Average FPS 5-10 (RAM usage 90+%)

t’s most probably cache issue caused by payware addons.

Have you tried to empty rolling cache from the in-game settings? If that doesn’t help try to delete all .dat-files in scenery indexes folder. It’s safe to delete these files, they will build up after launching the game again.

This is my normal procedure always after installing third-party airports.

Depending on your installation this folder is located somewhere here: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\SceneryIndexes

Explained here quite well: https://emeraldscenerydesign.com/support/troubleshooting/

That list isn’t everything though.

I’m sure it will all add up. Remember we are talking about 90-95% of only 16gb, so 14 ish total.

It’s already nearly 12 in that section of screenshot that has been posted but there will be a lot more that all add up.

@UNEEP basically the only way is to massively reduce the settings in the sim that mainly require RAM. Heavy planes, large scenery and long LOD distances. All the other settings have an incremental impact too so just try lowering it all. Or upgrade to 32gb!

Just realised the list in task manger doesn’t account for how much Windows is using. That’s why I think it would be useful to see how much is in use without FS running, to get a baseline for the system.

The only things running are opera, task manager and Logitech G Hub in the background.

This.

I would guess that OP has a 2 x 8GB RAM config.
Change that to a 2 x 16GB config. You can buy a 32GB kit of good RAM for around $100. I don’t recommend just adding two more 8GB modules. The word on the street is that 2 x 16GB is better than 4 x 8GB. I have 4 x 16GB and my system runs great, but as Baracus will tell you, I’m an anomaly…

  • It’s generally a good idea to buy RAM that is on the motherboard QVL (Qualified Vendor List.)

  • Optimal RAM config for your AMD motherboard is two dual-rank DDR4-3600 modules in the correct slots as specified in the motherboard manual. The lower the CL (also called CAS) number the better. My RAM is DDR4-3600/CL14. I would get CL16 at a minimum. You could get faster RAM (like DDR-4000) but you risk saturating your memory controller. 3600MHz is reported to be the ‘sweet spot’ for AMD.

I’ve cleared it now, I’ll start MSFS again to see if anything improves. I’ve actually ordered 64GB of RAM a few weeks ago, waiting for it patiently to arrive.

Right. Well, I’ve ordered a 2x32GB DDR4 3200MHz, I didn’t know if my PC supports 3600MHz so I didn’t want to risk it.

I ordered 2x32GB, I’ll throw out my 2x16GB (or give it away).

That should be fine. I bookmarked this thread. I hope that solves your problem.

Is there a big difference between a 3200MHz and a 3600MHz?

Here’s a snippet from Passmark’s RAM benchmarks, comparing 3200 and 3600 using a fairly common choice.

Latency (lower is better)
3600 is 2.5% better.

Read speed (higher is better)
3600 is 11% better.

Write speed (higher is better)
3600 is 14% better.

Threaded memory (higher is better)
3600 is 22% better.

Alright. Thanks for the info! Let’s see if the RAM will help. I do hope so.

It should do based on your test results.

I know others will disagree but I personally feel that 32GB is the minimum for a gaming PC. In fact I’ll go further and say that 32GB is really the minimum spec I’d consider for a desktop PC full stop. Running just MSFS with 16GB? Sure, you can do well. But start running lots of external add-ons and complex payware? You end up where the OP is.

Let us know how you get on post-upgrade.

I have just found PC-Builds and installed.
Ryzen 9 5900x
RX 6700x
32Gb
3440 x 1440 144hz

At the moment FS runs really well, no problems, and looks really great;
With PC-Build i tried a Beechcraft Baron G58 flying out of Heathrow. Average FPS 30/35 and GPU bottleneck around 17%
All looked really good
Then I flew out of Deols France, near where I live which is a huge ex US base with not many buildings. Just country around. FPS 55/60 and GPU bottleneck 11%

Both times memory is around 50% usage

PC-Build seems a good free tool to see what is going on and possibly where to look for problems.

Alright, my RAM has finally arrived. The improvement is not huge, but the difference is clear.
I spawned in at EHAM (Amsterdam Schiphol) with all of my usual apps running in the background. I found that FSLTL makes the most difference in performance. I have about 15 fps when turning my camera without it, maybe 5 fps when FSLTL is running (I’ve set my max aircraft limit to 30%). So I guess that you have to have a NASA PC to run MSFS at high-end settings (not even ultra) with FSLTL smoothly.

Here is the performace of my PC now (note that when making these screenshots I’m not turning my camera, so the performace is usually significantly worse):
Screenshot 2024-04-09 170054
Screenshot 2024-04-09 170108

For what it is worth. The screenshot of the application (post 18) memory use totals to: 8,087,755 K

I turned off all apps on my Win11 box and had RAM usage of 4.1 GB.

Loaded the Asobo Cessna 152 onto the end of the runway at Heathrow EGLL and then shut it down (Alt+F4). Here is the change in memory usage:

I reckon that is going from just under 16 GB to 5.2 GB.

Just for the record my Traffic settings were:

So I am at a loss as to why you are sill getting such poor performance. My un-educated suggestions would be:

  • Check what you get with the Asobo Cessna 152.
  • As someone earlier said. Think about what changed when the performanced changed.
  • Start benchmarking your hardware to make sure it is performing as you expect.

Good luck, I know how sole destorying trying to solve these sorts of problems are until you find a solution. sPK

Edit: My Spec:
Platform: Steam
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
RAM: 32 GB 6000 MHz – Now I’m really glad I got 32
GPU: RTX 4070 Super 12 GB VRAM

Graphics set up:
Screen Resolution: 1920x1080

At Heathrow I was getting 67-69 sitting at the end of the runway. In my normal GA flying I get more than 100 fps – (To be honest I don’t pay it much heed normally).

I definitely already had that set correctly. Just set the graphics to the ones above. I doubt it’ll help, but I’ll be testing it now.

I’m guessing that it COULD be the GPU. I’ve set my graphics to medium, and my FPS have gone up from 20 to 26. When turning the camera it’s about 12 fps. (I’m not at Amsterdam, though). At Ultra graphics I’m getting 20 fps without FSLTL.
