Benasque Scenery – Community Helicopter Operations Project (MSFS 2024)

This scenery recreates the Benasque valley (Spain) with a strong focus on helicopter operations, realism and atmosphere.

The project is designed to work especially well with rotary-wing aircraft, offering a believable environment for:

  • SAR operations

  • Mountain approaches

  • Low-level VFR flying

  • Cinematic flights

Seasonal variation plays a key role, allowing Benasque to be experienced across spring, summer, autumn and winter, each with its own visual and operational challenges.

This is a FREE community scenery, developed with attention to detail, testing and performance in mind.

The geographical coordinates of Benasque are approximately 42°36′17″N, 0°31′24″E, placing it in the province of Huesca, Spain, within the La Ribagorza region, in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Latitude: 42°36′17″N
Longitude: 0°31′24″E

ICAO: LESCX

:snow_capped_mountain: Plan de Senarta – Development Progress (Benasque Scenery)

I’d like to share a development update on Plan de Senarta, part of the Benasque scenery project.

The screenshots included show the evolution of the area, comparing the initial state with the work completed so far.

Main work completed to date:

  • Full review of vegetation layout across the area.
  • Density adjustments to avoid the “continuous forest” look that MSFS24 applies by default.
  • Improved definition of clearings, meadows and transitions between open terrain and forested areas.
  • Specific focus on visual readability from helicopters, especially at low altitude: cleaner references, less visual noise and better terrain perception.
  • Revision of roads and access paths to better match the real-world environment.

At present, MSFS24 tends to depict this area as a single block of dense forest. The goal here is to break that uniform pattern and bring the scenery closer to what can be observed in reality, particularly when flying or operating at low level.

:camera_with_flash:

There is still work ahead (fine tuning, area consistency and optimization), but the intended direction for HEMS / SAR operations in Senarta is already becoming clear.

As always, if anyone has recent real-world photos of the area—especially the parking area and surroundings—they would be very helpful.

Work in progress.

:helicopter: Development update – Plan de Senarta to Refugio Coronas route (Benasque Scenery)

Here’s a quick development update on the Benasque helicopter-focused scenery, this time working on the route from Plan de Senarta to Refugio Coronas, which will be part of a future mission.

:warning: Note: the current refuge model is temporary. I’m not fully satisfied with it yet, so it will likely be replaced or reworked.

Latest additions:

  • Custom-designed dirt road with incorrect trees removed.
  • Refugio Coronas area, including chimney and solar panel.
  • Refugio Coronas bridge.
  • Pre-bridge area detailed with:
    • Small shelter
    • Information boards
    • Wooden bench
    • Rock boundaries and terrain treatment

The goal is not just visual quality, but functional and believable helicopter operations, especially for SAR-style missions.

Vs real

More updates soon.
Thanks for following the project!

Hi birdstrike,

do you plan improving the helipad at Refugio de la Renclusa? I tried to land there in winter with little success, as the seems to be not flat area, let alone a sign of a helipad, like a windsock.

Hi! Thanks for the feedback :+1:

Yes, improving the area around Refugio de la Renclusa is something I’m considering, but always with a realistic and operational approach. In real life, that location is not an official, prepared helipad, especially in winter conditions, so the uneven terrain and lack of clear heliport markings are partly intentional at this stage.

That said, I’m currently working on improving other key operational areas in the Benasque valley (paths, clearings, reference points, refuges, etc.), and once that phase is more complete, I’ll reassess places like La Renclusa to see what makes sense to improve without turning them into “fictional helipads.”

Future updates will come as new versions of the scenery once areas are mature enough.

Thanks a lot for testing it and sharing your experience — this kind of feedback is really helpful.
