The owners of the airfield, Highland Council, refer to it as Broadford Aerodrome, I think it is best to call it that.
-
Yes, the runway is 07/25.
Iāve submitted corrections for the EGEI Broadford Aerodrome (or Airfield) via the World Hub with the following notes:
NOTE: This airport is now found under the name āClutton Hill Airstripā which is incorrect. It should be found under the name āBroadford Aerodromeā or āBroadford Airfieldā as discussed in the above link. It is my understanding this cannot be changed using the World Hub. MSFS/Asobo, PLEASE CHANGE THE NAME!
- Changed runway from 6/24 to 7/25
- Corrected length and width of runway to 771m x 23m
- Corrected heading of runway and its placement.
- Added 24m overrun on rwy 07
- Deleted aprons over runway
- Added one apron over part of runway to make color lighter as in Bing Maps aerial.
- Changed some aprons. Many nodes moved per coordinates from Bing Maps aerial.
- Added parking area stripes per Bing Maps aerial.
- Moved runway taxiway paths to be centered to new runway placement and orientation.
- Moved one windsock to be closer to that depicted in Pooley airport diagram.
- Added a second windsock and placed in location depicted in Pooley airport diagram.
- Added Papi2 rwy 07 with spacing of 8m
- Added Papi2 rwy 25 with spacing of 8m
Hopefully, the reviewers at MSFS will see these notes and correct the name as well!! I hope this helps some, anyway.
I was on the Isle of Skye more than 40 years ago and absolutely loved it. I have very good memories of it.
UPDATE:
Version 2 (Update)
- Taxiway for parking spots 8 and 9 moved off runway. (This taxiway had not been changed in previous version. It was the way it had been created for the original sim airport).
- FUEL spot was deleted because no Fuel area is shown on Pooley airport diagram.
- Added helipad per location depicted in Pooley airport diagram which is approximately where the FUEL spot was previously.
NOTE: Original problem appears to have been caused by an incorrect identification by Bing Maps. If one inquires on āBroadford Aerodromeā, the following is returned in Bing Maps.
NOTE: This airport is also referred to as āAshaig Airfieldā by the Skye Flying Club. Skye Flying Club
The World Hub reviewer stated: āAs for the naming of the airport, I have asked other team members about this and will get back to you about it.ā
Itās worth pointing out that magnetic North is slowly but continually migrating, 06/24 was probably correct at one time.
No, the runways have been 07/25 ever since the airfield was constructed by the British Army, Royal Engineers in 1972.
Thank you so much for picking this up, hopefully Asobo will correct it and issue an update soon.
Skye is a special place, the weather can be challenging at times, but thatās a factor of itās location.
Many thanks once again.
Ah then it would be interesting to know the exact bearing when lined up now. Iām guessing it may have been automatically reassigned according to sat imagery
I think R25 is 247 degrees. As the wind is predominantly westerly, most take-offās and landings are on R25.
Next time Iām down, Iāll get an accurate measure.
I am a member of Skye Flying Club. Ashaig is the name of the hamlet where the airfield is situated, Broadford is the nearest large settlement.
Ashaig Airfield, Isle of Skye Airfield or Broadford Aerodrome would all be acceptable. The main thing is that it gets the ICAO code of EGEI given back to it.
Airfield page on Highland Council website.
Fuel spot needed to go, there is no fuel available for visiting aircraft.
The helicopter apron is an area reserved for SAR or Air Ambulance helicopters to transfer casualties to / from road ambulances.
Received the following: āI have spoken to some team members and unfortunately, thereās nothing that can be done with the naming of this airport, sorry :(ā.
Good to hear that the fuel spot goes and the helipad is IRL! Appreciate your help with this. The update should be available with the next Airac release, on or after Aug.8. Let me know if thereās anything that seems wrong. We have the World Hub alpha until the WU18 release date. After that it wonāt be until after MSFS 2024 is released that the World Hub reopens.
Itās truly disappointing that an airfield which is wrongly named, canāt have that corrected, even Bing Maps shows it as Broadford Airstrip
.
Bing Maps - Directions, trip planning, traffic cameras & more
If they had Heathrow named as John Lennon Airport, I bet it could be done. But hey, I tried.
Iāll feedback when the update happens.
Thanks for all your help with this.
Following your update to the airfield which has just been released, it looks pretty good. In real life, there are structures where Ramp 1 is placed and Ramp 2 is within the vehicular access, but all the rest are valid enough.
If a third party scenery designer updates it to add the real life āfurnitureā, Iām sure those can be addressed, but itās much more useable than it was.
So, apart from it having the name of an airfield which is 430 miles away, itās pretty good!
Many thanks for trying to get the airfield name changed and tweaking the stock airfield, itās much appreciated.
Thank you for checking it out! We can still make changes in the World Hub (for a while), so if you would explain any changes that would make it better, I will be happy to make the changes and submit them. Also, if you can post photos, I can use the full SDK (not the World Hub) to add buildings or other objects in the correct places and put it up on Google Drive so you can download it or even post it on FlightSim.to.
Should I remove Ramp 1 and Ramp 2 with the World Hub? Itās an easy change to make. And if you send photos, I will place (at least) default buildings and other objects that (hopefully) look similar and get it to you.
Again, thank you for checking it out and letting me know about it!
About three years ago, a guy uploaded a third party version of Broadford Aerodrome on flightsim.to. I sent him some photos and he made a pretty decent job of it.
If I send you the same photos, it would be brilliant if the default airfield could look as realistic, itās a pretty scruffy place to be honest ![]()
Ok, Iāll try and find the photos. Thanks
Ok, so in the simulator default scenery, West of the 07 end of the runway, there is a house. In reality it is just a low, square stone wall adjacent to Ashaig Cemetery. The wall encloses St Maelrubhasā Well, which dates back to the 7th Century.
And yes, please remove Ramp 1 and 2.
Thank you!
Sorry, just re-read your earlier post. I understand that what you may create is a third party airport, not to become part of the default scenery.
Wow! The guy that did the airport before did a really nice job! I donāt know whether I have the time or inclination to do all that detail, but I will try to get as close as I can as time permits.
If you still have the airport, perhaps you could zip it up and make it available by Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive (or similar). Assuming the airport was available free of charge and is copyright free, I could place the models in an MSFS āthird partyā airport using the full SDK. Of course, if he can be contacted, perhaps he would like to make an MSFS version himself. I would always credit him. Otherwise, Iāll try to find suitable MSFS default buildings/objects.
In the meantime, I will submit a World Hub change to remove Ramps 1 and 2. It should be available with the next Airac update (Sept 5).
QUESTION: Can Ramp 2 be replaced with a vehicle parking spot (or somewhere within that paved area? Also, it appears from your photos that there is a Fuel area. Is that correct and, if so, where is it located? Perhaps an MSFS fuel parking spot would suffice for the time being?
