My eventual goal was to take at least some (more) flying lessons, one day. I have a dof chair/vr etc as of now, so i want to take this next level. I have the GTN750, subscribe to navigraph etc as well.
Im aware there are youtube videos out there that will cover various topics, but they arent updated like some of the online ground “schools” that exist.
At least its my understanding that places like:
Sporty, King School, Pilot institute etc, all are both lifetime access and are updated regularly? Anyone know if they arent?
I like having a repository that i could then dig into instead of hunting on youtube.
I have to say that more than anything i might like a series that covers some IFR/gps training, though there are good ones that exist for msfs, but id like some chart training on how to read thing etc, how to set up flight plans the correct way etc.
Right now the king school has a get it all package for around $500 that has many areas covered.
Any thoughts out there on these paid ones and then maybe paid vs the youtube series that might exist? Mainly wondering if the paid ones are updated and if they go into the details that help someone that isnt fully familiar with charts and things along that line get the knowledge?
EDIT: even though i do like sporty’s interface better, i opted to try Gold Seal, for $99 off thats not too bad of a resource to have either way
I did my real life training with Gleim. It was good , but not great. I have heard good things about Sportys and Cessna’s products. Are you in Pittsburgh based on your username? I have a Cessna 152 hangered at Butler County airport. I have a youtube channel with a lot of local pittsburgh flying videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIjW1Jr4a4M
Oh nice, yes i am. I took flying lessons many years ago (4 total haha) at 9g1 rock airport, i dont think they are around anymore. I’m closer to there, but i work near KAGC, so being that close i started thinking maybe in the next 5 years to finally take some more, pushing 50 already figure i should get started or at least do “some” one more time soon. The idea of a bigger aiport like kagc is a bit daunting though, butler is probably 50 mins from home. I’ve heard beaver might be a nice one too but also far.
I will check out your youtube channel, always interested in seeing local flying.
Yeah I actually live in Bethel Park, very close to AGC. I didn’t train at AGC because the school is linked to CCAC, so they are not a good option for individual flyers like us. They deal with student loans and career track. I can’t have my plane there as well because there is a ten year wait list for hangars. I was able to snag a nice hangar in Butler which is a 60 minute drive for me, but not really a lot of other choices. Yes Beaver has a good school, I can also recommend Airquest at Butler as well as HighFlight at Butler.
I recently earned my PPL and used Sporty’s. Lifetime access, multiple study methods & unlimited practice tests… I liked it.
I used PilotEdge.net for REALLY helpful ATC and chart familiarity, as well as general immersion. Progressively complicated flights using their CAT ratings program was fantastic for skill and confidence building.
FlightInsight is my favorite YouTube channel. Very well put together, modern graphical presentations, and comfortable delivery.
i had just opted to go for Gold Seal ($99 off through today)… had you compared sporty’s to them before? I did like the sportys interface though… i think gold seal is unlimited tests?
There are a lot of good series out there, some mentioned here. If you ever find yourself having questions regarding charts and want feedback, hit up my discord (in profile) and I’d be more than happy to answer!
