I’m at 3,000 and 3 mins from the destination. Then all of a sudden I get ATC asking me to climb 17,000. Huh?!
Yeap… I tend to ignore these unreasonable requests. Just continue the approach.
Nothing unusual there with MSFS ATC. They’ll try to get you to do all kinds of stupid things.
My most recent incident of ATC stupidity was yesterday. I was doing an IFR flight with the C172 Classic. Cruise altitude was 9000 ft. There was some weather ahead, so I asked for 7000 to fly under it, which I got. I was then instructed to climb to FL240 when 15NM from my destination. Had to cancel out my IFR and finish off my flight VFR instead.
Gotta love it!
Anyone know of a 3rd party ATC? I’m aware or PRO/ATC which I can’t currently get to run at all with MSFS though I believe they’re working on a beta. Pilot2ATC I like but I don’t like having to actually verbally talking to ATC and can’t figure out how to use it without voice.
Thanks
I doubt you would hit FL240 even on the reciprocal heading in a 172.
I can’t stand ATC when on the airfield I thought aircraft had right of way, but ATC keeps stopping me for Tankers and vans ? Found a kind of cure if the vehicle is in your way I just bring my aircraft to a stop and wait, after 1 to 2 minutes the vehicle gives up and reverses does a U turn and buzzes off. Comical but it works.
Yeapp… just turn off the ground airport vehicles in your traffic settings… Or just ignore ATC whenever they make unreasonable requests.
I’m thinking about trying Pilot2ATC but without speaking (small apartment, need to be quiet at nights when I usually fly). Is it not possible to only use text?
I’m seriously considering Vatsim. But I’m both a little intimidated by it, and without weather working reliably, it could be an issue.
ATC G BBEV report your position
Me G BBEV is Northbound in the Low Level just crossing over the M62 motorway
ATC G EV no you are not, you are South of the Thelwall
Me G EV I know the difference between the M62 and the Thelwall Bridge and I am just past the M62 Northbound and about to exit the Low Level.
ATC G EV orbit right
Me G EV orbitting right above Wigan Flash.
ATC G EV contact Warton on xxx.xx
Me G EV contacting Warton on xxx.xx, have a good day now
So even the Pro’s make a complete hash of it from time to time
The ATC is an enhancement of FSXs and that’s always been a little ropey. Plans are in order to improve it, but still …
Why not look at VATSIM or IVAO ? It’s a little unnerving (okay, it’s dead scary) talking to a real person, but it’s much easier after a couple of flights.
Two rules ; don’t start up either on the runway, and when you want to try it out pick somewhere quiet (occasionally there are beginner sessions), not Heathrow on a weekend evening. In quieter places the ATC has more time to assist you with problems.
They show up in built ATC for what it is. It’s not that it’s terrible or anything, the other sims aren’t any better, but it just doesn’t have the same feel about it.
A good place to connect and just look is the maintenance area just south of the Runways at Gatwick. Great view, usually traffic, and listen in.
Pilot2ATC has a Co-Pilot option that will allow you to “speak” requests for you. I use it when Vatsim is quiet.
No, the weather is fine, just set your weather to whatever you want. I’d go have a listen to VATSIM - get an account (free) set up VPilot (fairly easy), put a Cessna 152 on a maintenance pad in an active airport and just listen to the comms and watch the aircraft.
Then find somewhere quiet, where the ATC aren’t trying to handle 37 flights at once, sign up for a flight, mark yourself as ‘beginner’ and have a go. Do VFR first, it’s easier, you don’t have to worry about the plane so much.
Put it this way. You can’t make a bigger mess of it than I did first time out.
Most people on VATSIM/IVAO are nice and helpful, and they all know how nerve racking it is the first time.
It has a drop down list where you can select the text to say so no speaking required.
Downside is it will still require some kind of microphone connected even if not used.
Look on YouTube,
When I’m flying out of Rocky Mountain Municipal (Jeffco) I always end up talking to ATC in Detroit. Ground contacts and ATIS are always with Jeffco.
Thanks Neo4316 i have had to do that, but really that is cheating I like reality flying, it’s up to Microsoft to sort it out don’t they know the rule aircraft have right of way.
It’s done that to me and I was flying the 172 how the hell do you get a 172 to 17,000
Well is it real that the ground vehicles are driving in the middle of the taxiway and the ATC is stopping you for the tankers and ground vehicle? Turning it off is to give you more realism. At least for now. It’s an option anyway.
From what I’m seeing, these issues occur only on AI-generated airports. Not custom handcrafted ones. Where you could have a separate ground vehicle and taxiway paths. Which means, either the AI can’t differentiate between ground vehicle path and taxiway paths. Or it could be the other way around, where the taxiway path and the ground vehicle path is blended together, so both vehicles travel on them.
I can’t see how Microsoft would be able to sort out the issue, other than going into every single airport and fixing the taxiway and ground vehicle path one by one. The only alternative is to improve the AI itself, which falls in the blackshark AI. And better AI requires better machine learning and let them improve the intelligence to differentiate between the two.
