Bing Maps is embarrassingly outdated

Because Bing Maps is literally supposed to be a direct competitor. I’m not sure how I can explain it any better, as you seem to be quite dense.

Live in Germany. In Fuerth a part of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Area. The cities are melted together. On 2013-12-28 a very big furniture store was opening. In the Game there is still an Image of the construction cite. The image must be 8-9 years old.

My street was built in 2015. in Game it’s still farming land.

The images could be a little bit more up to date.

You are unknowingly stating the main problem I have with this sim. It is suppose to be a Flight Simulator and not a Scenery Simulator. More focus should be on the planes and airports. PERIOD.

The roads and structures from China are from 20 years ago and haven’t been updated since early 2000s

Next step : MFS2020 being sued by players raging about the fact that their house has the wrong roof color.

Too many spoiled child around here…I mean seriously guys manage your expectations.

Would be nice to simply enjoy the fact that we have a full earth to explore - more accurate than any sims ever created- and that you can change day time and weather on the go in a few clicks without having to launch a new session.

Also good to point out that MFS is out for only 10 days.

I’m really not sure why there are so many people who are dense enough to entirely miss the point of my post.

First of all, nice boomer attitude. Second, my expectations are managed. I am comparing Microsoft’s Bing Maps product to the product that it is supposed to be a direct competitor to. I am not asking them to perform a miracle or do something that is impossible; I am merely asking them to do better and keep up with the product that they are supposed to be competing with.

This demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of both my post and how this game even works. Once again, I am not complaining about the game itself, I am complaining about the underlying product that serves as the foundation for the game’s world. Microsoft’s “maps” product has existed in some form or another since 2005, yet has always been objectively inferior to the competition.

I would highly suggest that any further person who intends to respond negatively to this post first work on their own reading comprehension skills before replying with what they think is a clever and/or snarky comment. Ask yourself this - would this game be better had it used the competition’s product instead of Bing Maps? The answer to this is an objective “yes”. Microsoft can do better, they don’t need you defending them.

Ah, irony. adjusts monocle

The DaXing international airport in Beijing is completely missing…

This is totally wrong. MS has its own satellites and has been around for a very long time. It only takes $ 10 million to launch a satellite and much less to design it. You think Bill waited …? Obviously not … Bing is a huge company that only subcontract applications. Absurd… Stop believing the press … Which in no way detracts from BG’s action. Its simulator can be improved but great. I enjoy the 787!

How’d you go about that?

There is a bunch of tutorials on the OSM wiki that will take you through it, but in short you draw nodes, ways and areas over features, typically using bing satellite images, surveys and other data as reference and apply appropriate tags to describe those features which can be anything from large features like buildings and roads down to small things like trash cans and lamp posts.

The US has very recent images, however, they probably do not want to display them because they are so extremely high detail. I am told, one can even read the document a govt official is holding. Wow, talk about super high resolution.

So, I’ve noticed some interesting things about the maps in this game so far. I like in the Tampa area of Florida, and it uses photogrammetry for it’s buildings. They look quite good, but are about 6+ years out of date. Especially in my neighborhood, where, in game, it’s mostly dirt and just a few houses.

The map that is used for the manual cache is more up to date, but still about 2 years old. Compared to the bing maps site, which is pretty recent, as it shows my house with some work we had completed just over a year ago. It makes me wonder what goes into the photogrammetry part of the maps, since most of the cities that I’ve checked out look good, but are out of date.

And, out of curiosity, I checked out google earth to see how their photogrammetry looked. It was maybe about a year newer that what bing showed in my area, so even that was out of date.

I wonder, with all this attention now being drawn to bing maps and their 3d cities, if they will work on getting more updates out. It’ll be interesting to see. I imagine it’s probably quite a bit of effort.

I have an OSM account. Need to take some time to learn how to use it and start updating my neighborhood.

I think you’ve no idea how much work and money is spend on those maps. Imagine a time where people used printed maps and how rarely they got updated.

Rarely? Printed road maps were updated every year in the UK.

The map is is so old over my town that you can see roundhouses and a well*

  • only joking

I would rather regions that currently have no photo coverage get dealt with before we start getting annual updates for Dullsville, Idaho just so that one person can take a ss of his/her house.

I just found a major highway near Wellington in New Zealand (Centennial highway that runs up the west coast) that appears, from the air, to be under construction…it’s mainly sand with lots of digger tracks in it, piles of concrete stacked up near incomplete bridges and junctions, etc. However, there’s traffic driving on it at 70mph already…and AFAIK, that road was built in 1939.
