Just now it happened again after no problems for quite a long time. I am sure too it is 100% an Asobo problem. That they did not fix it until today is just a big shame.
Iâve been sitting at Tampa testing AIGround and noticed that after about fifteen minutes, the ATC just drops out completely, meaning that I hear no communication between ATC and the planes (but all other sounds are good). I go back to the main screen and restart the flight and everything comes back, but this has happened several times today.
I canât say that Iâve had exactly the same problem in the past because I donât usually sit at the airport before taking off. But like a lot of others, I have had the problem where my pilot characterâs voice or the ATC voice becomes silent in flight.
It is a problem with their servers, or it is within the code ⊠or both. The problem is that Asobo did not fix it until today for round about 3 years or even more. This is really an impudence!
Has it been fixed? On the SU14 beta perhaps?
Edit - Ah, seems there now might be a problem with Azure.
It is here from the start and I guess Asobo will never fix it.
I think I have found the solution for the unfortunate failure of the ATC sounds.
In computer programs, certain events or parts thereof are often called/searched at a specific location. Sometimes after updates such a location is moved to another place or directory. Or parts are given a slightly different name, which means that not everything works properly anymore. To make everything work properly again, you can reset some settings. Often followed by restarting the program.
For the ATC in FS2020 I found the following. It works for me anyway. So I would try it. Following the steps below, I have now flown several times, both VFR and IFR, and have been able to hear all the sounds of the ATC contacts from start to finish at the gate.
Here are the steps to take.
- if you are in FS2020, go to OPTIONS
- Go to GENERAL OPTIONS
- Click on MISC
- Click on LANGUAGE
- Change (in my case) EN-US into another language (in my case NL-NL)
- Click APPLY AND SAVE (bottom of screen)
- A screen message will appear: âLanguage will only be applied after restarting the gameâ.
- Click OK
- Click on ESC GO BACK (bottom left of screen)
- Click on ESC GO BACK (bottom left of screen)
- Click on ESC QUIT TO DEKTOP (bottom left of screen)
12 Click on YES in the menu. Then FS2020 will be closed
13. Start FS2020
14. Go to OPTIONS again
15. Follow the above points from 2 to 12 again. Return the language settings to the desired language and follow all the above points up to and including closing FS2020.
Then start FS2020. After that everything is back in the desired language and for me the ATC sounds worked as they should.
I hope it works for all of you and look forward to hearing about your results.
Like others, Iâve been having this problem intermittently for a long time, and a solution I found on the âbig threadâ thatâs been out there forever is to switch to the 2nd com and set it to the same frequency. That works for me most of the time.
If that doesnât work, Iâve found that just exiting MSFS and restarting it usually works, but of course nobody wants to have to do that (the ânuclearâ option haha).
Me too, usually works although ATC has been behaving for a bit now.
That is what works for me and when I pointed that out some folks got a little annoyed that I would suggest such a dumb solution that did not always work, which I had pointed out as well ![]()

So, yes that solution does work for me and it is much quicker than the nuclear option.
That somehow does not make much sense to me if it only happens on some flights. Meaning I do one local flight and the return to the main screen, so that it gets logged properly, and then on a second local flight there is no ATC. Even with my workaround that sometimes happens.
So you finish the flight NORDO and then again exit back to the main menu.
In a third flight ATC sounds may be back again, all without shutting fully down or rebooting or anything else.
Does that whole language back and forth fix it for good?? Or do you have to do this again and again?
This completely solved it for me. (ATC sound stopped, all other sounds are still ok? - #26 by PilotHans1377) I still havenât experienced any more ATC dropouts and I receive orders from ATC all the way to the gate. During the flight I also receive assignments regarding altitude such as ascent and descent, and when taxiing I receive assignments about traffic on the taxiways. Everything works properly for me.
I canât imagine this solution wonât work for others. I got this idea from a tip from Zendesk in the past when photogrammetry suddenly stopped working for me in fs2020. The solution was to follow the same steps as above to turn things off and then on again, after which I had normal photogrammetry again.
(This is a duplicate of my post on the bug-logged thread for this ATC sound issue)
I hope it does work for others. Today I changed the language to ES, saved, quit to the desktop, restarted, changed the language back to EU, saved, quit to the desktop, restarted, and flew a few flights.
All was well as it has been mostly for the last few weeks until I decided to test your recommendation by listening to 2 coms at once, ground and tower at KSFO. After a few minutes, the audio stopped in one of the comms. This is the same issue I reported here on Zendesk over 2 years ago. Not stated in the following post, for over 2 years I have also been losing audio and/or text when I am just using one comm at a time, being careful to tune the other comm to ânot usedâ.
While client cleanup may help, if Asobo cannot fix this issue with Azure, Asobo needs at least to provide a way to restore lost audio and/or text while flying, without requiring users to restart MSFS every time audio and/or text is lost.
I donât know if this is an answer to my solution. But I never listen to 2 coms at the same time and it is absolutely not my recommendation to do so.
I found this solution ( ATC sound stopped, all other sounds are still ok? - #26 by PilotHans1377) and wanted to share it with others.
I will not respond to this any further.
I m not even sure this is an Asobo problem, but perhaps a lack of memory problem. I have fixed it by unplugging the XBox for a while before I want to start, this gets rid of all residual current and should clear the memory. I have never had the problem since I have been doing this.
Listening to two com frequencies is actually quite common in real flying, although not a recommended practice.
If you are flying along on a longer cross country flight, the Wx may have changed quite a bit at your destination, from the forecast you had during the flight briefing. So as you come into range of the destination ATIS or AWOS you tune that frequency in to update your picture of the situation and plan your arrival. On occasion you may even abort and land at an alternate without first flying to the primary destination. I use that in the sim as well.
And at least in my active flying days, we typically had the COM2 radio tuned to the guard frequency, in case a fellow pilot might use it under distress or an ELT could be heard.
Yes thatâs right!
But my point was that I had not said that myself as a solution for the loss of the ATC sound in the sim.
All sounds that ATC produces in the sim are âtext to speechâ and depend on factors whether those texts are activated or not and whether you hear them or not. If you turn on subtitles you will see that the texts are there. However, you do not hear the sound itself because the SIM cannot find the right part in the sound package on your PC.
Something has gone wrong somewhere in your system, for example by not fully downloading all the small parts of an update due to perhaps a small hiccup in the process. Or due to a small computer glitch while closing the program, resulting in the loss of a component.
In the event of an internal glitch when shutting down your PC, programs may sometimes have to be completely reinstalled. Not fun, but it is reality. It is not due to the program but may be due to your PC.
By following the steps I indicated, things were organized again and then continued to work as usual.
