BlackBox Simulation releases Cessna L-19 ‘Bird Dog’

Puling back on the yoke/stick is a standard practice in real life

Did not know that from taildraggers though, indeed standard practice in ‚conventional‘ landing gear sports planes, to take the weight off the nose landing gear. Which obsoletes in bigger Aircraft (at least starting in CJ/Phenom class), where this absolutely does not impact taxi behavior.

How do you guys rate this bird as a bush flyer? I’ve been looking for a tandem seat bush plane that is a bit more old school. This looks to fit the bill. Does it have any engine realism? I really love the BN2 Islander so I’m hoping this is of similar quality.

It’s ok for what it is - been a couple years or more since I’ve touched it. (So keep that in mind things might have changed) I thought the textures were pretty basic, not great but get the job done, no realism as far as engine stalls, overheats, failures, etc etc. Standard fare I guess I would say.

I do remember it seemed to fly decently and it was fun for a little plane to mess around with. Hoever if I was looking for an old school bush flying tail dragger and wanted more realism I’d point you to big radials norseman. It’s a heavier plane, but it’s ■■■■ fine to fly and watch while in flight. It does have engine problems if you don’t do it right!

Thanks. I’ll check out the Norseman - probably is bigger than what I was wanting but I will keep an open mind. I guess there is also the Wilga too.

Yeah Wilga is super solid too, I really like it. If you want something that’s really cool - though not traditional, the GotFriend DoubleEnder is my absolute site seeing favorite.

Thanks, I have the DoubleEnder and it’s great, but I was looking for something more old school with engine realism and a throatier sound.

I’m kind of fond of the husky when I’m feeling ‘normal’, but it’s not old school on the panel. It’s fun to taxi with a flying tail. Otherwise I’m usually in something GG. For some reason the Husky is the only amphibian that actually feels like it has floats hanging under it vs the wheeled version. The carbon cub is decent though. And there’s always the Wilga, but like GG mods it’s hard to behave yourself. The 152 taildragger is fun too if you want to have to ‘work for it’.

Sorry, but what does GG stand for? And yes, I’d forgotten about the 152 tail dragger version. There’s also the classic 172 tail dragger from Bagolu.

EDIT: Wait… GotGravel? That would make sense cus those planes are fun to mess around in.

You want tandem? That is one seat in front and one in back, right? The BN2 Islander is side by side.

If you want side by side, I would recommend the Rans S6 by FlyBoy Simulations, it’s amazing!

Thanks, I’ll check out the Rans. Yeah tandem is one seat front and back, but I’m not too beholden to that requirement.

I kind of agree with others that the GG “Cub” variants offer good/(better - free) tandem bush options.
However, I also wouldn’t want you to overlook another free bird kind of flying under the radar - Restauravia’s fine simulation of the Nord 3400.
Personally, I am somewhat annoyed by the whining prop looping sound in the Bird Dog and its extremely floaty tail, on ground maneuvers. Sadly, it appears like the developer has pretty much ceased updates to this former favorite of mine.

It’s one of my favourites too and I still fly it a lot- gladly purchase an updated V2 from Blackbox if they decided to do one…

YES the got gravel crew, nitrous boost off barth 10, immediate Immelmann at the hill, land on the pianos on 28, or full rudder crab hover 2’ across the whole thing at 35KT and plop it on the other end for a turnaround, or just land in the parking spot by the worker, or fly your approaches inverted, or, you get the idea.

To be accurate the actual name of the “GG” developer(s) that some, myself included, referred to is “Got Friends”. They also put out the payware Wilga, noted previously.

This little bugger has been on my wish list forever, I’ll probably pick it up on the next round of shopping. Quagmired in goofing with traffic and addon linker right now. I like fickle taildraggers and frumpy crabbed crosswind approaches

If I didn’t already own the BBS Bird Dog (love it BTW), it would be a difficult choice right now between buying it and hoping for an update that most likely will never happen, or instead waiting for the promised AT Simulations release that looks much better. But I have not heard any news on that one for months either.

I’m gonna email them and ask.

I’m still tempted to grab the BBS one, simply because I like their BN2 so much and it’s fairly cheap.

Sadly some devs let their aircraft die over time. I tend to stick to aircraft from devs I know they will support their addons. JustFlight is an example.

I’d wait for the ATSimulations Bird Dog at this point. I bought the BBS one for cheap, but I don’t think I got my money’s worth. It looks too cartoony for my liking. Visuals are very important. Same with the Shorts 360 / Sherpa btw. That cockpit just doesn’t work for me from a visual standpoint, so I don’t really fly her.
