I don’t know how to use CG tools, so I admire your skills and knowledge.
This is a sudden and rather abrupt request.
I’m flying the Zero Fighter Type 52 in Blackbird Simulations in VR, but the text on the magnetic compass is too small to read, which is a problem.
If you happen to know the folder and file name where the magnetic compass texture is stored, could you please tell me? I know it’s not realistic, but I want to make the text larger.
If I can determine direction with the magnetic compass, I’ll be able to enjoy flying over the sea relying solely on the compass, just like with a real aircraft.
I have absolutely no intention of burdening you.
If investigating this takes too long, please feel free to ignore it.
Since I have the cockpit imported into Blender for my extended English labels it’s no trouble to find other cockpit textures. I think what you are looking for is:
A6M2_ZERO_INT_DECALS_ALBD.PNG.KTX2
Which is located in: SimObjects\Airplanes\BlackbirdSims_A6M5Zero\common\texture
You’ll also need to edit the emissive texture: A6M2_ZERO_INT_DECALS_EMIS.PNG.KTX2
Good luck! And please share your results since I’d be interested in a slightly easier to read compass too, even not in VR!
There’s a bunch of information on the Zero at this site. This particular link has a link to I think it’s the captured manual, and a US Navy test report, plus a bunch of other information.
Edit: unfortunately, the A6M3 archived manual link is broken, but there’s a whole lot more information on the plane in the site. Is that the manual you used @hayate1944 ?
I apologize for the late reply.
Thank you for sharing the information.
I was aware of the existence of that site.
I don’t know what kind of manual the broken link is, but if it was a Japanese document, it’s possible it’s the same one I referenced.
The following document is, I believe, the most trusted primary source in Japan.
“Instruction Manual for Zero Fighter Carrier-Based Fighter,” October 1944, Naval Air Headquarters
This document is structured as follows, with only the differences from the previously written descriptions listed in Part 2 and beyond. It’s possible the broken link was to Part 2 below.
Instruction Manual
Zero Fighter
Contents
Part 1: Zero Fighter Model 11/21
Part 2: Zero Fighter Model 32
Part 3: Zero Fighter Model 52
Part 4: Zero Fighter Model 52c/53c/63

Based on the information you provided, I’ve enlarged the text on the magnetic compass.
I’ve managed to make the magnetic compass usable in VR as well.
Thank you.
The method is as follows:
The following three KTX2 files contain PNG images with compass markings. Modify the text in that area to be larger.
For some reason, the original divides the distance from west to north at 120 degrees instead of 90 degrees. Strangely, it still correctly points to east, west, north, and south, so I only corrected the position of the numerical values while leaving the markings as they were.
The compass’s functionality was tested at a location in Indonesia where the magnetic declination is 0 degrees.
When playing in VR (Meta Quest 3), the default magnetic compass numbers are too small to read, so I sacrificed realism and enlarged the text.
I’ve reflected this in the three liveries I created.
Please use this if you want to wander the ocean relying on a magnetic compass in VR.
I don’t understand English very well and rely on machine translation for communication.
Please confirm if my understanding is correct.
• You are one of the developers of Blackbird Simulations.
• You would like to include some (or all three) of the liveries I created in the package for the A6M5 update of Blackbird Simulations.
If my understanding above is correct, my answer is “yes.”
My work is purely a hobby and not a business, so I can provide everything for free.
If processing is needed, I can also provide PNG files before conversion to KTX2.
I have friends who uses Xbox, so I would be very happy if you could make it available on Xbox.
Please ignore this if my understanding is incorrect.
Would you be interested in adding my extended English labels on the fuel tank selectors? It’s a very trivial enhancement and reuses the existing texture images.
I wish the latest patch had fixed the tailwheel lock lever not animating with a control binding. I hear the mechanical sound when I press the button on my peripheral, but the lever still remains where it was.
Hi, I am still fascinated by the aircraft. It never gets boring and the repaints are all really good too, A1-3-123 is my personal favorit.
I would just like to see the manual switching of the supercharger simulated.
I’m currently creating a mod with the correct speeds and a fixed rudder trim tab so the aircraft flies straight during cruise -30mp 2000 rpm 143 knots at 500 meters.
I set the idle rpm down to 600rpm at sl so i think on airports over 2000 ft you have to hold the throttle slightly open to keep the engine running.
and a few other things to make the aircraft even more realistic than it already is.
I am the happy new owner of this beautiful aircraft. I am trying to refine my flying technique, so would you happen to have any tips for takeoff? I often find myself veering off to the left or right (struggling with the rudder).
Thanks in advance for your advice, and happy flying to everyone.
I can’t remember if this has a tail wheel lock …if it does, then.check its locked when lined up before take off (and unlocked for taxiing!)
Also, apply the power gently and smoothly …not just full throttle from the start.
Both of those tips apply to all tail draggers …which are always a bit ‘interesting’ when taking off in the sim!
