The built in voices are better than my old IVONA voices that I’m using in P2A.
The basic voices are very good and sound better than anything but SI ($30/mo).
The premium are close to indistinguishable from human voices and I am betting will be even more indistinguishable once realistic radio interference is added.
I am 100% sure this will be supported and upgraded for free for the 2024. Its also stated support for both in their FAQ…
We will see how long the 2020 version will be supported if there are major differences, but this will anyway be a problem with any third party software - worst case you will at a time be forced to upgrade to msfs 2024 - which you should anyway
Offline voices for me. They sound much better than the Default ATC already.
The Basic und Premium voices are off the table for me.
Not only is having to buy more transmission time over and over again even worse than the expensive subscription that Sayintentions has, but they also chose to measure that transmission time in seemingly arbitrary units that give you no intuitive sense for how long they are going to last you. Feels like trying to hide how much it’s really going to cost.
A few different consumption models are used on the voices, some are per character, some are per time, etc. That is why its so varied. The video in this link explains it.
From what I have heard you will be able to mix and match voice types, potentially down to the different controller level. I plan on keeping all traffic on offline and probably center as well. The rest may ill do basic and ill see how much I’m consuming.
If it will be compatible with 2024 from day one we will only know once it is here.
MS and Asobo could change traffic logic that might require some rework for the injection of real-world traffic.
Else I see not much that could have an influence on BATC as everything else is run outside the sim, as far as I understood.
I don’t feel that way at all. They have to pay for AI and server processing for every specific action a customer takes and that cost must be paid by the customer if BeyondATC doesn’t want to go bankrupt quickly.
Their scheme allows anyone to adjust actual cost by choosing voice type for their own interactions and separately also for AI traffic.
Minimal cost is using offline voices for everything so only TTS time accumulates. You get 3.75 million units when you buy BATC and, with TTS estimated to be 11.5k per flight, that’s over 300 flights already paid for and after that you’d use add-on packs to pay for TTS at about 7 cents per flight.
All you need to do is make three decisions and you can change them anytime you wish:
Use or not use TTS
Offline, basic or premium for ATC for your flight
Offline, basic or premium for ATC with other traffic
Let’s say you do 30 flights a month and only use offline voices. The initial purchase will last you almost a year and after that you’d buy add-on packs at an average of around $2 a month. And if that’s still too much, just stop using push-to-talk to avoid voice recognition and you will never have pay anything extra again.
So even if you end up never wanting to buy an add-on pack, your $60 still got you a new ATC that is miles better than the default ATC AND a new proper AI traffic system that doesn’t kill your FPS.
I would only be interested in the offline voices, which would surely be a download and therefore editable - does anyone here remember EditVoicePack for FSX and FS9? $60 is about 3 times more than I’d be willing to pay for a voicepack, especially since I’ve already got FSLTL for free.
Its worse for all the power users who fly every day.
For everyone that fly less its way more fair, we dont have to pay for the power users - which is basicly what a subscription model does. Or every month for a product we only use now and then.
We will see how long Say Intensions will last with its price model, its a huge risk if they loose non power users and once they implement more traffic their cost will spike to the roof.
And no, there is no hidden cost - its barely profits for the developers - you just dont understand the cost of this technology.
But if you really understand the cost im not sure why you are blaming the developers to “try to hide cost”. For anyone who understands it, this price model make perfect sense. Not worth it? That I can understand - thats exactly why this product let you choose the technology you can afford.
Having worked part-time as an air/ground operator (not full tower/approach etc)at a small airfield as well as an R/T instructor for my local flying club in the somewhat distant past, the sim ATC has always been an irritant, especially the same few voices for ATC and other traffic. I’ve dabbled with the other ATC programmes but found then too much like hard work or simply not better enough than the sim. Vatsim is a no-no for me as the cover is just not there when or where I want it. I hope and believe the basic BATC programme, even at the relatively high price of $60, will be the answer so unless it turns out not to be as advertised (which I’m sure won’t be the case) I’ll be buying it.
I’ll then try out the various options using the in-purchase time allowance before deciding if I want to invest further. Flight simming is a hobby for me and I’m fortunate enough to be able to indulge myself. However I’m not into wasting money so the path I eventually decide to take will depend on what I find.
It perhaps behoves us to remember that there are an awful lot of MSFS users who maybe don’t have the luxury of disposable income and, being used to so much freeware being available, find any kind of ongoing payment, whether by subscription or pay-as-you-go, to be somewhat abhorrent.
I was talking about the transmission units and giving an insane number of 3.5 Million transmission units that you get with the initial purchase, which sounds like a lot, but really isn’t, as already pointed out by different sources. The costs are the costs but they sure could be made much more transparent without people having to study up on it first or having to use calculators.
I’m guessing this has been discussed somewhere (here or Discord), but I would hope that the BATC GUI has a very clear “gas gauge” display of how many units are available. It would be very interesting to make and receive ATC calls and instantly watch the gauge go down and see how much we’re using.
I see, although I dont think its about transparency but rather a really variable cost depending on traffic, interactions, flight time etc. which is why there is a such a spike in the examples.
But yeah, end of day its not ideal to punch into calculators what you expect your usage will be. Although its fair pricing I have still no idea how much this product will really cost me.
I think the mistake is using the word “Time” in the description of the credits. It is not TIME. It’s time + quality. And the scale of MILLIONS is just weird. Gives absolutely no clue of what rate of depletion or value this has.
It is like when currencies go mad in inflation in times of war or political disruption. I remember in the ex-Yugoslavia when the VALUE of their Dinars when through the floor and in the space of a year (from my vague memory) it would cost like 1 million for a loaf of bread, where the previous year it was like 1000… the factors are just ridiculous and very confusing. What was 1 Dinar worth if bread cost a million?
It comes with a chunk of credit included when you buy it. By the time you’ve used up that credit you’ll know which voices are the right choice for you. Worrying about it now is not very productive.
But it is productive. If you know that the Basic / Premium voices are out of the question financially beforehand you can stick to the offline voices right away.
However, if you first try out the Basic / Premium voices only to find out later that you can’t or don’t want to afford them, the high quality of these voices may have ruined the lower quality offline voices for you forever.
