Black avionics screens after update

@hobanagerik Yeah, but I’m just going by what worked for me. Because when I tried to set ‘Use Generic Planes (AI Traffic)’ to On by itself without resetting the entire page to default, it didn’t work. So it’s best to reset the entire graphics page as that will set Generic Planes to On for definite.

The way I was sure was I reset all options in General, tweaked to taste, left Generic Planes on all day, had no issues for the first time since Thursday. Then I switched it Off to see what happened - instantly, issues. And it makes sense because of what it controls and the knock-on effect it would have.

Yeah, having AI traffic off would help too, that was my initial fix. But this is better because you can still have traffic enabled this way.

Right, so in effect you have said that the one option didn’t fix it after all! Something else in the reset did though, or a combination?

We have to be careful about not leading Asobo down the garden path, as it were, with providing spurious information. If you changed it on its own, and it didn’t fix it, then it’s likely not this that fixes it!

It would also be useful to have a repeatable testing methodology. Which environment can you put yourself in to guarantee you will see the issue? If you don’t have that, you will never know your “fix” has done anything at all. You could be flying around for hours claiming that it is resolved, when in fact you just never got hit by the bug.

As I say, I made no changes to my settings yesterday, other than have all AI traffic off, and flew for two hours without seeing the issue once.

Yet on the Squirrel flight on Sunday, with 30+ other flyers, I saw it almost instantly.

No, what I mean is it didn’t switch back to On - it showed that it did, but the behaviour remained. I’ve had other issues in the menu and the map where obvious things haven’t saved. So I reset the graphics to default, changed all my settings back to how I wanted them (yes, I remember them all exactly), and concentrated solely on Generic Planes On or Off.

And like I said, you had AI traffic off. That, along with Ground Aircraft Density, was part of my original fix as it was causing instant issues, and I had Generic Planes off at the time. With the same settings and Generic Planes On, the errors in the dev console are thousands less and the plane is not affected. It’s like an umbrella command for anything that has AI instrumentation.

I don’t see how I’m leading Asobo down the garden path. They’re professional developers, they know more than I do, all I know is with that one setting - and yes, I’ve tested multiple times with only that setting - the situation changes.

I really can’t say any more than that, I’ve spent hours upon hours since Saturday trying to find a fix for this, and if I were to explain every single thing I did, I would lose my mind.

Also, remember that there is a separate setting for multiplayer Generic Planes which is set to Off by default. They were all in close proximity with each other, in the middle of the sea at times, many of them complaining of hearing clicking dials and switches. If they had set Generic Multiplayer Planes to On, things probably would have been different. Squirrel himself said he’d never experienced it before going on multiplayer - my guess is he had Generic Planes set to On.

Yeah, that was the first thing I noticed, I also saw my fuel mixture lever move all by itself, but my hardware throttle kept it locked in place, so it kind of twitched.

I really appreciate your efforts, and its all the more important to keep detailed logs of what you changed, because if your work can’t be replicated, then its ultimately pointless.

I will have a look later on, and see what I have that option set to.

@hobanagerik If you have AI Traffic off and Ground Aircraft Density to 0 (as my original workaround stated), then it wouldn’t matter if you have Generic AI Planes on or off as there would be nothing for it to control and therefore cause conflicts.

There has to be other planes - in the air or on the ground - before you can consider the effect of Generic Planes on or off. The easiest way is setting Ground Aircraft Density to 100 and be near a large airport. Generic Planes on, nothing should happen - off, your plane should have issues.

I intend to have a play around somewhere busy, like Heathrow, and see if I can trigger the issue first. If I can, then we can proceed to the next step of trying out your fix.

What would also be nice is a method of fixing the avionics if/when the bug does strike. So far nothing I have tried has worked. Even a full shutdown, and re-start won’t bring them back.

I’m not sure if I tried using the developer console to switch to another plane, then back again. Something else to play around with later.

What you could do is (Ground Aircraft Density to 100, AI Traffic 100/100, Generic Planes On) fly over an area with a big airport (I was able to do this just flying around Haneda Airport, Tokyo in a King Air), then at a specific moment, Generic Planes Off, should fail.

Then, set Generic Planes On again and load a new plane in dev mode. That might work. Only thing is if you have a flight plan loaded, you’ll probably lose that. And autopilot settings, although autopilot tends to go off when the issue hits too.

I just did a quick check of my settings, I’m supposed to be remote working so can’t actually fly, but I have the following configured:

I have had the issue before in this configuration, but only when around other players, so perhaps the bottom option on would have been enough to stop that?

Yeah, that goes along with what I’ve thought previously. Set Multiplayer Generic Planes to On and you should be ok around other players too.

Geforce 2070 8 GB

Same here same planes also da62 flying and out of the blue right side avionics turns off and also the avionics switch

That is not it i reset the hall sim took me 1.30mins to installed and same issue

FWIW I have always kept the generic plane models set to ON and have never had the issues described in this thread.

Thanks to all those debugging this issue for free (you shouldn’t have to). At least we can actually fly the sim we paid for again…

Unfortunately this did not fix my issues - at least on the A320. The screens are still going black/dimmed even with the ground aircraft set to 0.

It looks like many simmers have the blank screen problem and some others have no problem at all.

I suffered plenty of problems with my Cessna’s Garmin 1000 screens going blank upon installing the second update last Thursday but, for some mysterious reason, since Sunday morning, my screens going blank problem has not occurred. Not once. I do not recall making any changes to my sim last weekend and yet, the issue is gone.

Just now, reading the long Wednesday morning exchange between s00zster and hobanagerik got me asking myself: could it be that before Sunday I had my generic AI planes ‘Off’ and, somehow, turned the setting ‘On’ Saturday evening or early Sunday morning and that this might account for my no longer experiencing blank screens from that point on? I cannot remember if I did the change but, checking just now, I find that my generic planes are set to ‘On’. (And Multiplayer is ‘Off.’)

Per Jummivana’s request, these are my card and memory specs : GTX 1060 with 6 Gigs.

I’m running my year-old gaming PC ‘Windowed’ for ease of access to my navigator software. Sim Resolution is set at 1920 by 1080 and my frames are at 60.

When my Xbox Game Pass download finished, (to my ‘C’ SSD), I found my sim settings had automatically been set to ‘High End.’ The only change I made in Graphics was to turn on ‘Lens Correction’ but this slight change was enough to change my Graphics setting to ‘Custom.’

Under ‘Traffic’, I have Real-Time Online ‘On’ and my three ‘Airport Life’ sliders are at 100%.

In ‘Data’, under ‘Data Connection,’ my six sliders are set to ‘On’ and under ‘Current Data Consumption,’ all ‘data limitations’ are ‘Off.’

I have the latest nVidia drivers but I did not let nVidia ‘tweak’ my sim. I placed two sceneries in my ‘Community’ folder, with no apparent problems. Finally, I find Plan-G runs very well for me with the new sim, alongside FSUIPC7.

I fly the Cessna 172 with Garmin 1000 avionics almost exclusively while I’m getting used to the new sim and I’m looking forward to a correction to the autopilot’s strange behavior. I love this new sim and I think the developers did a great job considering the extreme complexity of this code.

Thank you for this, will be passing on to the devs for review!
