ATC: Good-BYE! (?)

OK…

Is it me or is the new “Good-BYE!!” really off-sounding? It just sounds so weird and out of place. Plus now it’s used by anything transmitting anything so it’s “Good-BYE!!” “Good-BYE!!” “Good-BYE!!”

I don’t know why but it’s like nails on a chalkboard :man_shrugging:

100% agree. It does not sound natural, or friendly, I turn ATC voices way down now largely because of this. Good-day sound much better - but even then over used, instead of every time, a bit of random variety would go a long way to improve it.

Hi,

Was brought up in beta and marked as “Fixed on live”

Thanks

QC

Is ‘Good bye’ commonly used by ATC these days? My recollection from many years ago flying it was not—not sure though.

I have only heard it once in about 2500h in the western US. A female controller who was easily recognized by her very sultry voice and her always friendly yet professional manner, broke protocol on a quiet Sunday evening when she announced that she would not be on frequency anymore. That exchange ended with well wishes and GoodBye.
Other than that it was usually, nothing at all, good day or night or so long.

it is way overdone - might hear that once or twice a week on ATC live KSAN when the tower hands off departing flights to So Cal TRACON - usually either ‘good evening’ or ‘good day’ - Good Bye is just a little too…final.. as it were

Agreed. Even more so on the initial call up i.e. “Delta 316 checking in at …”, “Navajo 3521S with you at…”, “Citation 61B leveling flight level xxx”, etc. etc.

Yes, it is. Prefer the much more typical “good day” (or night).

I do find it a bit surprising that, with all the unresolved problems in the ATC, Asobo decided to ignore those, and make a change for the worse for a problem which didn’t exist and no-one had complained about.

Works a treat to remove most of the superfluous waffle (along with “GOOD-BYE”) from ATC. Not everything, but it’s better than without in my view. Working ok so far for me after SU14 too.

I’ve been looking high and low in the voting system for anything that shows that adding “Good-BYE!!” is a high priority as opposed to ATC consistently dropping out. What’s the point of a voting system that only reflects a single digit percent of the entire sim sales? And then what’s the point if things like ATC dropout “votes” are ignored and “Good-BYE!!” becomes the priority with no “votes”. I know… one is easier.

Why hasn’t anyone done this yet?

Just my dodgy hearing, but I keep hearing it as “Good Luck”. Not sure why they felt a pressing urge to change it from what it was.

What drives me even more nuts is when people say “with you”…like where else are you? You’re on frequency so of course you’re with the controller. I hear it occasionally when flying in Michigan but thankfully most people have avoided that habit. I tell all of my flight students to not use that even if they ever hear it :joy:.

Anyways, goodbye is never used here in Michigan at least. We say “good day” “cyaaaa” (local controllers will often exaggerate this one for fun but it’s a pilot thing), “goodnight” “thanks for the traffic”.

I’ve got voices turned off and just use subtitles for ATC, can’t say I’ve noticed them saying good bye?

I didn’t like them telling me "Radar Contact, continue to [whatever] so I cut the “continue” part off. I didn’t think it would be that much different, but it’s actually much quicker (and you know how many times you have to listen to it, so yeah, it does make a difference).

And yeah, I got rid of “Good day”, and “Goodbye” as well.

When Asobo inserted ‘Good bye’ into their ATC dialog it makes me wonder if, a) Asobo programmers have no aviation advisors they listen to, and b) does no one at Asobo read this forum? All I ever saw was one brief post saying Asobo should use Goodbye, with several of us then responding saying Goodbye was seldom if ever used by RL ATC. So what does Asobo do? Mind boggling…

Hahaha so true, but i always think it’s saying that the sim was a good buy.

With you was used frequently in SoCal and occasionally controllers even asked if N123xyz was with them. In certain congested frequencies that was shorter than all the other forms of making yourself noticed on a new frequency after a handoff from another controller.

On the East Coast as well.
