At least one day's notice that any new sim update will happen

would be nice. If there is something like that I never find it here or on other forums so where? I prefer to empty my Community folder before them but never know exactly when the next one will be. (I know there is one ‘pending’ and overdue from last week but no more details as to when).

Actually that information is available.
It is all in the development roadmap
Here is a link.

Normally yes, but the link to the development roadmap says there is an update today, yet we know that is not happening. I agree, a 24hr heads up would be nice.

It’s updated though. UK is happening on Feb 2nd according to the link.

Thanks - I did find ‘roadmaps’ but not that one ! So now that its Feb 2nd I can put everything back in my community folder (someone said it would be today, delayed from last wk).

Today was the original date.

Whoa, the UK update is coming today? I thought it got delayed, or is today “delayed”? I haven’t done much flying around the UK, but I’ve been getting more global recently, so maybe I will!

EDIT: Guess I was a little late on this one…

Apparently not - it was at one time the 20th, then delayed I thought until today but now they say 2nd of Feb. (I still don’t know if any OTA update of smaller issues will suddenly happen before that (hence my point about being able to empty community folder beforehand).

How far back do you have to go for the release to be announced for Jan 20th? :stuck_out_tongue:

This is the schedule on Dec 3rd:

Don’t get confused, update doesn’t always mean sim update.
It means a status update, just a discussion on the progress, or expected progress, of the sim

Just get an addon’s manager (I use this one), it makes it so I don’t store ANYTHING in my community folder. Well, except for my Navigraph data, which I could probably move, and my permanent settings folder for the GNS530 mod, both of which get backed up daily anyway. I actually had to restore the GNS530 one from a backup over the weekend because I did a reinstall and accidentally deleted it. All my addon’s too, even though they weren’t actually stored in Community, but they were in the FS directory tree, which they didn’t have to be. And still don’t, I should move them elsewhere in case I have to do it again.)

EDIT: I got distracted and forgot to finish my point. I do that.

Anyway, having an addon’s manager makes emptying your community folder as easy as checking a few boxes, AND protects all your files from deletion because they don’t actually live in Community. So there’s nothing to worry about with unannounced updates. I’m not saying a head’s up wouldn’t be nice, it would, but this at least solves that particular problem if they don’t give us one.

I can’t support this idea enough. An addon manager is really important, especially now as we’re starting to see more enhancements out there. I use the same one KevyKevTPA linked. No worries about moving addons around, no worries about surprise updates. I use the Description field to enter what the package is because sometimes it’s hard to decrypt some of those subdirectory names.

Well its no problem for me to move all in Community into an ‘Oddfiles’ folder I keep in C: for that very reason - takes a few mouse clicks. The whole point is when to do it - as in they let us know what day the sim will update. Too late to do it if we start the sim and it then finds an update.
I don’t keep much in there anyway - some scenery enhancements that I hope will soon not be needed, a very few extra aircraft - that’s it.

I’d still recommend using an addon manager, because at least that way, nothing actually lives in Community, and thus can’t be damaged by anything MSFS might do. And like I said, it makes it super easy to just turn everything off in the event that you have a problem. It’s not uncommon at all for addons to require patches themselves to make them compatible with new MSFS updates, but that happens pretty quickly with most addon makers.

Sometimes these freeware makers amaze me, as they’re faster and much more communicative than most payware companies.

As a solution to this issue I would suggest that the Sim scans for updates, as at present, but when an update is found two options are offered:

  1. Continue to update the Sim immediately.
  2. Update the Sim when it is next started.

Option 2 would allow users to complete a flight if required before updating, or to immediately close the Sim and remove any community content before restarting and updating.

I love this idea.

The user should be given the chance to choose whether they are ready to update or not. Just like updating Windows or any software we regularly operate.

It would be nice if the World Hub data update was not mandatory as it often creates errors with ILS and LOC etc.

Yep, many of us dont use the default airports, so its just more unnecessary bloatware and more to download with no use… i dont care about airports that do not have a high quality scenery, mostly not even Freeware fits my personal standards. So why force me to download/install it?

But i think we should post this to a more relevant topic, the title doesnt match what we talk about @Batterby76
