Aussie Group Flights Team: TBM 850 Radio Navigation Workshop

In this event, one of our family of members - Bart, has kindly offered to host a session on the process of using Radio Navigation on the recently released TBM 850 from Blacksquare.

It would be possible to follow along with the TBM930 using the G3000 suite but primarily the event is about coming to terms with Radio Navigation using the TBM 850.

Charts to support the event will be available on Discord: Aussie Group Flights Team - On-line Flying

Details to follow. Hope you can join us.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS INFORMATION IS FOR FLIGHT SIMULATION USE ONLY.

Regards, Paul

ATTENTION Aussie Flight Group Participants …

Group Flight: 2023-10-26T20:00:00Z

PLEASE DO NOT SPAWN ON THE RUNWAY. ENSURE YOU SELECT THE STARTING POSITION ON THE RAMP.

Route: Fitzgerald Mun(KFZG) Southwest Georgia Rgnl(KABY) Spence(KMUL) Cairo-Grady Co(70J) North American Farms(56FD) Cairns AAF(KOZR) Brewton Mun(12J).

In addition to this flight description please refer to some homemade charts which should be clearer. I
find this an excellent way to practice old school radio navigation and maintaining situation awareness.

Note the charts are not to scale in distance but correct angles are maintained. Unfortunately RNAV is not present in Asobo TBM but obviously all other navigaƟon methods are.

To give ourselves time to prepare radios, legs preceding RNAV navigation legs will end on full stop – we may
re-think it during the flight.

Note autopilot will not use RNAV as a navigation source – MSFS limitation. Autopilot has to be used in
HDG mode to manually stay on course. Don’t forget to switch HSI source to RNAV.

+ From KFZG to KABY use RNAV tracking radial 265° to point 147°/ 8.8nm from PZD 116.10. FULL
STOP landing at KABY.

+ From KBAY to KMUL either use RNAV or traditional VOR navigation. KMUL is 31nm from OTK
(114.80) radial 316° (for RNAV) or 31nm at radial 043° to OTK for “traditional” VOR navigation.
TOUCH & GO at KMUL.

+ From KMUL to 70J. Fly heading 243° and turn towards NDB CYR 338.0Mz when signal is received.
CYR range is 25nm so give it time before NDB needle becomes alive. FULL STOP landing at 70J.

+ From 70J to 56FD. Fly RNAV tracking at 281° radial to waypoint 134° / 27nm from RRS (111.60).
Note RNAV relies on VOR signal and cannot guide if VOR signal is not received. RRS range is only
40nm so do not expect the HSI to come alive until some distance along the leg. TOUCH & GO at 56FD.

+ From 56FD to KORZ. Fly direct. 109.70 localiser frequency. ILS approach RWY 06. FULL STOP landing at KORZ.

+ Fly from KOZR to 12J. Use RNAV to fly directly to a waypoint 304° / 24nm from CEW (115.90).
CEW range is 250nm so RNAV should be working all the way from take-off. FULL STOP landing at 12J.

Extra challenge: For total reliance on radio navigation I have airport POI’s off and no GPS, VFR map or Little NavMap.

Altitude: 5,500’.

IMPORTANT: In the interest of keeping it REAL, please refrain from selecting inappropriate aircraft, like airliners. Unless it is appropriate for the event. This only detracts from the immersion of the flight.

Seeing Aircraft Correctly: You need to do two things to ensure you can see the other pilots in the event and see them in the aircraft they selected.

Select the same server: To do this, proceed as follows:

From the Welcome Screen, click on your Username (top right)
From the list of servers, under Servers, select South East Asia.

Turn off Generic Planes: To do this, proceed as follows:

From the Welcome Screen, click on OPTIONS
Click on GENERAL
With TRAFFIC selected, scroll down to the last option and set USE GENERIC PLANE MODELS to OFF

Turning off Crash/Damage:

Select Options/Assistance
Expand Failure & Damage
Disable Crash Damage
Disable Aircraft Stress Damage
Disable Engine Stress Damage
Accept the changes

Voice Room: My personal Discord server is used for voice comms. If you haven’t already joined my server, click on the below link to request access. I will set you up as a Member so you can access the server. Ensure you do this prior to the flight, as latecomers will need to wait for the next event.

Note: this link is only valid for 7 days from posting.

Weather/Time: We will set the time to 8am. This will allow us to fly in daylight and choose REAL weather so that the winds are correct.

From the World Map view, click on Flight Conditions (upper right of screen)
Click on All Players, Live Traffic, Custom
Under Weather and Time, select Live Weather and move the time slide bar to show 8:00am.
Click Close and Fly from the World Map view.

We can start departing from 20:00z. There will be no need for official radio calls. Let’s just have some fun taking in the scenery and the social aspects of the event.

Litttle NavMap: TBM_RadioNav_Flight.lnmpln (2.3 KB)

MSFS: TBM_RadioNav_Flight.pln (2.9 KB)

All GPS functions can be removed by configuring the cockpit with radio stacks only:

Been playing with the TBM 850 a bit… I wouldn’t be surprised to see the pack get separated very quickly  !
