:bullseye: Event Overview

A gas‑line rupture has ignited multiple structures near Wentworth Falls, triggering a major emergency response. Two helicopter teams deploy from Sydney’s western bases to evacuate the injured and fight the advancing fire front.

This event blends precision HEMS operations with aerial fire suppression, designed for coordinated group flying without role overlap.

Multiplayer Fire Fighting: In this event we will use FS Fire, an addon that allows fires to be spawned randomly, at specific points or real world fire events. In particular, it allows pilots to work as a team in putting out fires and can see drops from other pilots.

It is available from the Marketplace in MSFS2024 or via SimMarket.

Aerial Fire‑Fighting Bucket Procedure – MSFS 2024

The following steps cover bucket pickup, transport, drop technique, and safety using helicopters such as the Bell 412, UH‑1H, or H125 bucket variant.

1

Prepare the Aircraft for Bucket Ops

Start Here

Ensures the helicopter and bucket system are ready before approaching the water source.

  • Confirm the bucket is attached in the aircraft’s loadout.
  • Check weight and balance; bucket adds drag and mass.
  • Set power margins for hover operations.
  • Brief crew on drop direction and escape route.

2

Approach the Water Source

A stable, low‑speed approach prevents bucket swing and keeps the aircraft controllable.

  • Descend to 200–300 ft AGL on final.
  • Reduce speed to 20–30 knots.
  • Keep the bucket behind and centered — avoid lateral swing.
  • Maintain a shallow approach to avoid vortex ring state.

3

Hover and Fill the Bucket

Critical Step

The bucket must be fully submerged and stable to take on water.

  • Enter a steady hover over the water.
  • Lower collective gently until the bucket is fully submerged.
  • Hold hover for 3–5 seconds while the bucket fills.
  • Watch for yaw drift caused by rotor wash over water.
  • Slowly climb vertically to avoid dragging the bucket.

4

Transit to the Fire Zone

Transport the filled bucket safely without inducing swing.

  • Maintain 60–80 knots depending on aircraft type.
  • Avoid abrupt pitch or roll inputs.
  • Keep altitude around 500–800 ft AGL for terrain clearance.
  • Monitor torque — bucket weight increases power demand.

5

Set Up the Drop Run

Recommended

A stable, aligned run ensures the water lands on the target area.

  • Approach the fire into the wind when possible.
  • Descend to 150–300 ft AGL depending on smoke.
  • Line up with the long axis of the fire.
  • Maintain 40–60 knots for a controlled drop.
  • Confirm FS Fire visual effects are active.

6

Release the Water

Timing and stability determine the effectiveness of the drop.

  • Press the aircraft’s Drop/Release control.
  • Keep the helicopter steady during release.
  • Expect a slight nose‑up pitch as weight is shed.
  • Continue forward for 2–3 seconds before climbing away.

7

Exit and Reset for Next Cycle

A clean exit keeps airspace safe for other aircraft.

  • Climb to 500 ft AGL on exit heading.
  • Clear the fire zone before turning.
  • Communicate intentions to other pilots.
  • Return to the lake for the next fill cycle.
