Oil Rig Operations – Pilot Achievement Process (MSFS2024)
A realistic, role‑based mission flow for your pilots
1) Offshore Navigation & Rig Identification
Pilots must:
- Depart from the mainland heliport/airport
- Navigate visually or via GPS to the correct offshore platform
- Positively identify the correct rig (there are often multiple rigs in a field)
- Perform a 360° inspection orbit at safe altitude (500–700 ft AGL)
Achievement requirement:
Correct rig identified + full inspection orbit completed
2) Rig Approach Procedure
Pilots must:
- Descend to the rig’s approach altitude (typically 300–500 ft)
- Fly the published or implied approach sector (rigs have a “safe approach arc” to avoid cranes, flares, and exhaust stacks)
- Maintain stable speed and heading
- Avoid overflying the flare boom
Achievement requirement:
Stable approach flown through the safe sector
3) Hover Check & Windsock Assessment
Pilots must:
- Stop in a stable hover off the deck
- Check windsock direction
- Adjust approach to land into the wind
- Confirm deck is clear (in MSFS this is visual only)
Achievement requirement:
10‑second stable hover + wind‑corrected alignment
4) Precision Landing on the Helideck
Pilots must:
- Touch down on the marked “H”
- Maintain heading into the wind
- Avoid sliding or drifting
- Keep skids fully inside the landing circle
Achievement requirement:
Clean, centered landing on the helideck
5) Engine Management / Simulated Offload
Real offshore ops involve shutdown, passenger exchange, or cargo transfer. In MSFS2024, you can simulate this by requiring:
Pilots must:
- Reduce to idle
- Simulate offload (30–60 seconds)
- Maintain rotor control
- Avoid deck drift
Achievement requirement:
30–60 sec stable idle hold on deck
6) Rig Departure Procedure
Pilots must:
- Lift vertically to 50–100 ft
- Transition forward into the departure sector (opposite the approach arc)
- Climb to safe altitude
- Avoid overflying the rig superstructure
Achievement requirement:
Clean vertical lift + safe departure arc
