Bing maps for my neighborhood, Pacfic Palisades, CA 90402 are about 4 years old! The house next door has been gone for well over 4 years (maybe 5 years, or older?) now and new one is there now (which has taken 4+ years to build). There are also several other new houses… All of these had the lot cleared and a completely new house built (all very large)!! If the Bing maps were current, or even a year old, you would definitely see these homes…
Yep. For the area I grew up in (St. Charles County, MO) there is a new highway that was built around 5 years ago? Well, that is just dirt at the moment. Got to love it!
If you are talking about RoK as the Republic of Korea, so I can tell you that there is no photogrammetry data available at all (as in most of Asia). I 've been flying around Korea and I can see everywhere low res satellite imagery and autogen buildings and trees just like in most other parts of the world.
You can blame the government for not letting any party outside of Korea (Google or Microsoft) have good quality satellite images under the excuse of national security, while Korean companies such as Kakao and Naver have high res images on their map services. National monopoly at its best
Hi, I am not talking photogrammetry - assuming this is the name given to the process where AI will place building based on what is found on the satellite imagery? I am talking about areas of the terrain which isn’t using satellite imagery at all, instead recreating the terrain procedurally.
The satellite imagery for the Republic of Korea is fine, or it is in GE at least. In another guise, I do development work for Falcon BMS - specifically I am building airbase models. I use satellite images from GE as the baseline template in 3DS Max and the quality of the images I download allow me to faithfully reproduce taxiway markings and other detail.
If you refer to the screenshot I posted 7 days ago and concentrate on the right third of the image you can see this procedural terrain in the fields and forests. I can assure you the same area is quite clean in GE, or even Google Maps:
Nice to meet you. Glad there are some people doing work for Falcon still.
Did you check the same area in Bing maps? Flight Simulator uses Bing, not GE. Maybe they are also missing in Bing, for some reason or are extremely low quality. Otherwise I would report it as a bug.
GE quality is noticeably worse for Korea than it is for most countries. I was told that Korean government does not allow foreign companies to publish higher quality imagery of Korea.
Btw. do you know if there are some 3rd party developers planning to do some add-on of freeware sceneries for Korea?
I don’t know what the deal is with Bing, but as an example Kunsan AB is totally not there. When I started the BMS project one of the first places I looked was Bing and after seeing RKJK was missing I stopped looking, not been back since!
In the context of the title of this thread, I concur 100 percent - Bing Maps are embarassing compared to GE and in many respects (read as certain parts of the world) present a huge disadvantage to MFS.
I haven’t heard anything about 3rd party Dev for MFS Korea to date.
