Blackpool, Barton and Oxford - UK Update

Quick flight to have a bash at the UK update yesterday - Result = Delighted.

Blackpool (EGNM) taxi ways are updated and correctly labelled - Thanks
Barton looks lovely although could do with a Barton Bridge and a ChillFactor Building to really set it off as they are very significant landmarks right next to the Airport

Oxford… There is an Oxford Kidlington Airport rather than just a Runway!! Absolutely chuffed.

Thanks All, looking forward to exploring more.

Spawn at EGGP too and look around. It’s gorgeous

At Liverpool Approach I don’t see Runcorn Bridge , Fiddlers Ferry Power Station , a very poor Gateway Bridge, Big Tower on the Wirral was I expecting too much.
Also at EGNH only Blackpool Tower , no piers, no big dipper, no Inskip Masts, No Winter Hill Transmitter all good VFR landmarks when I did my PPL.

Yep you were. The key here is to give you half, and then allow third parties to give you the other half

Buy Digital Design’s EGGP from the in-sim marketplace for £13 to get Runcorn Bridge, Fiddlers Ferry Power Station, a realistic Gateway Bridge and more!

UK got about 100 hand-crafted landmarks for free, not only is that an exceptional amount given the relatively small area, but it’s also considerably more than Japan and US. On top of that the best satellite/elevation data in the sim.

So I cannot see any reason to complain really.

I don’t think he was complaining but yeah I agree with the rest of what you said :stuck_out_tongue:

Another thumbs up for Digital Designs Liverpool. MS added The Liver Buildings and football stadiums so the two combined give grea results

This. Nuff said sire! The best of both worlds. People need to realize Microsoft have zero intention to kill off the third parties.

I think we are seeing the same thing that occurred with the last two World Updates. People confuse handcrafted scenery and photogrammetry. In most cases, without A LOT of human intervention, photogrammetry is sorely limited by the AI algorithms used to create it. Most looks great at a distance but if you get too close you realize the limitations. The POI’s are hand crafted and stand up to scrutiny. The rest is better than autogen at a distance but not close up.
The result is expectations are dashed. The only way to live up to those expectations is to hand craft every building, lamp post and phone box. Performance wise this would be more efficient and FPS friendly than photogrammetry while also providing a stunning scenery. Sadly, the man hours required to hand craft every significant building in the UK’s major cities would be astronomical.
Photogrammetry is the compromise. Stay above 1000ft AGL and you will be happy as long as you don’t look for specific landmarks like your neighborhood pub and just enjoy the overall effect.
One day…

I’m not sure if this is the correct forum to be posting this question, but as many of you seem to be very familiar with the British Isles I’ll give it a try.

There is a very tiny, picturesque, remote island somewhere off the coast of England that has a grass airfield, light-house and pub. I recently watched an on-line video of a pair of light single-engine aircraft (Austers possibly?) flying over to it from the “mainland”.

Can anyone provide me any ideas about what the name of that island might be?

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the one up near Oban. Name escapes me at present.

Thanks Magic6420,

I just took a look around the Oban area and I couldn’t find it.

Perhaps a little better description would help.

I recall that the island appeared to have cliffs all around it with a single light-house (possibly abandoned) and a pub that was the only commercial facility on it. It was a single run-way grass field that was well above sea-level - perhaps 8-10 meters. No airport buildings at all and as I remember it, people just basically camped out there for overnight stays.

Admittedly a pretty pathetic description, but I’d really like to try to find it in MSFS. It surely wouldn’t require a lot of hand-crafting to make it realistic!

Yaaay! I just found that remote island airfield in the UK that I asked about, previously.

It’s called Lundy Airfield - EGZV.

MSFS has it accurately mapped with what appears to be proper topography. Unfortunately, there is considerable auto-generation of buildings (hotels/guest houses, etc.) where there should be just a campground. But it is still a great “bush-trip” and fun to fly circuits around.

If anyone else is interested, I first discovered this fascinating place on a YouTube video by a British Aeronca pilot. It is called “Lundy Flight” and is quite fascinating itself.
