Average FPS 5-10 (RAM usage 90+%)

Hi there,

For the past few weeks I’ve been getting an average of 5-10 fps on the ground. I have an RTX 3060Ti, Ryzen 7 5800X and 16 GB of RAM. My GPU is running at 40-50% capacity when playing, my CPU is at 5-10% capacity, but my RAM is always at 90+% of it’s capacity. Will buying more RAM improve my FPS or could there be a different reason for my low FPS? I’ve heard that RAM doesn’t improve FPS that much.

I’ve only been having this issue for a few weeks now and it is really annoying me, I can’t even take off or land properly anymore.

I have tried lowering my graphics, but I really see no difference at all.

Here is a screenshot of the computer’s performance while cruising at 34 000 ft:

What sort of planes are you flying, and where are you flying to/from?

I’m flying the Fenix A320. I fly from (and to) payware airports all around the world, mostly in Europe. The payware airports might add to the lag, of course, but I don’t think it’s normal to be running the sim at 10 fps.

No, absolutely not. I also have an RTX3060 (laptop version) which is why I noticed your post. But I fly GA only and typically get between 30 and 50 FPS, but I get high GPU usage - sometimes 100% - and low CPU although that varies according to what tool is measuring it. Is your network all OK? This speed test is a good one.

I’m not from the UK, but this is what I got:

Network is reasonable, have you tried temporarily renaming the community folder and running the sim like that, to eliminate add-ons?

I’ll have to try that, but I’ll leave the A320 in there so that I know if maybe the aircraft causes lag.

I’ve landed in Nice now, and here is a picture of my PC’s performance on the ground. This game is unplayable:

Open Task Manager with <Ctrl+Shift+Esc>

Click on ‘Details’ tab
Click on ‘Memory’ column to sort and view which processes are using system RAM.

Hello
I understand your frustration…
But don’t look for an easy culprit…
I have already seen it other times and it is not MSFS 2020.
It could be many other things…
Now you catch me busy but I’m going to try to help you as I have already done with more people and teams worse than yours and they are enjoying MSFS 2020 to the fullest.
We will try to make you enjoy it too.

Ever since the Dunes update, graphics in VR have been horrible. Had to drop settings from Ultra to high or medium… Prior to this update, everything was great. Even reloaded the game, no change.

OP download the free version of Malwarebytes. Install it and run it. It will tell you if there is any malware/spyware on your system. It’s just something else to check.

The reason things are slow is because your RAM is basically full and Windows will be swapping stuff out like crazy, which slows down every memory access and blocks I/O to the disk. Everything will be slow in this situation.

Do what @BegottenPoet228 suggests, and see what is using the RAM. If it’s all MSFS (and I’ve seen it get that big on my machine occasionally) then upgrading your RAM to 32GB+ is the likely solution. If it’s something else, then you need to either stop using whatever it is while flying MSFS, tune / tweak it to use less RAM, or again, buy more RAM.

It seems unlikely that it’s the 16GB ram that’s the problem - that’s what I have and I’ve not seen this kind of problem. Adding more memory might ‘fix’ it but there would still be an underlying problem that needs to be fixed for good.

As others have mentioned, you need to find out what is using RAM memory. When RAM gets between 60-75% utilization, Windows starts moving memory around to make room for other programs to run. Windows overhead starts slowing things down. Above 75-80%, the Windows overhead to manage memory becomes signicant slowing everything down to the point where MSFS and other programs aren’t useable.

You mentioned this started a few weeks ago. Do you remember doing anything on your system a few weeks ago? Anything added, removed, update, changed? Any new programs installed? This might help you to find the source of the problem.

I did start buying a lot of payware airports, so that might be a cause…? Other than that I haven’t really done anything odd. I will look for malware later today, hopefully I’m all good. I don’t remember ever visiting sketchy websites, so I’m pretty certain that’s not the reason (I’ll still check, of course). I’ll also look into what is using up all of my RAM, I will update y’all in about 5 hours.

That’s the very thing that some console developers are struggling with, getting their planes to work in such a limited budget. I wouldn’t rule it out.

Here is my RAM usage:

I’ve installed Malwarebytes and did the scan, quarantined 18 files.

Here is the performance now:

Someone is surely going to say to turn off Volanta, so here you go, performance without Volanta:

Those numbers clearly don’t add up. What do task manager’s RAM details look like with and without FS running?

For example:
