So after reading through the PMDG forum on wheel contact points, I realized the disappointment we all will face when the 777 comes out and the triple wheel bogey on the main landing gear will behave as a single main gear when it comes to contact points. That means, from what I understand, the 3rd wheel on the bogey will go through the ground on landing and only the middle wheel will make ‘contact’ with the runway / ground.
How did MS think this would be OK when they have a 787 and 747 default aircraft with multiple rows of wheels on the main gear, plus the countless heavy / widebody aircraft in development by 3rd party devs. I know PMDG expressed they have tried everything they can to create some sort of realistic contact points for the triple bogey landing gear but to no avail.
Asobo / MS: THis is something that should absolutely be supported in a modern flight sim. Hoping others agree, this will affect the way you feel the landings on large, multi-row wheel aircraft, and not in a good way. I surely don’t look forward to the 777 and A380 feeling like a heavy 737 or A320 with a single bogey main gear on landing.
Considering Asobo just addressed the ground handling physics and improved them, I would hope they can address this in a future update since it wasn’t address with the ground handling.
This game is full of issues like this one. I only hope some of them will be addressed in MSFS 2024, I doubt we will see any improvements in the current edition.
This is an issue that needs attention, as a simulator, there are big differences in the way heavies land and touchdown in comparison to single bogey aircraft. Just look at the a330 and how far down the rear mains 2nd row of tires hangs, and always touches first, then slowly lowering onto both tows of tires, before then dropping the nose. There’s no way to simulate that accurately as is. The 777 also has a decent tilt to the main gear when touching down with the rear tire hitting first, then the rest of the main flattening out to make contact.
