I can’t explain it any other way.
